Hi All -
01 SS MDX, 70k miles as of today
the "autodim" feature of my rearview mirror no longer seems to work. headlights beam into my eyes with the same intensity whether i have the auto on or not.
Anyone else have this problem? Is there a solution besides replacement?
Tim: how much for a new rearview? |

i got a possible answer; found this thread from acura-tl.com forums. hope this helps !!
If your rear view mirror no longer dims, read this thread.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If your rear view mirror no longer dims and you are out of warranty, contact Magna Donnelly (the manufacture of the mirror) and they will send you a free rear view mirror. Thank you for whoever it was that contacted them in the first place.
The contact info is Tom.Phee@magnadon.com or Jean.Glover@magnadon.com
The person that reply to me was Jean so maybe she can speed up your mirror shipping.
All I told them is that my rear view mirror no longer dims and that it was maunfacture by Magna Donnelly. She send me a reply email with the following questions about the mirror and I have answered the technical questions for you guys. If you have a 2003 TL with onstar....you are on your own for the technical questions below. Hell I don't even know if Magna Donnelly made those mirror with onstar.
1. Make and Model of your vehicle.
2. What features in addition to autodim does your current mirror have?
3. How many pins are in the back of your mirror?
3 pins
4. How many wires go into the plug for your current mirror?
3 wires
5. What color are the wires?
Black, Grey, White
6. What color is the plug?
Blue plug
7. Your name, address, zip code, email address, and phone number.
8. If possible please email digital pictures of the mirror mounting from a
side view and a picture of the complete mounting device if you have the
mirror off the
vehicle.
Once you recieved the mirror, don't take it to the dealer. They charge 30-60 dollars for this simple stuff. I been hearing that many people that try replacing the mirror think it's a pain in the ass but it is really simple. Don't try to pry it off because you can damage your windshield. Follow the DIY instruction I made below and you should be all set. PM me if you need addition info.

hey hammermdx,
couldn't find install instructions from the thread above...but read this; ill try to find better instructions w/ pictures....cause we all know a thread is worthless without pictures
To be honest it can be a frustrating experience removing it. Their obviously is a metal catch epoxied to the windsheild. However, wonderful acura does not use a set screw like everyone else to attach the mirror to it. The mirror slides up from underneath and over the clip, locking in place (basically push up hard from the bottom up towards the headliner); but this is the easy part.
To take mine off (not knowing what it looked like inside), I used a large flat bladed screw driver and thin piece of cardboard. I put the cardboard against the windsheild and pryed both sides of the existing mirror a little bit at a time (you'll chew the mirror a little but I assume you're replacing it). There is a metal clip inside the mirror base itself that grips the mirror to the glued on fastener plate. If you weaken it enough by prying, you will be able to pull the mirror right off eventually. Be careful NOT to mess up your glass! (some people have chipped it)
To get the electrical connection off, open the eyeglass holder and remove screws. Remove the lens covers there and remove the screws and remove assembly.
Now, as I said, the mirror slides in from the bottom up. It MAY be possible to just pry the top of the mirror and force it down over the little lip of the fasterner it connects to. Never tried it this way though:2: |

OK, So I have an '01 with around 118K miles on it. I've noticed recently that the liquid crystal stuff that dims the rearview mirror isn't working as well. Its as if it is running low on liqud and can't darken the area around the edges of the mirror, it just darkens the middle, in a big blob. It still works well enough that its not making me too crazy, but its annoying.
It took me a fair amount of searching to find this thread. Am I the only one having this problem? Maybe it is because there aren't too many X's with so many miles? Anyone know if the Magna Donnely link above still works? |

FYI, I received an email back from their Customer Service a few months back.
They no longer provide free replacements for the rearview, unless you are still under warranty, in which case you would need to claim through Acura (or through whoever you purchased your coverage). |

It's nice that they stand behind their product. I hope we won't start seeing this on the newer models as they age. |

I guess I live with it for now. It still has liquid in most of the mirror, it is the top 1/4" and bottom 1/4" that aren't covered. Since headlights are mostly in the middle of the mirror, this works OK. Add the fact that the rear window is tinted and I can live with it.
If it gets worse I'll have to deal with it. I'm certainly out of warranty.
If any of you total your X, would you please take the mirror off and let me know, I'll buy it from you. |

Here are a couple of names that you can now use:
Dani Andriacchi
Office of Technology
616-786-5115 (direct dial)
616-786-5185 (fax)
Keith Flannery
616 786 7495
Apparently they no longer need pictures but just your VIN. They
don't know if these mirrors have the new technology or the same design that has the possibility of leaking.
"We are shipping a replacement mirror to you today. The tracking information will be emailed to you directly from FedEx. It should arrive in a couple of days. After you replace your malfunctioning mirror please send it to Heath Flanery by using the replacement mirror's packaging and enclosed return label included with the replacement mirror and drop at any FedEx shipping location."

| just got an email from Magna Donnelly that a new rearview mirror is being sent via FedEx for my wifes 2000 3.2 TL. If anyone has a defective mirror they should contact Keith Flanery at 616-786-7495 and get a replacement. I called last week so it took almost a week for them to get back to me. A girl named Dani called me and had me fill out a document attached to an email with my VIN and other information. I sent the attachment back to her and within 2 hours I had my shippment notice from FedEX. My mirror will be to my house this Friday and I will need to send back my old mirror when I replace it. Dani said that the return label and packaging will also be included with the replacement mirror. |

OK. I just got the form from Magna Donnelly. It asks the same questions as in the post above that was copied from the TL site. are the answers the same for a 2000 TL as for a 2001 MDX?
Questions:
Features in addition to Autodim: (defaults to EC only)
Number of pins on the back of your mirror:
How many wires in the plug:
What color are the wires:
What color is the plug:
What color is the housing:
Can anyone answer these questions for me so I don't have to take the thing apart to find out. Plus I'm not home now anyway so I couldn't do it until tomorrow even if I wanted to. SuperTech, do you know this stuff? Mine is a 2001 MDX.
I'd post the claim form here, but it won't be of any use to you since it requires a unique Magna Donnelly assigned claim number on each one. If you give Dani Andriachi a call or email, she'll send you the form. Her details:

Yes, the mirror for the 2001 MDX is exactly the same one for the 2000 3.2 TL as I have had to replace both of my mirrors.
FYI - The Hona part number is 76400-SEP-A01ZA
Here are the answers that I provided:
Features in addition to Autodim: EC only
Number of pins on the back of your mirror: 3
How many wires in the plug: 3
What color are the wires: n/a
What color is the plug: n/a
What color is the housing: Black |

OK, I just got my replacement by FedEx today. Pretty good turnaround from Magna Donnelly. I ran out to install it before it got dark and then had to run back in to get my camera. I've got some so-so pics, but it will probably help. It took me all of about 15-20 minutes to do this and it would have been faster but I was being extra careful removing the old one.
Tools needed: One small-midsize flat screwdriver and one normal sized phillips screwdriver. That's it.
Step 1: Remove the 4 screws that hold the sunglass holder in place. Two of the screws are under the lens for the lamps. The lens comes off easily with a flat screwdriver in the two little notches nearer the windshield.
Step 2: Disconnect the wiring harness. Just press the tab up and slide it out.

Step 3: Remove the old mirror. As described below by daggra, this isn't all that easy. It should be, but it requires some force in the right direction. It slides down, along the line of the windshield, toward the dash. I'm not sure if its necessary, but I pried the small metal tab up with a flat screwdriver. First I wiggled it a bit side-to-side and up and down as I tried to get it off (not knowing the right way). It took more force than I thought it should, but maybe that's because I've had my windshield replaced a few times and who knows what they did in there. Here's a picture of the tab, taken when the mirror is off:

Step 4: Put the new mirror on. I'm not sure if I actually got it on as far as its supposed to go. I slid it up onto the mounting bracket on the windshield, but it never "clicked" into place. It doesn't come off very easily so I'm pretty sure it'll stay on. Here's a pic of the replacement unit before mounting. Note that there are two little covers for it. One you can see on here is the one that faces out the windshield. Its kind of triangular-ish in shape and should be on the mirror when you mount it. The other is more rectangular and faces into the car, just above the mirror. You'll put that back on after you finish the mounting.

Step 5: Wash your fingerprints off the new mirror after you put the whole thing back together. Obviously I still need to do step 5:

The package from Magna Donnelly came with a return Fedex label. I'll send the busted one back tomorrow.

Thanks everyone for this post! It has helped me a ton. I recently bought a 2003 MDX and the dimming rearview mirror did not work (not something you check for when testing during daylight). But thanks to everyone`s posts here, I was able to email Dani at Magna and within a day, literally, I got my new mirror shipped to me FedEx at no cost to me. Also thanks to Sinecure`s pictorial instructions, I was able to install the new mirror myself in less than 10 minutes. Now it works like a charm, making me very happy.
I love this forum. :) |

Also is the contact person (Dani Andriacchi) still current?

Received an email from Dani this morning:
As a pro bono goodwill gesture, I can assist you in getting a replacement mirror. Please review the attached form for accuracy and return to me for processing.
(I had emailed all of the information regarding the number of pins, color of wires, etc that I garnered from this thread, along with my mailing address)
I sent Dani an email stating everything was correct, and I received a FedEx shipping email today. I should have my new mirror on Thursday.
I am not brave enough to install it myself. Is the dealer the only option? How much would they charge?

I'm not sure how bad your mirror is, but if you haven't taken it out already I would consider doing so. It is an inconvenience and a slight safety issue without it, but my mirror sharted onto my shifter console. Luckily it isn't as bad as some of the stories I've heard. |

I'm guessing that "....sharted..." means shattered. If so then I didn't know that was very likely to happen. My mirror displays different shades and patterns behind it's surface but no sign of disintegrating. It's been doing this for a couple years but still functions okay as a mirror although it doesn't dim at night anymore. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. I think I'll risk the possibility of it breaking into bits rather than risk drawing the attention of the local LEO's who have little else to do other than to find an excuse to issue a ticket. |

LOL, sorry for the poor movie reference (Along Came Polly). Actually, there is a liquid sandwiched between two pieces of glass in the mirror assembly. In some cases the dimming function just quits and the mirror just has the discoloration that you are referring to. However, sometimes the seals fail and the liquid leaks out, and if under pressure will spray out. Which is what happened in my X. The chemical will stain and/or destroy plastics and leather. I went ahead and removed the mirror to prevent further damage.
Here is the message from Dani at Magnadon
"The material contains a solvent that adversely affects some plastics and paints. You cannot clean it because the solvent damages the plastic and the finish. It would be similar to if you put nail polish remover on a plastic or painted surface.

Well, now I can understand why you recommended removing it ASAP. Had I realized there was potential for it to spray caustic liquid I probably would have had the dealer replace it long ago, I imagine for several hundred dollars, ouch. However, as they say, "ignorance is bliss" and happily it appears I'll get a free replacement before the original mirror starts burping. By the way, Dani Emailed just now to say the new mirror is on it's way, yippee. Here's to our both having a happy installation experience. |

... I replaced my 01 mirror without any major problem. There was a moment's suspense when one of the screws dropped down and I thought it went into the no-man's land called the space between the driver's seat and the center console. Thankfully it was on the floor.
Sincecure, thanks for the pics. You're right it does take a lot of force to get the dang mirror off, and only slightly less to put the new one in place. I didn't hear a click either. |

Same to you. I got the email yesterday and it was delivered today :D
I actually found it easier removing than putting it back on. It just didn't feel like it slid all the way onto the bracket. Oh well, at least if it falls off it will still be hanging by the wires. |

Mine came a little while ago and I've struggled for the past half hour trying to get the old mirror off. Can you give me some pointers on how to get it off? So far I've examined it from every possible angle and have tried pushing against the metal clip as well as prying the clip away from the housing with a screwdriver. Either way, pushing against the clip or prying outward, while pushing downward at the same angle as the windshield I make no progress and afraid I'll surely crack the windshield if I apply more force.
Thanks. |

I don't know what other people did, but I was reclining face up towards the sky against the dashboard and pulled the thing down with steady force instead of pushing. Just be careful not to hit your face. |

Actually no. I tried that initially but I didn't feel it was helping. I didn't break any tabs so I don't think it's essential. And the new mirror didn't click into place either. |

Actually no. I tried that initially but I didn't feel it was helping. I didn't break any tabs so I don't think it's essential. And the new mirror didn't click into place either.
Okay, I'll stop messing with the metal clip and put my energy into pulling down on that sucker........and trying to keep my fat face out of the way.
Thanks. |

Not only are you a Super Senior you are also clearly a master mirror technition and also The Man! Thanks, your technique worked, forget the clip and pull down steadily and pop goes the weasel, so to speak. Don't remember how it works but I get a green light when I press the "auto" button with the headlights on, guess it will do it's thing automatically now. Of course I almost never drive anywhere at night but I'm ready if I do. Thanks. |

Hey, that's what this forum is for! Glad to help, but I stand on the shoulders of other members here, to paraphrase a more worthy intellect. Now go out and enjoy your ride. And don't forget to contribute to the site. :D |

Go to page 2 of this thread and scroll down to "Sinecure"s post with the pictures. He shows/explains how to remove the lights/glasses holder and more info. |

You've got to love the internet!
I read through the thread on this mirror issue after seeing my mirror die before my eyes. I had no idea that it could be harmful if it leaks so I decided to remove it and wait for the replacement. Family health comes first. I want to thank everyone who posted for giving such great instructions on how to DIY this fix.
Mine was easy to remove and here's what I did. From the passenger's side I grasped the mirror arm with my right hand and with my left hand I used my index and middle finger tips to press forward on the backside of the mirror's arm. The finger tips fit between the headliner and mirror arm base and push forward while the right hand pulls and wiggles the mirror assembly until it slides towards the front of the vehicle. If you support your right hand against the glass it keeps the mirror from scratching the windsheild. BTW it only moves forward about an 1/2" before its off the mounting plate. Also, the metal clip mentioned before is not a locking tab. It is simply part of the clamping device to keep tension on the mount plate and on closer inspection that clip looking thing is soley there to hold and direct the wiring down to the mirror and secure the plastic cover in place. It's bent up so that it does not chafe the wires that pass beneath.
Great thread and very helpful.

THANK YOU to the list!
I just bought my 2004 MDX back in June and never even thought to use the auto-dim feature. I just tried it last month and thought to myself that it wasn't working.
I've now sent an email to Dani, and I hope to get a response tomorrow (Monday.) I'll keep everyone posted. |

Good Luck...I tried for a month to get a response from someone at Donnelly. I heard they are no longer offering replacements directly and you would now have to go through an Acrua dealer for a replacement. |

Today I spent a total of a few hours on the phone with Acura, Magna Donnelly, and my local dealer.
As mentioned above, Magna Donnely will not do replacements anymore, and would not sell direct to consumer (I was hoping for wholesale pricing.)
I called Acura's main 800 number. They said my 2001 MDX at 81,179 miles is out of warranty. I explained the problem and they said they may consider doing it as a courtesy, but I would have to get the dealer to 'diagnose' the mirror problem first.
The dealer where I always have it serviced wants $110 just to diagnose it. Another dealer, about 25 miles away, wants roughly half - $57 - for the diagnostic. Ironically, the less expensive dealer is in the Princeton, NJ area, which would suggest thet'd be more expensive. Not only were they cheaper for the diagnostic, but their website had the mirror, part # 76400-SEP-A02ZA, at $84.66 down from the MSRP of $99.60. My regular dealership charges $129.00 for the same mirror on their website - a $45 difference for the same part. |

The person I spoke with Monday at Magna Donnelly said that Dani had left the company for another job and that they did not replace her. The e-mail I had sent to her address on Saturday bounced. |
