I just found a used '04 MDX, touring and nav, 400 miles, with a $39,xxx sticker price. I had just looked another, same specs but 20k miles, and the sales person was trying to hook me with an initial $35k offer. Any ballparks on what I can expect for the one with 400 miles? I checked KBB, recycler.com, carsdirect.com(used) etc, and it seems like the prices listed are a bit high... I'm thinking that if i can get it down to around $35k I'd be doing pretty good and could justify not getting a new '05 for $7k more.

Suggestions? Comments?

Cant...

Is it a used 04 or a demo? Big difference! If it's a demo, you should be able to buy it at invoice less the $1000 incentive Acura is offering to the dealer to get rid of 04's. If it's used, why the heck did someone trade it in with 400 miles on it!!

The "sticker" on a 04 with nav was $41,770 NOT $39,000 and change....are you sure that it has nav???...sounds like a MDX touring model at that price to me.

Clean up your info and we can help you better..

1. Is it a demo or is it truly used? (already titled)
2. Is it a touring model or a touring with nav?

Good luck!!

You could get an '05 for only about $4k more. Check this thread:
Grade my Deal on an '05 Touring/Nav

Remember, the value on an '05 is greater throughout its lifespan. I think you could do better on the '04 if you don't need the newer features. Get quotes from several dealers, there still seems to be a number of leftover 04s on the lots.

More important, the 05 has some pretty cool upgrades over the 04. Navi is better, with some bugs worked out. Has XM. Voice now controls stereo, and is better at recognition. Has Bluetooth link for phones, has OnStar, has diamonds hidden in glove box.
Well, the diamonds aren't in every glove box.
May be worth the extra 5K to you. Or not.

wow thanks for the fast response! you guys are incredible! i am trying to reply from my mobile so bear with me. it is indeed an 04 with touring and nav. saw it in action for myself. i dont know why it only has 414 miles on it but it definitely has a used sticker on it. dont dealers have to mark a car used if it goes over a mileage limit? if you dont think 35k is fair what might be? it is acura certified so that even gives me some extra coverage since it is so new and has such low miles right? thanks again for your speedy responses!

If it's a demo and you finance it, you get "new car" financing at a lower rate than "used car" financing. That could make a big difference. If it's at auction as you say, it must be classified as "used" and you'll pay more in interest. That could close the gap with a demo 04 at a dealer or even the better equipped 05.

Good luck!

There is no mileage limit on miles for a dealer to change a designation from demonstrator to used. The used label comes from the vehicle having been sold and titled by another party. I have bought a demonstrator from a dealer with 5,000 miles. It was a vehicle not only used purely as a demo but also driven by agency employees.

The $35K sounds like a pretty good price. Have you tried to negotiate it lower? May have some more give in it.

I assume this is being sold by a dealer. Have you asked why they have a used with such low mileage?

Getting an 05 instead is a good deal only if you are interested in the few improvements that you would get with the 05. Yes, you get more back later, but you have lost use of your money for all of those years.

Okay, sorry for harping but I am still amazed at the speed at which feedback is provided! I plan on making a donation to this site!

Financing will not be a problem for me (prob gonna pay cash), so I don't care so much about the rate I'll get with a used vs. demo. Doesn't the fact it says "Used" in the window, that it is Acura Certified and that it has plates (I think I saw plates?) mean it is actually used? Might the original buyer have been unable to make the payments or something like that? I suppose I should get the history of the car too to make sure it is clean. The dealer is legally obligated to reveal that quite clearly, right?

I haven't been offered $35k. That was the first offer the sales person made me on the same model but with 20K miles on it. The guy wouldn't tell me a price since I said I was still going to look around a bit (salesperson tactics!). I just wanted to get a feel for what is reasonable, and it's looking to me like $35k is about the max offer I should accept.

Sounds to me that you have already made up your mind on the
$ 35K max. price. I think that vehicle with only 400 miles would be a great buy for that price. I also think the dealer can get more than
$ 35 K for that vehicle with only 400 miles on it?
