Friends,
I am off to Phoenix, AZ between 12/25 to 12/31. I will be visiting the Grand Canyon maybe for a day.
Do we have members here who know more about Phoenix and Los Angeles as well?
I would like to cover LA by driving down from Phoenix as I am going there all the way from the east coast.
So , please shoot out some thoughts on what places would be best around Phoenix and in LA.
NOTE: I also have my wife and 2 year 'ol kid, so notin' fishy this time ;)
Thanks very much ,

| Would it not be a little easier to go to LA before Phoenix? LA is 387 miles WEST of Phoenix. |

| Well, our base idea was to visit Grand Canyon and I booked my tickets. But I then heard LA is not very far off so thought I get there as well from Phoenix by road. |

You will also want to make the Grand Canyon trip at least a one night stay. I would really recommend 2 nights. The Arizona side is 230 miles from Phoenix.
I see that you are driving to Phoenix from the east coast. I think your best bet is finishing your Phoenix business and then driving to LA. After that drive to LA spend as much time as desired and then to to Las Vegas, spend some time there and then on to the Grand Canyon.
The Grand Canyon is 230 miles north of Phoenix so not just a one day drive up and back and sight seeing. You need at least one night, preferrably two there. A stop in Las Vegas can be inexpensive and very entertaining. Will cost nothing but lodging and food if you do not gamble and stay away from the expensive shows. A little searching on the computer can find good prices for lodging.
Have a good trip. |

Thanks GC!
Mistake - I am flying down to Phoenix from Virginia. I will then my a rental at my disposal for 1 week. So that's the reason I had to do Phoenix first and also have to return to VA from Phoenix.
Thanks again for the inputs, will hit those places.

So what is there to do in Phoenix ? I'm going in a couple of weeks. Getting there Friday around noon. Probably leaving early Monday morning. Not sure I want to make the trip to Grand Canyon, but it's a possiblity. Is it an easy 230 miles ?
Thanks. |

| On your way to or on your way back to the Grand Canyon from Phoenix, be sure to drive through Sedona. It is a beautiful area to see, and am sure you will enjoy it. |

Save the Grand Canyon for another trip. A weekend is too short.
If you're a golfer, Phoenix is mecca (over 200 courses). Resorts and spas are a big deal here. If you like to hike, the parks that surround the city are spectacular. Although wild flowers are past peak, this year's rain has brought incredible green to everything. Sedona is worth the trip, even if you only have a weekend. And of course, there's the usual big city stuff. (Phoenix just pasted Philadelphia for the position of fifth largest US city.) Although April is starting to get worm, the real heat doesn't come until May. Stay away in July and August, the humidity brought with the monsoon season makes this place worse than Houston. |

If I were you'd I would DEFINATELY stick to PHX/Scottsdale area. PLENTY to do in a week.
If you must drive somewhere, MAYBE Tuson and/or Sedona.
WAY WAY WAY too many miles to drive from PHX to LA in a week, especially in some crappy rental instead of MDX!!! |

Well, I'm not going to Phoenix...at least not now. We were trying to use one of a few travel certificates Mrs. Nightguy earned. The airline can get me there, but can't get me a flight back in time to work Monday night. So I'm going to one of the wife's other work destinations...Chicago !
I definitely want to get to Phoenix. My neighbors just got back from their winter place in Apache Junction. I didn't realize how close that is to Phoenix. So they gave me a lot of tips and destinations. My image of Phoenix is the opening shots of Psycho. The neighbors tell me it's a lot busier now. :) |

I've spent lots there through the years. I guess it's already been close to 2 years since I was last there. In '03 I saw the Cubs/Sox game at Wrigley. It doesn't get much better than that. I wish the old Bismarck Hotel was still there.
I just talked to my neighbor about the flight situation. He thinks it might be all the snowbirds coming back. I hadn't really thought of that. You'd think they could find some additional flights through connections or something. |

Got back from Chicago yesterday afternoon. I have to say the city is a lot cleaner and feels a lot safer than I remember it. So much for spring being in Chicago. Except for the weather, I had a great time. Had a friendly policeman show me how to get to my hotel on the trains from O' Hare. We went to the Field Museum, Soldier Field, and Sears Tower. Shopped with Mrs. Nightguy until I dropped on Michigan Ave. Saw Elton John at Allstate Arena (what a weird place) Saturday. He said during the show that not many people know but he's a huge baseball fan and he dedicated 'Your Song' to Greg Maddux, which resulted in a chorus of boos from Sox fans. That was pretty funny.
Stayed on the north end of downtown in the Rush St. area where it was much quieter than on the MM. Also saw a lot of really nice cars near the hotel.
Anyway, you Chicagoland people should be proud. I can't wait to come back. Actually I'll probably go to a game at Wrigley sometime this summer. I can't wait. :) |
