DEFINITIVE THREAD for '05 pricing - Click HERE for Original Thread

closetobuying05
Hi...first-time post for me; 85% ready to buy my first-ever MDX, and because of bluetooth and onstar, will opt to go with the '05 versus ‘04 and older. In general, I am a big fan of last-yrs model at end of year bargain sales, but really want this bluetooth and onstar technology.

BACKGROUND: I have compared on paper the RX330 (dealkiller = no 3rd seat), and in real person the VW Tourag (dealkillers = too sluggish; reviews across the board were spotty), Murano (dealkiller = poor reviews and my personal test drive was nothing special), the Porshe Cayenne (high price, no 3rd seat deal killers), Honda Pilot (lack of drop-down side-curtain airbags, even for ;05 is the dealkiller) and I pass the BMW dealership daily (price is dealkiller), and I genunely feel that Acura has “it right”. This thread has been immensely helpful in coming to this conclusion.

I have seen various threads discussing pricing...would be *most grateful* if I could get some baselines from recent '05 buying experiences, and thought it would be logical to try to get one consolidated thread on the subject.

Please describe your purchase ideally leaving out all accessories, and just describing the price you paid relative to these five main models referring to acura’s web site:
A: MDX A (BASE), MDX B (BASE /TOURING), MDX C (BASE/TOURING/ENTERTAINMENT), MDX D (BASE/TOURING/NAV), MDC E (BASE/TOURING/NAV/ENTERTAINMENT); again, if not to much trouble, please “back out” any accessories and/or any trade-in credit; trying to get a pure “apples to apples” comparison
B) Locale as specific as you want to be, eg SE US, Alabama, or Birmingham, or even the dealership and rep if you care to share. The more specific, the more value we all can gain from this thread.
C) Accessories picked, and price, and comment if from a) dealer, or b) from 3rd party, or c) OEM/web site

Other “nice to know” info:
A) if you used an online car-buying service though kbb.com, etc ??
A1) if so, were negotiations fierce, or relatively easy ?
B) if you negotiated in person, were negotiations fierce or relatively easy ?
C) if your dealer is/was internet/search engine savvy.Purpose of this question: To me if they are savvy, this implies they should be aware of the translucency of pricing these days and invaluable power of the internet for sharing experiences and information, ie turning the UNinformed into the INFORMED, sophisticated, and empowered prospective buyer. If not savvy, the dealer will likely pass on an easy sale and it goes to the internet-savvy dealership who quotes the “real price” up front and we all save time and energy.

Look forward to seeing this thread grow. Will sure be a big help to me as I make a purchase in the next 2 weeks. My sense as of now is that MSRP less $1000 is easy....MSRP less $2500 might be the eventual “best deal”, and my reading of various threads has mentioned the typical spread for the MDX is about $4000 between INVOICE and MSRP. TO get to INVOICE would be nice, but I don’t think it will happen for the ‘05, until 2005. I am not into taking every thin dime of profit out of a deal, and respect a fair profit for a dealer, but I am very uncomfortable with the typical car buying experience, even as professional as most Acura reps are, and prefer to let the intenet benefit me by sharing info.

First welcome to the group; but if/when you buy you'll have to change your name.

Second, it sure reads as if you REQUIRE 3rd row seating. If so I highly recommend the MDX over your other options. Since the '05 just came out it may take a while to compile the info you seek. Have some patience and good luck.

Third, why was the Murano considered and not the FX35? I love my FX35, but of course it does not offer 3rd row seating (thats what the MDX is for). For a great FX forum check out: www.infinitifx.org
closetobuying05
msu79gt82, hope I have to change my ID in a few weeks. As to query about the FX, I am in a 2nd tier market with no Infinity, Lexus, or Acura dealer within 125 miles in all directions. I have learned most HONDA dealers *will* service in-warranty Acuras (though I likely have to pre-pay the repair and then file for reimbursement from Acura), whereas I am almost positive Toyota dealers cannot service Lexus in-warranty under any conditions (again, not absolutely positive). So Toyota shoots themselves in the foot there. Not sure of Nissan's policy re: Infinity in-warranty and service issues, but the lack of 3rd row seating was the dealkiller there. I will admit I am very impressed w/ Nissan's side-curtain focus on their Nissan line, thus assume it carries over to Infinity. Also - and don't take it wrong - I could not warm up to the styling of the FX/Murano I have to admit.

I think Nissan ruined their cars when they went to that terrible orange dash color inside. Otherwise, the Murano I drove was OK. Not used to that CVT and I feel (Compared to my 2000 Maxima) that it was very "plasticy" inside. I'm sure the Infinity is better, but I can't speak to that.

Sorry, off topic.

My thoughts exactly! Big-big-big turnoff... had 2 Maximas before and loved the dash layout and softblue lighting. Not too impressed with new layouts either.

So far, I have not yet committed but the best deal I am being offered:

A: MDX D (Base/Touring/NAV) offered to us for $40,845 (MSRP = $42,845, less $2000).
B: NE Texas (Dallas/Shreveport/Houston triangle)
C: no accessories priced up yet; still working the deal to buy the MDX itself and accessories will follow.

If the spread is truly $4000 between invoice and MSRP, and you agree w/ my opinion that for an '05 it will be tough to get one of these at INVOICE, maybe splitting the bracket down the middle is about right ? Would appreciate some feedback here. TIA.

P.S. I will be glad to ID the actual dealership once I get my deal locked in. Don't want to bias my results until then.
High Technology
A) MDX D (BASE/TOURING/NAV) - $2,500 under MSRP

B) Locale - Northern NJ

C) No accessories included, although I asked the salesperson to "help" me with an extra key and all-season mats. I won't be too upset if those don't get thrown in...

I liked the sales guy: my wife and I originally went in back in early August to see how our child safety seats fit, and told him we would likely want to wait for 2005. He gave us no pressure at all, sales manager simply asked if we would "consider an '04 today at more substantial savings", to which we declined. We shook hands and he told us to come back in September and he would give us "a good deal".

When I went back the Saturday after the official '05 MDX announcement, sales manager offered me a good deal out of the box ($2,000 off), but I insisted on $2,500. Two minutes later we shook hands, and wrote out the paperwork. I was hoping for at least $2k off, and if he said no to $2,500, I probably would have taken it, so I didn't push for anything beyond $2,500 other than asking the sales person for the extra key & mats.

$500 Deposit left at the time and as of 3 weeks ago the car was set for build 10/19-10/23. It is due in the first week of November or thereabouts (next week -- I'll be checking in with them tomorrow, since I've been out of town for last 2 weeks).

Two weeks ago I purchased a 2005 Steel Blue MDX. I live in San Diego and my local dealer (Hoehn) would not deal on the 2005 model. They had many 2004's and were trying to move them.

I went on the Acura website and used the quote feature selecting around 10 dealers in Southern California stating that I wanted a 2005 Steel blue, Quartz, Touring, Nav, RES.

That same day I received about 5 replies most stating that they did not have any 2005's, or trying to sell me a 2004. One dealer in Los Angeles e-mailed saying that they had the car I wanted (just received it) and quoted MSRP less $3150.

I called my local dealers asking them if they wanted to match the offer. None did, so we drove up to LA that day and picked up thge car. Perfect, easy transaction.

I suggest that you never call up any dealer and ask for a "sales person" or just show up for that matter. Use the Acura website or call and ask for the fleet department. You will save big.

Hope this helps. Good Luck.

I have one reserved for $3143 off MSRP. Went through a broker in Southern Cal. I also got accessories (moonroof visor, spoiler, body molding, wheel locks, cargo cover) at a total discount of $162 off list and no add'l charge for installation. It's supposed to be ready for pick up within the next week.

I purchased an 05 w/NAV last week. Price (subtracting out the side steps at $750 and the cargo cover at $150) was $39,100 without tax/license.

I bought it at Cush Acura of Escondido (San Diego area). I don't know if that will be much help for those of you outside of CA but thought I would put in my two cents anyway.

I just purchased a base MDX for $33000 and so far I am very happy with the vehicle. Last December I purchased a loaded VW Touareg. This truck is incredible, it does everything wonderfully at a price of $53K the ride, the air suspension, the style, I just couldn't get enough of, and a 4 wheel drive system that is raved by all. The commercials just got to me.

We had a travel trailer, and it had no problem towing at all. In June we went out west to do some four wheeling in Moab. Her I am in a $53K SUV out in NOWHERE with NO Cell reception, and the truck just stop. I couldn't start it an all these errors came up on the screen. Luckily I did have with me a portable battery jump starter, and for the last 10 days of my trip had to jump start it every time.

The problems just got worse. On our way back to Florida where we live, we traded in the Travel trailer and bought a 36 ft motorhome. Unfortunately the Touareg can not be towed 4 wheels down. When I return the vehicle to the dealer, time after time, they just couldnt get it right. VW did purchase it back with NO PROBLEMS. I do have to see they were extremely professional about it.
I now needed another vehicle.

I chose the MDX because it can be towed 4 wheels down behind a motorhome, it is luxurious, has decent gas mileage (13-14 on the Treb), has plenty of room, and most of all A GREAT RELIABILITY RECORD.

True the MDX doesn't have all the bells and whistles that the Treg had, but for 20K less, its a steal.

I enjoy reading your articles on this forum. I was a member of the Treg forum also, and couldn't believe all the *****ing and moaning that was going on about the same problems over and over again.

I am glad that VW did right by me, and I'm glad I bought the MDX

A deal at $2500 off MSRP ($42,845) for an '05 MDX/TOUR/NAVI seems repeatable and very doable at several dealerships I've been working with. Yes, there is a trade, so maybe they're playing around w/ the money on the trade-in unit, but my sense is they could care less bout a trade-in or not and that $2500 off MSRP is a doable deal without much effort. To get to $3000 off MSRP might be the real fight if you're into negotiating tactics, and a deeper discount than $3000 off MSRP for this early in the '05 season may be a dealkiller, IMO.

To try to keep a consistent format:
So far, I have not yet committed but the best deal I am being offered:

A: MDX D (Base/Touring/NAV) offered to us for $40,345 (MSRP = $42,845, less $2500).
B: NE Texas (Dallas/Shreveport/Houston triangle)
C: couple of accessories and prices being offered; comments invited on all items please...
c1) tow hitch/coolers for $1095; seems extremely excessive and I will decline the Acura install and go 3rd party sans coolers; towing plans are intermittantly at best
c2) dust deflector for $519
c3a) black or chrome tubular sidesteps for $765 (sure seems excessive to me)
OR
c4b) traditional running boards for $689
c5) locking lugs, cargo cover, rubber mats $399 (protection pkg) <--- we know this is a rip and can be obtained online for significantly less from eBay or 3rd party
Lacostacal
I received MSRP less $3150 without having to negoiate for a 05 Tour/Nav/Res.

The prices you have been quoted for the accessories are very high, by at least 30% Many Acura dealers sell on ebay or direct. Call Curtis at Butler Acura in OR at 800-627-7720. He seems to have the lowest prices on accessories of any dealer I found and is willing to deal. He also sells on ebay. Do a search in ebay on stores for "butler auto group" and you will find their store.

Good luck.

LA,
You haven't heard about Hondacuraworld.com, have you? Tim Polniak is a staunch supporter of the correspondents on this board, and gives great service with just about the best prices. He got to be the largest Acura accesories dealer, maybe because of us.
You're new- we'll forgive you. This time. :p

lacostacal - so far, the one consistent exception to pricing research I've seen across multiple threads is that SOCAL, specifically San Diego Acura prices...are more competitive than elsewhere. Your price at $3100+ below MSRP is not repeatable across most of the US IMO. My goals here are to a) feel comfortable I've got a fair price, probably not the bottom dollar if I really played the game, but fair and reasonable, and b) to give others thinking about a new '05 a starting point at a fair deal - and so far I am guessing its $2000-$2500 off MSRP.

shootish and zafer, actually I have seen references to Tim and his equipment, and was planning to review that further once I got the auto purchase itself out of the way. So thanks for the reminder and I'll be sure to give him consideration.

I agree with that assessment. I'll also say that it's more important to watch your wallet all the way out the door, than it is to get the last $500 off the deal.

I had a mistake on taxes- 8.625% in seller's county versus 8.25 percent charged by my home county. Fixed, of course.

Dealer quote on financing- "Got great rate- I haven't seen it in six months- only 4.9% instead of 5.25 at Honda."
Me- "I've already been quoted 4.25% at Honda- Push back"
Dealer: "Honda just called back and agreed to match 4.25!"

Dealer: "and would you like those neat side steps? Only $850!"
Me: "No thanks- I think I'll hold off on those."

ANd the best one: "And- we've installed the $135 set of wheel locks free of charge, just to show you how we appreciate your order!"
Me: "Hey! Thanks a lot! That's so generous of you!" (aside- to throw in $35 of locks)

I've learned not to let myself get angry at these maneuvers, and just lock my wallet- it makes the process so much more pleasant.

I purchased my 05 tour w/nav at 39,500 including Tow pkg and rear spoiler for $40,500 plus T&T. Cargo mat and cover will fit off my 02(I hope).

What are people paying for 2005 MDX's? I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a 2005 touring with entertainment package.

What did you pay for your model- without tax since that varies state to state?

What did you pay for running boards, spoiler installed?

What did you pay for an extended warranty?

Thank you very much in advance.

MSRP + destination minus $2-3 thou seems the ballpark. $2,500 discount is probably the mode. You might have to get bids from two or more dealers and be willing to travel.

Check hondacuraworld.com for the accessory prices, then add about 1.5 hours of shop time for each install. (probably $65-85/hour). The dealer will always overcharge for accessories- I found it was cheaper to contact the service department directly after the sale. You can buy them from Tim and install them yourself pretty easily.

7 year/100k / $50 deductible warranty runs about $1,650 or so, and can be purchased like a commodity from any dealer during the next year or two.

Does anyone out there know the dealer net on an 05 MDX touring with Nav? I don't mean the invoice. My dad is in the auto. business and I'm looking to get one of these. I'd ask him but he always forgets to check on stuff like this when I ask him. I figured there might be one or two people on here that work with a dealer or something of that nature.

Invoice is $38,650 including destintion charge, then subtract dealer holdback of $1,268- Consumer Reports has this information.

Hey All,
I recently purchased an 05 MDX while home on leave from the war. Bottom line, I was able to get $3000 off MSRP on the "MDX E" (Touring/Nav/Entertainment). Plus the dealership installed the running boards and side moldings at "cost" (No labor).

The car is for my wife who is downsizing from a Durango. I was originally going to get an Volvo XC90 for her through the Military Sales Program, but we discovered the MDX doing our due diligance SUV search and fell in love.

I had limited time to work the deal and I initially went through an online buying service. It seemed like a bait and switch in progress with the pricing they gave me, and the dealership they were using couldn't deliver the color MDX I wanted before I had to return. So I called several dealerships in New England and asked for the Internet Sales Rep. I told them my situation and the price break I was getting with the buying service. After a few calls, I was able to find a dealership with the color Ext/Int (Black/Ebony) we wanted and we bought it the next day. The dealership was great. I got just what the sales manager and I had agreed to on the phone.

My wife loves the Nav system, the kids are quiet watching DVDs, and I'm back in Kuwait.

05 MDX Touring w/NAV - Aspen White

Paying about $600 over invoice in Austin, TX. Don't think this deal is repeatable as I had extenuating circumstances, but the folks at McDavid Acura of Austin are great to work with and very patient.

I'd recommend the dealer!

Took her for a test drive yesterday (hadn't gone though prep yet or inspection) and can't wait to actually take delivery. This is one VERY sweet vehicle. Almost bought one last year, but am glad I waited as the Bluetooth and faster NAV are definitely worth the wait.

Good luck everyone!

I just purchased an '05 MDX with Touring/NAV/RES for $1K over invoice. I pick it up in a couple of days.

I recommend checking out www.carbuyingtips.com. They have excellent info for buying a car and not overpaying. I'm looking to join the market next year after my Mustang is paid off.

picked up my '05 touring+navi mdx, loaded with an extra 3K in options (even the wood trimmings) , for $3950 off msrp. took 3 hrs and 5 round trips for the sales guy to the mgr... but worth the wait.

I figure I paid something like 1K over invoice for the car and 15-20% discount on the extra accessories (installed, of course)...

the ride is a bit stiff compared to the lexus but comparable to a mercedes benz. love the car.

Which dealership did you buy from?

Yesterday I just picked up my desert rock mdx touring - no res or nav. I used an online auto broker to get me the deal. The broker cost me $350. I paid invoice for the mdx + 530 for installed black sidesteps + 105 for weather mats + 108 for cargo tray. This beat my best local deal by quite a bit, but I did have to drive 3.5 hours with a nearly three year old in tow to get it done. The dealership was excellent - they gave my daughter a coloring book when we first got there and the salesman had children, so he was very understanding when I had to direct my attention away from him. The sales manager was also excellent and he gave my daughter a matchbox car with bling bling wheels to play with on the ride home. The sales manager also over heard me tell the salesman that we were going to eat and then go home and presented me with $15 in gift certificates to Ruby Tuesdays just a minute down the road. Also, as I pulled in to the restaurant, I saw the salesman waving at me - he was bringing me my garage door opener that I had left in my landcruiser trade. I live in Indiana, the dealer was in Ohio, and the auto broker , I believe, is based in New Jersey, but obviously have midwest contacts.

Please pm me for the name of the auto broker that I used. I must state that this was an end of the month deal, and I believe it was her first deal with this dealer and they were obviously trying to get repeat business. She was able to get me very high wholesale price for my landcruiser - 2000 with 57K miles in excellent shape.
Asmo
Did the broker tack on a big "destination charge" ? that's a game they play sometimes - i assume you didnt have to deal with that since u went to pick it up yourself.

seems to me that you can get a smokin deal for MDX without Navi. the navi models sell pretty quick... the vast majority of the dozens of MDX at the dealerships are without navi.

if you don't need navi, I suggest you strike a hard bargain.
Mjfloyd1
Asmo,

I assume you mean document fee. They charged $100 - this included overnighting me the paperwork and me overnighting it back to them so that it would be signed by month end.

The only fee I paid the broker was the $350.

Ranger1:

Go over to the "Dollar & Sense" forum and you'll see that people are paying as little as $600 over invoice- a few people iin CA & TX. I got a vehicle for $1000 over iinvoice in NJ. $1500-$2000 over invoice seems to be had in just about any part of the country.

Edmunds and Carsdirect: "What people are paying" is way off.

appreciate if you could inform me the dealer you worked out on the 05. I'm into buying one for my "wife and kids". Its about time that I get the MDX, ive been looking into getting this since 2 years ago but my budget has never allowed me. thanks, you can PM me the salesrep too if you dont mind.

I have to disagree about the earlier statement made about San Diego pricing being better than other areas. I live in San Diego and found my best pricing in the LA area.

I tried CarsDirect, who referred me to Hoehn Acura in Carlsbad at $1,500 over invoice. Costco's program sent me to Cush Acura of Escondido with a price of $2,000 over invoice. I called Cush Acura in Kearny Mesa and was quoted $3,175 over invoice. I thought I was set when I was referred by a friend to Norm Reeves Acura in Temecula and was quoted $725 over invoice.

But then I called dealers in the LA area. Rather than stating a price, the Internet Manager at Keyes, asked what I wanted to pay. I was caught off-guard but offered $500 over invoice. He promptly agreed and I was left wondering if I could have done better. Never satisfied I tried Tustin Acura who agreed to match Keyes' pricing. (Cerritos Acura quoted $1,500 over invoice.)

Long story short, I couldn't get the San Diego dealers to match Keyes' price and since Keyes' had the specific unit in stock they got the sale. So on 12/4/04 I rode the train to Van Nuys and picked up my 2005 MDX Touring in Nighthawk Black Pearl with Saddle interior.

Congrats on your deal. Two questions:

There's a train from San Diego to Los Angeles? Does anyone know about it? Other than the trollys in San Francisco I thought there wasn't any public transportation on the left coast.

:D

I myself was surprised when the dealer suggested riding Amtrak. But the Van Nuys station is just 2 miles from the dealership so a salesman picked me up and brought me back. Sure beat having my wife drive +two hours each way from/to San Diego. First time I'd been on the train since I was a kid. It was kind of fun actually.

UncleMilt:

You left coasters have to get your public transportaion act together. More people take AMTRAK from Boston, New York, New Jersey or Philadelphia, to Washington, D.C. than take a plane. The train ride is fabulous. For those of us who commute to Manhattan a train is much more enjoyable than having to drive through on the the tunnels or over a bridge during rush hour.

That said, driving around an MDX and playing with the navigation system is a blast.

Thanks all of you guys. Finally I got my X, Black Color with Navigation and already put 36 miles on it.

Price : 38900 with fees
Tax 8.25%
Interest Rate : 2.9

The buying experience was very pleasant. I did get te deal in Los Angeles area. Yet to have a feel of it. But somehow I am hearing some brake noise etc. Is it normal?

Thanks a lot you guys especially hkgmdx. You guys and this forum is definitely very very informative.
