Just some quick information in case you run into the same problem.
I went to leave work this evening and upon starting the car i pushed the brake in and attempted to put the MDX in reverse, but I was unable to get the lever to move from park. So i attempted to use the manual shift release which is located under the tiny removable cover to the right of the shifter. I was able to put the MDX in gear but as it was already dark out i noticed i had no brake lights due to my guess a faulty brake switch which had caused the gear shift not to release.
I phoned acura roadside to have the MDX towed to the dealership for repair. I did not want to drive it at night with no brake lights.
I then waited 1 hour and 45 minutes for the tow truck to arrive. The drive told me he wanted to take a look because he has seen this problem on numerous Hondas and Acuras. He climbed under the dash by the break peddle and took his metal flashlight and gave the brake switch a few taps then moved the lever using his finger. He then pushed the brake peddle and i once again had working brake lights, and the gear shift once again was working.
He said that the little plunger inside gets stuck and sometimes a few taps will free it to get you going till you can take it in for repair. So if you dont wanna wait for a tow truck, please give this a try.
p.s. keep a flashlight handy in case its dark out so you can see what your tapping. :) |

Good tip buddy. I would NEVER imagine a brake switch going bad on a modern car, so your experience teach us (again) we should always look for the obvious first (at least obvious to the mechanically inclined). In a way, it's nice to have such warning if you have no brake lights :p
