2005 NAVI / XM Display Bug - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have now owned my 2005 for about a month now and have noticed a bug that does not have any consistency and wondering if anyone else has experienced it. When holding down the Tuning button for a few seconds the display on the NAVI changes to the XM information. Most of the time this does work, but once in a while when I hit it, it just goes to the map screen instead (the beep does happen though). The majority of the time you can never get the XM screen to come on unless you turn of the car so the NAVI reboots. This problem only happens right after you start the car. What I am saying is that if I get in the car and after the NAVI boots and if the XM screen does display, I can drive forever changing screens, but the problem won't develop. It only happens right after starting the car.

This problem has happened to me like maybe 15 to 20% of the time. Tonight it happened to me twice in a row (after 2 restarts). Another thing that is weird is when the problem is happening, like I said, when you hold the tuning botton down, the map screen comes on instead, but if you then tap the tuning button the audio settings screen comes on like it is supposed to. After it dissapears, I then hold down the tuning button again, and instead of the map screen coming on, it is the audio settings screen. Totally weird.

To me it sounds like something the dealer will not be able to fix. Anyone else experience this. I doubt I am the only one, but maybe a lot of you don't use the XM display as much. I tend to do it everytime I get in the car.

I think I have been noticing that as well (although not with as much detail as you have noted). I have definitely had it happen a few times where I would hold down the tuning button, hear the beep, but get no screen...

That has happenned to me a couple of times now. I get the audio set up screen instead of the radio info screen. When I turn off the car and then turn it back on then I can get the radio info screen again. Im not sure what is causing it. Theres seems to be no pattern to the problem, it seems to be totally random.

Let us not forget that the Navi is powered by an embedded version of Windows CE. Need I say more?

Alt-Ctrl-Del . Learn to embrace it.

I have noticed the same problem. It seems to happen after I put the car in reverse before the navi finishes initializing and the backup camera kicks on. Only way to get it straight seems to be to turn off the car and restart.

Anyone have any idea if there is a way to have the navi screen default to the radio display instead of going blank?

I've also had the same problem quite a few times. I also believe it has something to do with using the reverse camera while the system is still booting. One thing I have noticed is that instead of turning the car off and back on again to fix it, all you have to to is put the car in reverse for a second until the rear camera comes up, then go back into drive. Every time I have tried this the XM display starts working again. Maybe this is why the XM display feature is not documented?

Happens to me too

I was visiting the Ody web site today and the new '05 Odys are experiencing the same problem.

amazing how one names a thread can make a difference.

I have had my X for a month now and have not been able to duplicate this problem. Will keep trying though since I am curious why one car would have this problem and another wouldn't. You would think all would have the same bug!

Try shifting into reverse immediately after you start up the car - before the navi finishes booting up.

This same issue happens to me when I put the car in reverse only a couple of sec after starting the engine and clearly is related to the lag time it takes the NAV screen to start up. Shifting to reverse and engaging the backup video seems to pre-empt the start-up process.

However - all I do is push the "cancel" button on the left panel and the black screen lights back up and there I don't have to go through a double sequence of putting the car back in park, etc. Have any of you tried this ?

IOW - after going into the reverse, and the camera comes on, and then shifting back into drive...the screen *does* go black (which is the so-called "bug") - however, just push the "cancel" button on the left panel and the screen lights back up...usually to the initial disclaimer screen where you respond "ok" on the touchscreen.

the bug is not that it goes black, the bug is that you can't bring up the audio controls.

oops...my misunderstanding.

Now, if someone can just figure out a way to get the screen to default to the audio controls instead of going blank.....

I think that has to be the most poorly designed function of all. Default to a black screen. At least on prior models, it was able to default to the time which was at least useful.

slocko....speaking of time on the NAV screen....I have seen some jpgs of others' that shows the clock squarely in the middle of the NAV screen.

Can anyone tell me how to:
a) turn the screen entirely off ?
b) get a clock to be positioned squarely on the NAV screen (not just on the small radio face) ?

Worn out from work today and don't want to dig through that manual.

TIA
ghabicht
The clock was the default screen on the earlier versions of the navigation system (IMHO - it was much better than a blank screen or trying to locate the clock on the radio face - but I guess you can always just hit the voice button and say "what time is it?")

I still haven't run into the nav/XM problem yet. I am kinda surprised I wouldn't have this problem!

I have now found the bug you guys have been talking about! I just neded to put it in reverse immediately after starting the car. If I hesitate for 15+ seconds before shifting into re verse it doesn't happen. When I stopped, I shifted into part then back to drive. The XM display seemed to work again after that.

I'm not sure if we should call this a "bug". (No, it's certainly not a Feature, either).
Our heaters take longer than that to heat up the vehicle, for example. Our vehicles won't do 140 mph, but that's not a bug. It is a limitation of performance, but a bug?
I've found that I can just push the Map button again, and everything starts over just fine.
diverman
Wether we call it a bug, a feature, a performance limitation or anything else, it is still not a big deal! All I have to do is wait a few more seconds before I shift into reverse and this is not an issue.

If this is the worst issue I have with my X than I will be a happy guy!

Anyone have a fix for the varying boot times of the system?? Mine sometimes boots in a second or two and other times it takes 15 to 20 !! The touble is that the rearview camera doesn't turn on until the boot is finished. And the 1st thing I do 95% of the time is backup, either out of my garage or out of a parking space -- very annoying javascript:smilie(':3:')

go into setup and touch the OFF button under display
it will turn off the screen

Do you still have the problem if you first wait until you press OK on the lawyer screen before you put it in reverse?

I've been waiting the several seconds and then hit OK before going into reverse. The system seems to like that. Plus it's better for the drive train - gets those fluids circulating before you engage the hardware.

I wish I could get the Audio menu to default on instead of the Map though.... I guess it's easy enough to switch between them. Seem like this would have been a nice feature to add in the basic set up: What screen do you want for the default?
blevins
I don't always wait the [sometimes] long time for the "ok" to appear nor for the [sometimes] long time for the rear camera to turn on :(

Seem that both of these events has a randomly long time to turn on. sometimes tho it is only a couple of seconds, sometimes as much as 30!
