Tranny whine after oil jet service - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi all,
Nice forum. Very informative. I stumbled on this site about a week ago. I had no idea that the trannies were having problems. I have an 02 with 98k on it. I've had it for about 8k and I hadn't noticed anything abnormal whatsoever. I called acura and ran the vin to see if the updates had been performed. They had not been done to this rig so they recommended getting it done. After reading about all the problems with the trannies I set up an appointment for the tranny jet kit.

They got me in the next morning and installed the kit and I also had the timing belt and water pump replaced. The recall only covered the new tensioner unless there was damage to timing belt. Of course there was no abnormal wear they said, but It would be in my best interest to change em out. So for 500$ I had them do it.

Now 3 days later while driving I am noticing a faint whine in 3-4 gear between 25-40mph. This noise is only present when my foot is on the gas in either 3rd or 4th gear. If I take my foot off the pedal it goes away. Put it back on and there it is. It is a very faint whine type whirr sound. It seems like it is coming from the passenger area. When it finally shifts into 5th gear the noise is gone. It has got to be coming from tranny.

Does anyone have any insight or had experience with this occurence?
Thanks in advance

I went on a test run with the ACURA tech today in my 02 X touring. Then he kept it all afternoon to test some more. He heard the whine in 4th gear alright. Checked all the fluids. Their conclusion is that the oiljet kit would not have made the (now present) fourth gear whine. Since I don't have the extended warranty on a friggin ACURA it is not covered. Replacement cost is 4500$
They say it's a very faint noise and might not ever get any louder or do any damage. Ya right! When asked " If this vehicle was under warranty, would that tranny come out?" He said YES
Truly is a shame my X is only 3 years old and immaculate.

So buckle up tight kids here we gooo.

The dealership is not the final word. The Owners Manual lays out the process for mediation, arbitration and litigation. For $4,500, you're obviously not going to stop here.
One pice of advice- send a nice letter to the dealership, thanking them for their determination that "if if was covered by warranty, they would replace it", and objecting to their determination that this was not connected to the recall. Use phrases like "imminent safety hazard".
How can they possibly know without tearing the tranny down if it was connected to the recall? And, Honda does not allow them to disassemble the tranny.

We are looking at an '01 MDX with 60k....considering buying it. The only concern is the tranny whine you described is present with the one I am looking at....otherwise a super clean car.

Could you share with me what your next step has been...did the dealership take care of it? Have you received other replies that have helped you solve the problem? I am trying to determine whether this problem can be taken care of...

Thank for any help you can offer....

I have not done anything else as of yet. The dealership checked it and rechecked over 2 days and felt the problem was minor. However like I said before, the tech did say Acura would replace this tranny If I had the extended warranty. So far the noise hasn't gotten any louder, and the tranny shifts like it should. Our car is also as clean as NEW and we love it. We are just going to drive it for now. We are taking a road trip for the holidays and will be driving 600 miles round trip. This will give me a good indication of how it performs and sounds through the mountain pass and stuff.

Wish I could of been more help. I didn't get any real good feedback as of yet. If you learn something about our sound. Could you please let me know.

I would stay away if I were you. These trannies are failing at an alarming (to me) rate. There have been numerous postings as of late with trannies failing around the 90,000 mark. I don't know how long you would keep the vehicle, but when I buy a new vehicle, I expect to get around 150,000 without replacing a transmission or other major component.

I know I won't be keeping my '03 MDX past 50,000. It's too bad, because it is a nice riding, very functional vehicle. I just can't bear to wait for the tranny "shoe to drop" without explicit warranty coverage. Now, if Acura would step up and formally extend the trnasmission warranty to 90,000, I'd probably keep it.
