wet brake grinding sound - Click HERE for Original Thread

Whenever the brakes are wet and have been sitting for awhile, there is a dull grinding sound when they are first activated. Anyone else notice this?
I find this noise if it's sitting for a couple of days, as well. Regardless if the brakes are wet. When I return from being out of town, it takes a few minutes and use of the brakes to settle in. Anyone with an explanation?

I believe this is the surface rust that forms on the rotors if the are not run after they are sitting wet for a while. A couple of applications of the brake will clean up the rotor surface. I have had this situation on my last couple of cars.
I figured that it was something like that...but I have had a dozen cars over the years and never heard that before. Must be something about the rotor compound on the Acura.

My previous vehicle (300M) did the same thing. I thought it was because it was made from crappy American parts. I had never noticed this on my previous cars.
If you drive it right after it gets wet, before the water sits too long it won't happen. It must have to due with the highly polished rotor surface and the way the water reacts to it. But sometimes that noise will make you think the whole car is about to fall apart! Will not do any damage though.
It is caused by the temporary surface rust on the rotors and is probably more noticable b/c of the relatively large disk brake rotors on the MDX (a good thing). One of my other cars is a Lexus IS300 with large rotors and boy does that grumbling wake you up on a morning after it has been setting idle for a few days.
