| Like to know when you use the fog light. |

| It really makes no sense to use them other than during the conditions for which they are designed. They only cover a small area near the vehicle that is already covered. Besides, it looks rather "nerdy" to drive with them on when not needed. |

I leave them on Auto all the time with the low beams at night. They illuminate the side of dark roads, where deer lurk. They also present a better picture so other drivers can see you.
(I don't feel nerdy, either.)

i don't feel nerdy leaving the fog light on even though it does not make the illumination of the lights brighter or wider... i actually think it looks better with the fog lights and low beam on together.
but then again, i am a nerd. |

I agree 100%....
The fog lights help a lot on dark roads..
Leave 'em on all the time!! |

| I leave them on all the time. They definitely add to side illumination and thus makes it safer. |

| One question for those who use "fog" lights all of the time. If you see something on the "side of the road" could you do anything about it? Now if you are only driving 5 mph you are probably correct. |

I use them because they are there, look good, and they don't obstruct the view of oncoming traffic.
my 2 cents:cool: |

| My projectors do an excellent job of lighting up the sides of the road. I can hardly tell any difference when I turn on the fogs. |

I disagree. They do change the view for oncoming traffic as well as the traffic in front of you. Their illumination without fog to deflect the rays can be blinding. They provide a wider beam pattern than standard headlights. Hence they reach over into the oncoming lane. They are mounted lower than the headlights to illuminate below fog and reduce reflected glare. But the worst glare occurs when they are used on a wet surface, such as a rain covered road with no fog. Then in addition to the wider pattern you also get glare reflected off the road. Come on folks, think about this for a minute. Why do you think they call them FOG LIGHTS?? :readit: :hmmm:
To say they are safer at the cost of blinding other motorists is something I just don't get. Are you saying the the X's headlight system does not supply ample enough illumination on it's own?
While I personally don't have this problem, there are a lot of people, young and old, who have night vision problems. The additional illumination causes them even more trouble. :crazyeye: Do you want to be driving across the road from someone who's having trouble seeing due to the glare you've created at the cost of aesthetics or "safety" :bonk:
Get yourself a good set of air horns. Then you'll really get noticed!:D |

I have an almost daily long drive through the forest. And my old car did not have fog lights. I can see a big difference now. My “side vision” is a lot better now, I can see the side of the road. It is questionable if I can do anything about it driving 50-55 mpr, but it sure makes me feel more in control, thus – safer! As for blinding other drivers with fog lights, this may be true ONLY on the wet road with certain conditions present. And BTW I am certified optician, so I know a thing or two about eyes… :trustme: |

Yeah- The fog lights have reflected from the eyes of deer (twice now) and I was able to stomp the brakes hard enough at 60 mph to have the deer jump in front of the MDX, rather than through the MDX. Several times, I've been alerted to deer that were poised to jump, but did not.
One episode was so close that the damn deer had to tuck in its tail to avoid tail-amputation.
In the Northeast, there are two kinds of drivers: those who have hit a deer, and those that will hit a deer.
See- This Durango didn't have its Fog Lights on: Proof Positive!:D |

What Fog Lights? :2: A few wise guys even checked that option.
How about: "You mean there is a switch to turn them off?" |

The safety is based upon the extra illumination of the road near me. As stated fogs are low and aimed low. They will provide some glare on a wet road but that has never been a problem. The worst problem in my eyes (pun intended) is a misaligned headlight or fog light. Far worse than anything else.
The MDX's lighting does not light up near the vehicle so that is why I use fogs. Maybe the term fogs is obsolete. |

| I have them on all the time. I don't get it, I've had lowered cars, big SUV's and after all the years driving on the wet roads of Seattle, I've never been blinded by a properly aligned foglight. |
|
|
| eurohazard |
I also grew up in Seattle, and also drove lowered cars. But I most definitely have been blinded by some factory fog lights. It really isn't just the fog lights, but in tandem with high bright headlamps......it really is too much for oncoming traffic to take.
In rural areas I use my fogs and encourage everyone else to do the same. But IMHO, I think it's ridiculous to leave the fog lights on (at all times) for inner city/ suburban driving. |

Well, IMHO no one with normal eyesight should get blinded buy PROPERLY ADJUSTED fog lights… however! If you are more then average sensitive to light there are a few things you can do to protect yourself. You can get glasses for night vision with slight tint and anti-reflective coating. Go to any optical store and tell them about your night vision sensitivity. Even you have 20-20 vision, they can still make a pair with plain plastic lenses and coatings I mentioned above. But if you wear prescription, it will definitely help to have a pair of such glasses in the car. You can use them during the day as well BTW.
Now, any custom installed, or replaced fog lights may not be adjusted properly… And there are a lot of them out there. |

Is the question "how do you use your fog light?" (shown as the poll title on the polls main page) or is it "when do you use your fog lights?" (shown as the poll title just above the poll distribution graph).
If it is the first question, just push the button and they come on if your headlights are on and at the low beam setting. (Note - there are two lights, not just one as implied in the first page question). If it is the second question, I normally only use them when fog appears, which is quite often in the Pacific NW in the winter. |

Ah! My favorite kind of driver!
Originally, foglights were meant to be used INSTEAD of headlights during foggy conditions: headlights illuminate the fog directly in front of a car, thus making it difficult for a driver to see on a foggy night. Foglights alone (which you can't do on an MDX without rewiring), being mounted low, can reach out low to illuminate the road without showing a bright mess of fog at eye-level. |

| I find fogs from other SUVs to be annoying so I only use mine when they are really NEEDED (fog or unlit country road on dark nite). Otherwise, I keep them off - I think it's the considerate thing to do! |

True story - must tell so that I can get flamed!! Rewind tape to last year...
For the first few days after we picked up the MDX, I was actually admiring how nice and bright the MDX's lights were. It really has a nice wide coverage, provided good view of the streets up front, etc - just perfect! Right then I figured this is one set of bulbs I don't have to replace, unlike previous vehicles.
A few days later, I was sitting inside the garage and browsing the manual to figure out where's the fog lights' switch (plus other stuff). I wanted to see how much better it gets with the fog lights on. Found the switch and pressed it! Darn it - now it just got darker! :1pat: Obviously the dealer or somebody that was last in there left the fog lights' switch On when we drove it off their lot. This switch is hiding behind the steering (can't see this switch or indicator light on the switch unless we're looking for it). Luckily it wasn't the high beam or everybody in the opposite direction would be telling me about it... |

mdxx3,
A very plausible and believable story. I drive with my fog lights 100% of the time. During the day, I have them wired as DRL's and at night, I run them with my low beams. I have never been flashed at night even when driving in the city.:4: |
|
|
| Sinecure |
Mine are on all the time - except when the car wash guys turn them off.
Oh, and the 3m film on my fogs is all cracked/messed up, unlike the same film on my headlights. |
|
|
| mdxx3 |
| Ever since Excalibur said he drives with it on all the time, I decided to try it too. Before this it was only sometimes. Roads are now nice and clear at night. Nobody flashed at me so far... |
|
|
| EXCALIBUR |
mdxx3,
Even though there isn't any fog, I am sure you will agree the extra illumination the fog lights provide at night sure helps light up the road better. As long as the fog lights are aimed properly, it should not be a distraction to oncoming motorists.:4: |
|
|
| mdxx3 |
Excalibur,
Oh yes, I like it. The extra illumination is certainly very good.:29: |

We do HIDs in our fog lights though-it makes a world of difference on the back roads at night. |
