Need to make room in my garage for all my junk and I saw in home depot and lowes the HyLoft overhead storage system. Does anyone have this installed in their garage? Any opinions? It says that it can hold up to 250 pounds, but kinda scarry since it just held by screws from the rafters on the ceiling.

We have 3 installed in our garage; put 'em in a couple of years ago (at least). They're excellent. Ours are the "original" 48x48 but I believe they're selling the 45x45 to consumers, now.

Check Amazon...I noticed them on sale last week for about $50ea, shipped free. Great deal @ that price (I think regular price is $70 or $80).

The screws are pretty large bolts that go directly into the rafters. We have a good amount of stuff on ours and they're very sturdy. Keep in mind that there's a max of 2 units per rafter, so if you want more than 2 adjacent you might need to go across the rafters rather than along them.

Worm. So how did you attached them side by side? Each rafter would have a set of ceiling angle brackets for each of the 45x45.
Therefore the first rafter would have 2 angle brackets.
Then the next rafter would have 4 angle backets? (one set for the first 45x45 attached from step 1, and one set for the next 45x45).
Then the next rafter would also have 4 angel brackets for the next 45x45 and so on?

I have 2 on the same rafter, and one a couple over.

However, the rafters are 24" on center, so when you're mounting them across rafters, the edges go about halfway between the rafters, so the two units on seperate rafters would basically meet in the middle. There's just 1 bracket per rafter.

I guess with the 45x45 unit (rather than the "old" 4x4 I have) there'd be a 3 inch gap between the units if you're using the across-rafter method. That small a gap shouldn't be an issue.

I can attempt a pic in the garage if that would be helpful; even though I don't have a cross-rafter setup, you'd be able to see how 1 unit spans halfway.

Lemme know.

These overhead systems hook to the joists overhead in your garage. The rafters are the sloping beams that are the support for your roof.

Now that we have that out of the way ( and I will have to look it up again tomorrow as I never remember it) if you want to increase the strength of your system you can tie the joists to the rafters. I still would not exceed the 250 lbs., but it may make you feel better about having the load over your vehicle. You can bolt/nail 1x4s, 2x4s or a metal bar between the joist and rafter.

I hang 4x8 sheets of plywood and other woods overhead in this manner. In all I have 4 seperate overhead storage areas. Two of which are reinforced as I stated.

Thanks for clarifying the terminology. I never get any of it right, whether it's horizontal or vertical. I do know which is the floor and which is the roof, just nothing in between :)
