Gas mileage dropping so much - Click HERE for Original Thread

my 2002 MDX just pass 50,000 mi, noticed gas mileage dropping from 17.6 mpg to 14.1mpg. I had maintenance at 47, 000 mi about 3 months ago, and I changed all 4 brake pads by myself, did it cause mileage dropping? Maybe I have to change air element, but that cover is so hard to open. Any body has an idea why MPG dropping so much?

Air filter definitely needs to be changed with 47k miles on the original. But that shouldn't contribute to a 3.5 mpg loss. Since you changed the brakes yourself, are you sure the brake pads aren't rubbing when the brakes aren't used?

no, I'm not sure the brake pads aren't rubbing when the brakes aren't used, but how can I tell if that is the cause? The brake feels normal, and there is no brake noise. Do you know how to check brake pads if they are properly installed?

I'm no mechanic, but probably the easiest way to tell is to let off the gas pedal and make sure your car will still slowly move forward at the same speed it used to.

I went to a brake shop a long time ago to fix some brake squeeling on my old car and the mechanic somehow tightened the pads too much so they were always engaged. Had to take it back the next day to get it fixed.

I would not go past 15K on a stock paper filter. If your drop is sudden it might indicate a faulty emissions component (air bypass valve, O2 sensor, etc.). Other symptoms can be subtle.
Once you have a method, replacing the intake filter is a piece of cake compared to the cabin filter.

To tell is brakes are dragging, jack the vehicle up and rotate wheels by hand. You can tell if it doesn't turn easily.

Drum brakes can be tightened too much. How would you "tighten" a disc brake?

EGR valve is a known wear item. One of the first symptoms is gas mileage goes south. You can also get shuddering or bucking.

Have it checked while you're still under the warranty.
