Does anyone know the reasoning behind the Automatic Headlight logic? I'm puzzled on why they stay on when I turn off the car, and then turn off as soon as I open the door.
Frequently when I pull in my garage, they turn on because of the lower light level. I'd expect them to go out when I shut it off or remove the key. Now I feel I have to hurry to unplug my Pocket PC from the newly installed Blitsafe and gather things up to take inside so I don't drain the battery. And sometimes I just want to sit there and continue to enjoy the music and/or heated seats.
For the life of me, I can't see why Honda made the logic this way. Any ideas?

I don't know the rationale for this either but I run into the same issue when I pull into my garage.
Instead of opening the door to turn off the headlights you can just turn the headlight switch to manual and the back to auto (after the ignition is turned off) and the lights will turn off. |

Don't be in a big hurry. You will not run the battery down that fast. Now if you sit there for 45 or 60 minutes you may start to get a little nervous. |

| Wouldn't the heated seats drain the battery faster than the lights ? |

I am all the way with G. Colton on this: in order to drain your battery with pocket PC, you need to spend a few hours in your car.
 |

Then what's the point of the automatic feature? I assume Honda had some intentions in designing it this way. It just perplexes me that it I can't figure out why. To me it makes much more sense to use the ignition to turn them off.
Sorry for the late thanks for the reply, I couldn't get to my computer for a couple days.

I would bet that there is wide latitude for these kind of decisions. One engineer might be able to decide what he prefers is "the rule".
In my other vehicle (01 Bravada) the auto headlights will go on after you release the parking brake. When you park the radio will stay on until you open the doors.
As I doubt that any manufacturer has been sued for these kind of things, it is probably one of the few areas that the engineer has freedom.
I think that the BMW iDrive system lets the driver(s) set their preference for that kind of stuff, though the interface is quite convulated... |

Every now and then I get asked to participate in consumer focus groups. (Hey- it's $200 cash!) One of them was to discuss these kind of preferences. We jammed for two hours on the good and bad of various choices in a durable consumer good.
I bet everything about cars has been determined by either many focus groups, or a data analysis of consumer purchasing preferences, or both. |

| Could it have something to do with the fact the instrument lights come on when you open the door ? Maybe the wiring can't be easily separated since the dash lights obviously come on when the lights are on. |

Guess I'll just put it in the Tootsie Pop category... The world may never know! ;)
