The 05's get a free year of OnStar service, and thirty free minutes of phone calls. So I activated this evening. Took about 5 minutes to sign up, but the phone wouldn't activate. Referred to tech department, for another 15 minutes. Activation was successful, and OnStar gave me 60 more minutes for the inconvenience.
The "Personal Calling" works like a prepaid cell phone- you get 30 minutes to start, and can buy more as you wish. They had a 'special'- 100 minutes for $20, so I bought some more.
Reception and sound quality were excellent. OnStar uses the Verizon network, which is pretty good where I am. When in use, the word ONSTAR appears on the radio display, and volume is controlled by the radio volume controls.
OnStar doesn't hook into the Navi system, but Bluetooth does.
So, I'll bluetooth my regular cell phone, and use the prepaid Onstar minutes when I forget my cell. |

Do the minutes expire?
Do you need to continue with basic after the year to use the ONstar dialing capabilities? |

The first thirty from Acura expire two months after purchase. The 100 minutes I bought are good for a year, as are the 60 minutes they threw in.
As far as I can tell, you do have to continue with Onstar to buy prepaid Personal Calling minutes. Onstar (the level we get with an 05) is $200 per year. With specials, you get 15 months for that 200.
I believe you also have to be an OnStar subscriber to add you OnStar phone to your Verizon plan for an add'l $10 month.
OnStar duplicates a lot of the service you get with Roadside Assistance, but it adds emergency door unlock by phone service, emergency notification of police when airbags blow, and GPS vehicle tracking if your car is stolen, as well as the built in prepaid cell phone. |
