3 flat tires in 16 months/15K miles? - Click HERE for Original Thread

My wife has gotten 3 flats on our 16 month old MDX with 15,000 miles since we purchased it. We were able to get them all plugged but still... Are the Michelin's soft or is she just having bad luck? One was a nail, one was a screw and yesterday looked to be a small piece of metal.

Should I tell her to stop aiming for the sharp objects in the street? (I'm sure that would go over well :22: )

I was just wondering if these flats were all in the same tire. I've had about 3 flats (different cars) in the past 3 years and all were in the right rear tire. My theory is that it's junk on the right side of the road, the front tire flips it up and the rear tire catches it.

I had a nail twice in my right rear tire. The first time it was stuck in the groove and the second time I had to plug it.

If you happen to live in a newly constructed area (or some subdivisions still under construction), you may get more of those than you like. We had lots of those nails last year and the 2 years before. Much better now that the entire area is almost finished. There are still some houses under construction but we don't have to pass by on those streets (some neighbors there must be having this problem now...)

The more aggressive the tread pattern the more likely that road debris will be "picked up" by the tire. A "road tire" that is designed for low rolling resistance and minimal traction will roll over an object and not disturb it. The more aggressive "cross terrain" type tires like the Michelin on the MDX are higher traction tires that will distrub road debris that a road tire will just roll over.

It's well known in the tire industry that the higer the price of the tire the more likely they will pick up nails, etc. This is not just a old wives tail, but reality since higher priced tires usually have better traction. This works up to the point of self-sealing tires which are very expensive.

Jim,

Just a case of really bad luck I'm afraid....

The Cross Terrains are a really hard/stiff compound which makes them ride terrible but should allow them hold up against punctures as well as any other tire out there.

My preference is the Goodyear Fortera. I have had these tires on three different SUVs now (on 2 of them the Fortera replaced the Cross Terrains) and I am much happier with the Forteras....

Much better overall handling in all conditions including snow, better braking, much better ride and I think the Fortera looks more like a SUV tire

Good luck!
