Does anyone know how the storage volume behind the third row seat in the X compares to that in the GX470?
Here's the deal. My wife and I are taking our 3 kids & dog and our friends 2 kids away for the weekend. My friend says we should use his car (the Lexus) because it has more luggage space when all the seats are in use. I've never looked that closely at the GX470 and couldn't find any good data on the web. Anyone have any opinions on this (as if this forum ever lacks opinions!)?

He's probably right on the basis of height. My parents have a GX and it's significantly taller than the MDX. If you are willing to pack to the roof, then you certainly could get more into the GX. My dad did agree that the third row seats in the MDX are more comfortable, since the 3rd row in the GX has no dedicated footwell.
With that many people you aren't going to be able to fit much luggage at all in either vehicle. Do you have a roof box? |

From what I recall of the GX, I don't believe there is really any usable interior luggage space with the third seat in use. The MDX really doesn't have much either, but there is room for a few small bags in the MDX. Roof space may be a different story.
Then again, if your friend is volunteering use of his car for the kids to romp in for the trip, I'd probably take him up on it. |

KenF - don't have a cargo box, but this raises another good point. The rack on the GX looks (from picutres) like it's more useful to tie down luggage, since it has side rails and rubber strips on the roof.
Ceenit - all other things being equal, I completely agree.
I know that when we take weekend trips in the X with the 5 of us, dog and luggage, I usually manage to stuff everything behind the 3rd row (although there are times, much as I hate to admit it, that I long for an Oddysey or Sienna). But with 2 more sets of luggage, I have my doubts... |

?
This is true. We looked at the GX also and seriously if anybody sits in the third row your knees are up into your chests. |

Not a good move. In the event of a sudden stop or a major rear-end collision, unsecured items in the rear of the compartment will be thrown forward. With 5 kids and a dog in the car I would keep everything below the headrests.
BTW, I know you aren't suggesting they pack to the roof but I've seen it done and besides the danger I just mentioned it almost kills rear visibility.
No rear-visibility + 5 kids + 1 dog = MAJOR DISTRACTIONS FOR THE DRIVER. |

| Why not rent a Mini Van.....? Let's all be realistic, if you're not below the age of 6 years, sitting in the 3rd row is tough.... |

Very good advice. I've been contemplation a very similiar situation in the past few weeks. I am trying to get 5 adults and 2 babies in the MDX for my up coming trip and there is no easy way to do it. I've thought very hard about getting a roof rack and I was very close to getting one but the bottom line was that for about $250, I could rent a minivan for a week with unlimited miles.
Granted the ride will sucks for my passenger as there is no RES system or the fact that I have to use my little handeld GPS but the bottom line is that everyone will be much more comfortable. Another bonus is that I am not going to add 1200 miles to my MDX.
And to be quite honest, I don't think my 2 year old would be comfortable in the 3rd row with a booster seat. I tried the Britax Wizard in the 3rd row and it will not fit. |

Yep take it from me, recently we had twins expaing our family to 5! And 4 year olds booster seat is a big pain to fit in the 3rd row....so I did the next best stupid thing, I leased an Infiniti QX56....soon I'll post a MDX vs QX56 review.... |

My 5' 7" 16 year old loves it in the 3rd row on trips!! We travel with the 3rd seat split for cargo room. The 5 of us fit just fine; and as I said the 16 year old prefers the rear. :1: |
