I'm new here. I have a 2001 MDX, touring, navi. I am sick of not having XM, and I don't want to fill any more space with the XM commander or other external XM piece. So I got a bracket, will be getting a new head unit (probabaly Alpine.) My question is - when I get the wiring bracket which fits the head unit to the vehicle's bracket, do I need to worry about any other wiring? Do I need to worry about the RCA outputs if I'm not putting in a new amp? Or will it just basically "plug and play?" Thanks in advance for your assistance!

When integrating into the Bose system, you need an adapter for the speaker level out of the head unit to the Bose amp, if you don't, you will overload the input section of the amp. The parts you need for a complete install are: Metra 70-1721 harness, Metra 99-7866 dash kit, an interface device (Peripheral SVEN4, Soundgate XR4, or equivalent).

Thanks for the reply. So I can't just hook up the bracket which goes from the head unit to the vehicle wiring? If you buy from Crutchfield they give you a bracket specifically matching the head unit to your vehicle. Are you saying I can't use that, I have to use another one? And what kind of "interface" are you talking about? Where can I find these things?

The interfacre allows you to match the output of the head unit to the input stage of the Bose amp. You can use the supplied harness, you would just need to slice the interface into the speaker wires of the harness. I will work up a diagram for you if you need one.

A diagram would be great. I thought that the harnesses would already be connecting all the proper wires together. Also, could you tell me where I can find those items you said I need?

Ok I shopped around the net for all that stuff. If I order from crutchfield, they include the dash mounting kit, so I don't need that specific metra model do I? Also, about those converters, can't I just use the RCA outputs from the new head unit? What exactly do I have to convert? Most of the head units I'm looking at have both RCA and speaker level outputs. Which one do you have to hook up to the vehicle's wiring? I thought that the wiring harness that crutchfield would include with the head unit has all the connections I need. If I have to splice into it, let me know where! Thanks!

If they include a dash kit and harness, don't worry about those parts, but you should use the adapter. I have included a simple diagram. This does not show all of the wires in the harness, but these are the main wires. And yes, I can draw great stick figures.

I ordered the head unit. Apparently crutchfield doesn't give you those items I said I did since they don't have the information for the MDX. So I ordered a metra MDX harness and a dash kit. Now my questions is: Can I splice the MDX's speaker in wires right to the Alpine's speaker out wires? You said something about the power will burn the MDX amps. Can I hook them all up directly, or do I need to bypass some wires in the harness to lower the output power?
Also, the reply you left and said the diagram was there, it doesn't look like it attached. |

Sorry, for some reason, diagram didn't post. I'll try again.

I have a Peripheral VEN4.5 (the predecessor to the SVEN4) if you need one. PM me if you are interested.
