We have owned our 04 base since June...has 7000 miles on it, talked to the dealer about upgrading to the 2005 touring ( next step up)... our MDX is in excellent condition...but the dealer wanted $8000 difference! Seems our MDX has depreciated $5000 in 6 months! This is the last Acura I will own! Chuck

Keep in mind a couple of things: 1) This is the beginning of the model year, when dealers do little (if any) price dickering. 2) Early depreciation is the worst, and if you sold it on the open market, you could do quite a bit better.

So, other than some of the Touring features, why do you want to trade so quickly?

I agree with frostyra, that unless money is not an issue,
trading in your <1 yr old car is always not money-wise.

Particularly that there's little difference between 04 and 05 models.

$5000 in 6 months/7000miles is not all that bad. A relative of mine
traded in his 18 months old, 20000 miles ML320, for
$20000 off purchase price of $56000 (Canadian Dollars).:mad:

How much was the dealer prepared to offer you for your trade in and how much was he trying to sell the new MDX to you. Also, were you going with a touring model with either nav. or res, or were you sticking with the base.

not to be too harsh, but wake up and smell the coffee. New vehicles loose a substantial amount of value the minute you drive them off the lot.

That is why many of us wait to pick up nice , clean, low mileage luxury vehicles like an MDX after someone else has eaten the initial depreciation.

Anyone swapping a year old vehicle is going to take a big hit.

Check the Edmunds wholesale for your X and the new sticker. I would guess they are around what the dealer is offering.

Yeah, If I were you I would buy a Yukon or some other type of GM product. Better yet, buy a lincoln!! The resale is much better on those!! Wake up!! You buy new and then go to trade, the dealer plans on making 2k or 3k on your trade. The street value on your car is much higher than what the dealer offered you and Acura holds GREAT resale. I have owned an old Acura for 5 years now and the car has not depreciated a penny!! My dealer just offered me $8500 for an absolutely PERFECT 96 BMW M3 with good miles.
It would be silly to say I will never buy a BMW again! If I could buy 96 M3's for that I would be living right.....and If I were dumb enough to trade for that ...then I would be a uninformed consumer. I sold the car for 14,500 ( a little more than loan value) a day later. Man, think of it....the dealer would have pocketed 7k on an 8k investment and he would not even have had to detail the car.....if he waited a couple of weeks he probably could have sold it for 16,500....that is the name of the game......DON'T play the game...sell it yourself!
I just bought a 3 mth old 04 with nav and res with 9k miles and paid 37700........that should make you feel better!

I have to agree w/ the tone of the responses...$5000 for 6MO is a pittance percentage of value-wise.

Given they will need to make, say, $2000 on a $35K investment...they are, in effect, giving you only $3000 less than what you paid....and if I understand your post correctly, you are not only going 1 year newer...but appear to "stepping up" from the base model to the TOURING model. Doesn't that account for another $1500-$2000 ?

Seems to me you are getting a good to excellent offer, or at least compared to any domestic-manufactured car. Try getting within $5K for a Suburban or GMC/Ford/Chrysler to jump one year newer. If you had purchased your 2004 at the *beginning* of the model year (around late Oct, 2003), then you would arguably have used the car for almost a year...for $5K depreciation. I only hope for the same retained value w/ my '05 now on order.
