Can anyone help me, I just had a deal to sell my car and everything was fine until the purchaser ran a CARFAX report and the report stated that the car was titled in another state and the mileage was incorrect leading the buyer to think something was wrong.
I haved owned the car for the last 6 years and bought it new so I know the info is wrong. This bull@$! cost me the deal to the tune of about $7000.00 "difference between dealer and private party". Does anyone have any experience in this area, or can tell me who to go to. CARFAX has no phone contact so I don't know if I should go to an attorney or what?
Thanks in Advance. |

| Can we assume that you've seen the report and the correct VIN number was entered ? |

| Might be worth it to run a CARFAX yourself to see what it comes up with. That way you can be proactive with the info. when the next buyer comes along. |

I did run the report myself and it is as the buyer said, according to carfax my car was registered in another state with different mileage, when I have owned the car since new and been serviced by a local dealer since that time. It's outragous the info on carfax is reporting, it's very wrong. Monday I am going to consult with my attorney I don't know what else to do. Buyers for this car will all run this report and they should, but if the info is wrong I wil lose and also will they.
The irony to this situtation is that the car is a 98' and it has about 27k miles but in 2001 it was suposedly registered in another state with 42k on it, HOW THE HELL!@!
Thanks guys. |

How about calling carFAX and asking them WFT is this all about?
Can they provide the fake registered owner's name and address? You can report that to the cops.
Then take an IR from the cops and present that to CarFAX to wipe it off the title?
Not sure if this will work, but just my 2 cents. |

Do you have all documentation of oil changes and maintenance since new? If Carfax ultimately causes you to lose money due to their mistake I would be calling a lawyer.....BBB.....TV stations...etc. Unfortunately, everybody....including dealers.....put so much weight on the accuracy of these reports compiled by a private "FOR PROFIT" company.
Here is a tiny excerpt form the Carfax site....
"3. Disclaimer of Warranty; Limitation of Liability.
YOU EXPRESSLY AGREE THAT USE OF THE SITE IS AT YOUR SOLE RISK. NEITHER CARFAX, ITS AFFILIATES, NOR ANY OF THEIR RESPECTIVE EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, THIRD PARTY CONTENT PROVIDERS, OR LICENSORS WARRANT THAT THE SITE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR FREE; NOR DO THEY MAKE ANY WARRANTY AS TO THE RESULTS THAT MAY BE OBTAINED FROM USE OF THE SITE, OR AS TO THE ACCURACY OR RELIABILITY OF ANY INFORMATION, SERVICE, OR MATERIALS PROVIDED THROUGH THE SITE."
The entire "Terms and Conditions" can be found

Good luck and I hope things work out for you!! Please keep us informed...

Can you short-circuit that, and just have the cops run the vin search to see if it shows up previous ownership in another state. etc.?
If it shows you as the only owner, then ask them for a copy of the report ... |

If the vehicle was purchased new, then you have the original bill of sale from the dealer which has the VIN number as well as an indication that you paid the original registration fees through the dealer.
Your local department of vehicles should also be able to provide a registration/title history.
With these two, a prospective buyer should be reasonably satisfied.
You should then send copies of these to CarFax and ask them to correct, what will be conclusively demonstrated above, as a data entry error. |

Yeah. What he said. Got to be a clerical error. :4: |

Probably a clerical error, but keep your mind open to the possibility of identify theft. Your VIN might have been hijacked and put on "rebuildable wreck" or stolen car. |

Here's what you'll hear from CarFAX -
In order for CARFAX to amend a title record that appears on our report, we require the following documentation:
- a copy of the incorrect AND corrected titles, OR
- a letter on letterhead from the state DMV that issued the title explaining the nature of the
error, OR
- a complete title history report from the issuing state department of motor vehicles
Please click on the following link to access our Data Review Request form: http://216.197.127.81/cfxdemo/consumer/CRI-0402.pdf
