I just got an 05 MDX. Now I need to Puppy Proof the cargo area. I have a 2 yr Shepherd.

I was thinking about getting the Cargo Liner and/or the Cargo Tray. Which one should I use, or both? Also, how strong is that separation net? Will it stop him from climbing over, or should I look into getting bars?

Any comments or suggestions?

Thanks

I would suggest both which is what I have for my wheaten terrier. The separation net is surprising strong and has kept her out all but one time when she squeezed through on the side. I did not take her in the car for a month after that and she got the message. Lots of mud where I'm at so the tray has been really helpful.

We have the tray and sep net for our Golden (along with a doggie seat belt and a crate that we use on occassion). The net is very strong. She does sometimes poke her head through the side to gain licking access to those in the 2nd row.

Thanks for the advice. I'll get all of them.

Question about the Liner. In the pictures I've seen, it looks as if the Liner is longer the the cargo area, and is protruding out of the back tailgate. Is that an illusion?

We throw 2 blankets in the back and make sure one is long enough to drape over the bumper so the nails don't make marks on the paint. She knows to wait for permission to get in and out.

As convenient as this is, just letting her sit back there is not safe for us or the dog. The best thing to do if possible is to put in a crate and tie it down. Only question is what the ratings of the tie-downs are.

The tray is slippery so you might want to go the blanket route which we got at costco and fits ok. The dog still gets the third row arm rests dirty but thats ok from where I set. Thats a good idea from Nightguy about protecting the paint as my dog has jumped into the tailgate with it being closed once.

As I loaded the dog in tonite I noticed the weight rating of the tie-downs is 50 lbs. If you use all of them they should hold a crate+dog.

The cargo liner is great as it has a flap that covers the bumper it protect against scratches and nail marks it covers the inside pretty well I would get the tray too for ease of cleaning. I keep my 11 month old puppy in a kennel in the back right now but once he get a little less chewey I will use the separation net I would get the tray to clan up any problems easier. As for the slippery problem I solved that pretty easily with the plastic tray that the dog kennels use I purchased a can of the spray on bed liner. I gave the tray a quick scuff with some sandpaper then did a bad job of applying the spray so the surface is not smooth no slipping around if I had thought of it a paint roller would have been good if I had used one of those that is made to texture. My puppy right now is 85 lbs and 11 months picture is from when he was 3 months. MY pup would shred any blanket I put in with him he destroyed 2 of the little kennel pads before I gave up on those.

I thought about throwing a rug on top of the tray. I have a black flufy bathroom rug that he loves to lay on.

Here he is around 12 weeks old.

Here he is around 1 year old.

If he has a favorite rug then it would be perfect as it has "his" smell all over it so it will be familiar to him

We own two Siberian Huskies and they played a major role in why we chose the MDX over other SUVs. So far the X has lived up to our expectations and the accessories we purchased have far surpassed those expectations.

Here is what we did to Dog-Proof our MDX:

Cargo Liner - Excellent coverage, perfect fit, removable when not needed.
Separation Net - good overall, but I have to keep the dogs tethered to the clips otherwise they will squeeze through the side gaps. Probably better for cargo separation than pets, especially pets under 40 lbs.
Paint Protection Film - installed a strip across the back bumper to protect the paint from claw scratches and misc cargo loading.

edit: To answer your questions about the cargo liner, the main piece does not cover the back bumper. It has a separate flap that can be attached to cover the bumper when needed. If you had to choose between the two, I definitely recommend the cargo liner over the cargo tray for pets. The tray doesn't cover nearly as much, and because it is slippery, your dog could come to associate car trips as scary experiences and may become fearful or vocal about them(incessant whining, howling, defecating, or scratching to get out).

The net is very strong and would work well for larger dogs. Be careful if you decide to install bars, they can damage your headliner and possibly lead to premature sagging.

Thanks for the Pics.

I ordered the Net, Liner and Tray.

Is the liner durable? I thought about putting a rug down on top of the tray, but if the liner is durable, I'll just leave it out when I'm hauling the dog.

BTW, where can I get a paint protection strip, how do you put on?

They're usually part of a bigger "clearbra" kit but you can sometimes find the 3M clear protection stuff in pieces.

If you have difficulty finding an individual piece, shoot Wilson Wong (username is wwong) a PM or email. He's a 3M distributor and could cut something to size for him; just let him know the purpose/location and measurements you want.

He's cut a bunch of great rattle-reducing foam pieces for the X, Pilot and G35, along with paint protection tape for door edges, interior pillars, etc. Good guy.

I have both the cargo liner and the separation net to keep both of my Shepherds secured in the back. Unfortunately the thing I found is that both dogs have managed to slide through the gap on both sides near the top (the male is 85lbs and the female is 71lbs).

Somehow one of them managed to scratch the top of the plastic dash on the passenger side near the airbag (and this is in a 2 month old 2005 MDX) while I ran into the post office.

Think I'm going to have to move to a separation net or bar that covers a wider area.

Anyone know how to remove scratches from the plastic dash?

Paint protection film is available in rolls or strips from most body shop supply stores. Check your yellow pages and call around, any shops that carry 3M products should be able to order it if they don't have it in stock. The rolls can be pretty expensive and you won't need that much anyway, so I recommend going with the strips. It can be cut to any length, the size of the piece I used for the rear bumper ledge is about 3" x 45". Here is a link for what I think would best suit your needs:

3M Paint Protection Film Strips, 4" x 84" strip - price ranges from $25 - $40

Whatever you have left you can use for the door jams (protects from shoe scuffing), or even the side view mirrors. I do not recommend attempting to do the front bumper or hood with the strips or without the proper experience. Let me know when you're ready to install the film and I'll send you some instructions. All you need is a squegee, spray bottle, rubbing alcohol and water.

As for the cargo liner, from what I can tell, it made of a very durable material, kind of canvas-like but not that thick. Sand, dirt and pet hair vacuum clean pretty easily, much easier than trying to get it out of the carpet.

Another big plus is it seems very scratch/tear resistant.

Installation tip:

Some parts of the liner are held in place by velcro. When installing the velcro tabs, be sure to clean the vinyl thoroughly with the included alcohol wipes. If the surface is not completely clean, the velcro tabs may come up and you'll have to buy more and do it over again. In fact I recommend cleaning each area twice.

I just received the Net and Liner today. The tray is out of stock and won't be in until Monday.

The Liner seems very durable, canvas like. I thought it was some kind of softer cloth. The Net is stronger then I thought too. I'm going to install them tomorrow. But I'm happy with them so far.

I'll look into the Paint Protection strips.

Thanks for the info.

I have not purchased my MDX yet (waiting for settlement in Feb), but from what I can tell, the cargo liner requires velcro to be taped onto visible surfaces in the cabin (i.e: long strips under back windows). Is this true? Because of this, I was leaning to the cargo tray & separation net method. I think the cargo liner would do a great job keeping my dog's (Great Pyranees) hair of the interior better than the tray, but visible velcro is a dealbreaker. Any thoughts or successful workarounds?

What is short haired turtle? Or is that a pet replacement suggestion? (My wife's dog so I'd have no say in that anyway. :D )
Morph
The liner is held in place by several tuck points, two loops, and I think only eight velcro tabs.

Also the velcro is black, so if you have a black interior the tabs are not even noticeable.

I don't take the liner out unless you want to use the 3rd row seats there is no reason to remove the liner. The liner is very rough so the good news is the dogs don't slip bad news is hair sticks to it. I have a Komndor cousin to the Pyr

Looking back now I am glad i bought the liner instead of the tray. If I need to use the 3rd row at anytime even away from home I dont need to stow away the tray I just un-velco the liner and roll it up, enough for the 3rd row to go up. I'm still semi protected in the remaining rear trunk
