Driving to work one morning 2 weeks ago, listening to the local news, "jury notices went out today for the - - - - - - - - trial. Selected Jurors can expect a lengthy questionaire in this mass murder case, with unique questions such as religious affiliation . . . yadda yadda yadda . . ." I get home that night and sure as bears live in the woods, I have a Jury Notice in my mail. I report on Tuesday.
If selected, I imagine I will be off this board for a while (hmm, "your honor, if selected, I would go through acuramdx.org withdrawal, thereby causing a serious medical impairment . . . will that work?)
I've never been on a jury before, but I have a feeling about this one as I belong to one of the religious affiliations they are talking about.
My question is this, do I seriously pursue my civic duty and try not to avoid jury selection, or do I seek an excuse? My values tell me not to try and get excused and let the process take its course. I'm sure they have heard all the lame excuses anyway. |

| Using key words during the selection process can help you get out of jury duty......so I'm told. Words like "criminal" and the like may make you out to be a "fry them all" type of guy. I think they are looking for neutral people. |

| The judges are in the right -- in most jurisdiction the juror is presumed to say "YES" to the simple "can you uphold the innocent until proven guilty ethic". If you don't play square they can, and HAVE, jailed & fined the jokers... http://www.google.com/search?q=Judg...ospective+juror |

| I got excused by the defense cause I kept rolling my eyes on every other sentences that the defense lawyer said. |

GS,
I've been through the Fresno County jury system. Room full of 200 people and I got pulled for a case that will likely last at least 2 weeks, according to the court.
We had to fill out 'excuses' which would be reviewed by the judge, and counsel. I had airline reservations to visit my dad in San Diego over the 2 weeks (for real). I made it clear he relies on me for emotional and financial support. (not totally 'real' :)
I got off. I don't think the airline reservations alone would have done it. They are tight..esp. for criminal cases from what I can tell.
Good luck! |

Well Dale, if you haven't heard on the news, they sent notices out to 2,500 people. Anyway, I've been delayed for at least another day. They have a 20 page questionaire on this thing. Should prove to be interesting. Not looking forward to being away from work as things are very fast paced there at the moment, its forcing me to truly focus and not spend any time dilly dallying. |

That's right! .....arrrghhh. Well, I wish you luck. Part of the problem is the selection process alone takes up so much of one's time. |

| On the plus side, you get to look inside the legal system. You may not believe what you see. |
