Looking for advice regarding final warranty checkup for 2002 MDX!
I would like to have them check on things that often go unnoticed until after the warranty has expired. I would like to have it on record that these parts were fine prior to warranty expiration.
They could be very subtle things, such as the slight shift (click) in the Driver's seat, which I had fixed last time. Or the more obvious gas tank thud. (Does the Shift (Click) only affect the Driver's side seat?)
Thanks,

I think the best thing is to review all the 'complaints' here on the forum and check them out yourself.
The dealer will charge you money for checking out 'subtlties'. So your complaints need to be specific to get addressed a warranty items.
Also check and make sure any TSB's were taken care of. The dealer should be able to tell that by running your VIN on the system. But they need to honor those regardless of the warranty.
Many things in a vehicle are not used on a regular basis. I would probably go through the owner's manual and step throuigh all the operations and make sure everything works as advertised. You may find things you never used before! |

Dale,
Where can I find a Free full detailed listing of the TSBs for my 2002 MDX?
Thx! |

| DaleB, are you suggesting that TSBs will be honored even after warranty expiration? I didn't believe that to be the case.... |

| Have them check your motor mounts. I've read a few strings where they failed just after 50k. |

TSBs on vehicles are fixed by the dealer after warranty expiration !!
dealers should not be giving you the run-around... |

| TSBs are separate from warranty issues. They are issued by the manufacturer. Warranty issues are initiated by the customer. |

| Sorry just checked my email, I remember the last service I had a list of all the items I wanted to do, TSB,etc. I can C&P it here. |

Here it is
Please perform the following services and TSBs, and check following problems
1. Safety recall re Automatic Transmission. Letter enclosed. I assume transmission fluid will be replaced. Please call me if fluid is NOT changed during TSB.
2. Clicking in front left strut.TSB 02-028 Can be heard when ambient temp is around 70 deg plus. Possibly cannot reproduce if temp is not 70 deg plus.
3. Rear Brake clunk TSB 04-009, rear brakes clunk after changing directions.
4. Rear suspension rattle when going over bumpy road, same noise can be heard when striking the top portion of rear tires or rim with mallet or hand. Sounds like rattle is coming from brake shields.
5. Whistling coming from sunroof while at speed or when windy.
6. Please check steering alignment, steering is vague at highway speed. Also while accelerating must turn wheel slightly right to keep in straight path, not torque steer. After reaching speed, then need to correct direction by turning slightly left. Have had two previous problems re steering. Please check and advise.
7. Driver seat is shifting again, when making turn, previously fixed. Please re-check.
8. Previously had Tension Pump Recall done on MDX, when engine under load (when A/C compressor is running) slight squeal is heard from that area. Please check.
9. Perform oil change. Coupon enclosed.
10. Adjust parking brake, does not hold. |

Warzau,
It sounds like you have had just about all the issues that I have had.
1.) The Transmission concerns me alot. All they did was take a picture, and install the coolant system for the gears. I am not even sure they changed the transmission fluid. Did they extend the warranty on the transmission?
2.) I had the pinging strut on day 1, it was later fixed by filing-off some flashing on the strut or shock tower, I can't quite remember.
3.) Rear Brake Clunk - I commented on the noisy change of gears from reverse to drive, the dealership said this was normal. Could I have been mistaking the Rear Brake Clunk for Changing Gear Clunk?
4.) Rear Suspension Rattle - I haven't noticed this, but I will listen for it now.
5.) No whistling sunroof yet, but probably with more use the weatherstripping may become an issue like I believe it is with the Front Doors. Is weatherstripping under warranty?
6.) Steering Alignment is also an issue for me. The car pulls slightly left against the crown of the road. The dealership says this is only covered for the first 15,000 miles, and that there will be a $35 charge to correct the alignment. Is this True?
7.) Driver Seat Shift - I just had them fix this, so it sucks that after warranty this problem may reoccur. I think they only fixed the driver seat which seemed odd. I would think that it would affect both the driver and passenger seats. Is this true?
8.) Hmmm, not sure if Tension Pump recall has been performed yet. But my engine sounds like it is powered by a hamster on a squeeky habitrail wheel. The dealer thought it might need a belt adjustment
9.) Where can I get one of those wonderful oil change coupons?
10.) It is pretty flat in Indiana, so I have not used the parking brake much. I better make sure it works, and I will have them check it also.
Here are a few other issues:
1.) Rear Heater lower vent feels as though it is partially blocked in the center to center-left part of the vent, and does not seem as powerful as the upper vent. I have already had the Rear A/C-Heater completely fail before.
2.) Heated Side-View Mirrors no longer seem to melt ice. In the beginning they were excellent. Was the 2002 affected by weeping mirrors, and what are the symptoms?
3.) Thick frost forming on the inside of the rear windows, and side cargo windows. It was 10 degrees with five people in the car for a 45 minute trip. But the frost never disappeared even when it was quite warm in the cabin area.
4.) Transmission slow to engage. When shifting from reverse to drive, and, yes, coming to a complete stop (smart-ass dealer), applying normal pedal pressure there will be a slight pause before engaging abruptly. The dealer says that all cars have a slight pause before engaging, but my Z28 does not. Is this a sign that my transmission needed a little more than just a photo shoot?
(I have also had the EGR valve replaced)
All advice welcome and appreciated!
Thanks,
J.T. |

1 No they dont change out the fluid, I asked them to. No extension on warranty.
3 The rear clunking surprisingly went away when they installed the brake shims
5 the weather stripping should be underwarranty unless they think you might have ripped it. But then again there is a thread here re the rear door WS that is "torn" straight from the factory, some say it is design, other argue it isnt.
6 interesting re the alignment, I have had issues regarding, I would assume if it is a problem before there shouldnt be a charge to correct it. I would call corp on the charge.
7 According to alot of users this only affected the driver side. but then again the driver seat is the most used.
9 The oil coupons should be sent to you by the dealer if they have monthly mailers, the Acura and Honda Dealers always send me these.
I would make sure they check the rest you stated, make Acura pay for any problems still occuring with the MDX. Especially if it was brought up before and it is still not fixed to you satisfaction.
The mirrors were redesigned for 2002 to eliminate weeping mirrors but get them to check re the lack of heat.
Yup there is a slight hesistation when sifting from D to R or viceversa, a quick search and you will find this is common.
I think the frost is just that you had that many people in the MDX and the exterior temp was 10 deg. Was the system on recirculate or fresh.
Above all if you feel they are not helping always go up in chain of command. Worse comes to worse go to another Acura ( can't go to Honda if it is a warranty issue) dealer to get the MDX serviced. Also make sure they document EVERYTHING in the service records what you request and what was done or not done. |

It is nice of them to cover any wheel alignment. $35 is cheap if they check/adjust at all 4 corners. |

New York State mandates warranty alignments for the first 18,000 miles. Getting the dealer to accept that a car is out of alignment is more difficult. I've had to insist (with other cars) the alignment was measured at my expense, with reimbursement if there was any variance noted.
$35 is too cheap. Never go to the cheapest dentist, plastic surgeon, or wheel alignment shop. |

Agreed. I generally would not trust a dealership to do a good alignment (not that they CAN'T) but would pick a reliable shop that specializes in such work if I am paying for it.
Interestingly, some dealerships may take your car to such shops if they are close rather than bother with the work themselves.
After all, they can squeeze in 2 or 3 more oil changes at 30 a pop performed by a low wage grease monkey in the time for a proper alignment to be done. :4: |

Do you think it might be possible he might have been quoting the price to check the alignment, not correct the alignment. Which could possibly be why the price seems too low. We had a bad connection, and I was having difficulty hearing him.
What is a fair price to correct an MDXs alignment?
thx! |

I know shops will not even charge to check alignment, only usually a single (front OR rear adjustment) or double (front AND rear adjustment) charge. But they are in the minority.
That does not mean those who do charge to check are not honest or do inferior work.
The $35 charge is close to what is would cost for a typical front (only) alignment. |
