Low Beams-Problem?? or OK?? - Click HERE for Original Thread

When driving on the Interstate, or other divided highway, where I have to keep to lights on low to prevent blinding oncoming drivers I feel like my low beams are not providing sufficient light. I took the MDX in to the dealer to check the setting. Mechanic said that the lights were adjusted too high and beam was spreading so much that light was diluted. Now I have good light on road but at such a short distance ahead of the truck that I do not feel it is safe to drive the speed limit.

Anybody else feel they have had less than adequate low beams? If so what have you done to correct the situation?

Thanks.

Lots of folks (including myself) have switched to aftermarket bulbs. Silverstars are not as brilliantly blue as some, but have an acceptable, though shortend lifespan.

Better, but more costly, is to put in aftermatket HIDs -- lots of threads, and I think I few sponsors.

Good luck!

How about having the fog lights on? Is that an option?
I keep mine on all the time, gives me maximum light and
no one in oncoming traffic has ever flashed me to turn them off.

I have tried this. Fog lights by design only provide short distance light. They will not reach anywhere near as far as low beams.

Renov8r, what is an HID? I have considered aftermarket bulbs. Hopefully that will be the answer. I have seen threads where people say they have changed bulbs but didn't know whether they did this because of a problem or just because they wanted to. Seems a lot of people on here just like to add things to their vehicle. I am vry plain jane and utilitarian in my approach. Only add things that are needed because of the way I want to use the vehicle or the improve something lacking because of design. I suspect this light problem is a design "thinky."

Thanks for the replies.

HID is the way to go. Once you have it, you never want to be without it. I would suggest a D2s DOT projector retro but a regular kit would work well, too. Here's a link to my retro:

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Here is what I have done - and I have trouble seeing at night:

1) Aim your low beams yourself. A rough setting can be done against a wall at about 30 feet. The low beams should be at the same level (not up or down) as you back away from the wall and should not diverge.

2) Go out on the road to make fine adjustments.

3) Adjust fog lamps to be about 18 inches below the low beams on the wall at about 30 feet.

4) Go on the open road, stop your car, cover the low beams and make final adjustment on the fogs.

5) There are threads on how to adjust both the fogs and low beams. In fact I started a thread on how to adjust fogs.

6) Replace both the high and low beams with Silver Stars. I am now in my 14 month with these bulbs. They are worth the extra money. Keep your old bulbs as spares!

Finally, it is very unusual for dealers to spend the time and effort to accurately adjust lights. They will almost always err on the side of aiming too low - to prevent you from coming back because of people flashing you!

I have had to set my lights on my Audi, BMW and Acura. Only my Porsche was done properly.

Good luck!

Regarding the fogs:
They are low, and wide. However, with the proper souped-up Silverstars in the fogs and/or lows, and by raising the fog beam height, you can throw a lot more light to the sides, and some more light to the front.

9006 are low beam bulbs, and they have one ridge inside the connector. That means that 9005 high beam bulbs, with their two internal ridges intact, will not snap in to the fogs. Now, if the two ridges were no longer intact, other results may possibly be obtained.

Not that I would recommend this or anything.

I don't think Silverstars are an option for G.Colton as it appears he has an '04 like I do. It's tough to find good replacement options for that H11 bulb.

I have the same problem with regard to insufficient lighting. I'd like to do an HID kit from XenonDepot when the time (and $) is right.

Even with HID lighting, I find fog lights very effective for dark country roads. Good side lighting for roads with no street lighting.

Of course they are only good if you are driving cautiously. They are easy to out-drive. You will see things hidden in the shadows, but never be able to stop in time if you are driving too fast.

Dale, the projectors I have are amazing with regards to foreground lighting. When I turn on my fogs, I barely notice they are on. They only fill in a small area up close to the bumper with light. The spread on the projectors is pretty impressive too. I need to post some pics when I get a chance.

That's certainly an added benefit then. Close-in driving is markedly different with conventional (non-proj.) with the fogs off or on.
