Screeching at 40-45+ mph - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi all,

'01 MDX, ~69,000 miles, and i've loved driving every one.

so i have a strange squeeling noise that is getting louder by the day. sounds like it's coming from the wheels. sound starts around 40-45 mph and continues at any speed above. goes away when you go slower than this.

i am due for new tires. still on the original michelen's (love that tire!). i have not yet changed the brake pads. i had them checked at 64,000 and i still had 55% on the rears, 50% on the front (a lot of hwy miles).

anyone else had this problem?

my brakes never squealed, and applying the brakes does not affect the sound (unless you go below 40 mpj)

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks !

Bearings ?? Were you driving in standing water ??
RC98
hmm, no -- i dont do much driving in standing water...i mean not more than normal driving through rain puddles type of stuff.

ill have to get it checked out. just wanted to know if anyone has heard of or experienced this with their MDX.

i would think that bearings should not go out at 69,000. thoughts?
eurohazard
It would be unusual for the bearings to go out at that low of mileage.

what are the symptoms for bad CV joints? aside from the brakes, there's not much else that wears out @ the wheels...
nightguy
Possible the pad may have slipped out and the clip is dragging on the rotor. I think the squeal is there at lower speeds but maybe you can't hear it. Total shot in the dark...wish I could hear it.

thanks for the responses...ill be taking to acura for diagnosis

it mentions in the manual that the brake pad wear indicators produce a "screeching" noise consistently if worn and not replaced. could this be the culprit?

im still on the original pads, however when checked last (about 3 months ago), they were at around 50%. i cant imagine they wouldve worn to the indicators since then.

ill update the forum once i find out.

if anyone knows what the symptomologies of a bad CV are pls let us know.

thanks! RC

A CV joint will usually click when you make a hard turn. I doubt that's it based on your symptoms. You could check the boots for any tears. Usually they start breaking down when the boot tears and water and dirt make their way in.

I don't think the pads are worn, that's why I suggested maybe one slipped. Did they take the wheel and brake assembly off when they measured ?

not sure how far they got with disassembly...he just brought the pads in to me with his wear gauge and showed me that i didn't need new pads yet.

i asked if he saw any unusual wear on the rotors or the pads. he said nothing out of the ordinary.

ill bring her in to get checked out. i originally thought that the noise was just wind noise. however, it has become progressively worse over the past few weeks.

i know it is definitely a "noise" and not the wind. when im in the far lane on the freeway (next to the cement dividers), going through a tunnel, or through densely forested areas, it is clear that the screeching is abnormal.

ill keep you posted :)

I'm gonna have to go with the brake pad wear indicator -- maybe one pad is worn worse than the others and is hollering, or the wear indicator (a shaped steel spring) is out of place.

Maybe a friend could stand beside the road as you go by, and listen to determine if it's front or rear, left or right.
nightguy
"Her". I love it ! Oh...I concur with what frostyra said. I meant the spring not the whole pad.
