navi conversion problem - Click HERE for Original Thread

Well, not sure if most of you know, i had the conversion done last year, and it worked awesome, but then i had a minor accident in may, and had some minor electrical problems and now my rear compartment is back to stock. This is what i had done last year.

1) spliced into the rear camara for video, added a dvd player and had something done inside the navi area (dont know what exactly what) and have 2 switches for A) video over navi and B) always on rear camara. I have the audio coming thru a wireless Fm modulator that is connected to the dvd player which is placed under the drivers seat.

MY problem like i said, is that i had a electrical prob, and acura ripped out my relays and harness splces that were in the rear camara line, and I need specific directions on where to splice again. SOmehow i lost the original directions i had. I have 3 wires coming out of my dvd player, a red and black wire thats spun together and a 3rd which i think is black. DOes anyone know exactly where to put those cause the wire direction sheet posted only shows 2 wires going into the relay thats connected to the rear camara. Please any info would be great. Thanks

heres the wire diragrahm i was talkin about.

Well who exactly did this conversion, best be is to go back to them.
URIRx98
I am going back to the same place, prob is that its a different installer, its actually the owner thats doing it now, and the 1st installer isnt working with them anymore. He worked with papers i had givien him from this site, so the info is deff here.

hey, that diagram looks awfully familiar! :)

it's been so long i almost didn't recognize my own work.

anyway, it's difficult to answer your question without actually seeing the wires, but if i had to guess, the three wires coming out of your DVD player are:

1) +12V constant
2) +12V ignition
3) ground

the +12V constant is usually so that the dvd player can remember where in the movie it was last playing before it was turned off. it's sort of a memory so that when you turn it back on, it'll remember to go back to the same part of the movie that it last left.

i'm guessing that the two wires are twisted together are the +12V wires. these wires are normally red and orange, though.

the video output from your dvd player shouldn't be any of these wires. it should be from the RCA plugs on the player. the diagram above that shows the lines from the video source are the video outputs.

hope this helps. again, this is merely an educated guess (about those wires) and there's no way for me to be 100% sure without actually seeing it myself.

funny thing just occured to me -- that my simple diagram was not only used by another forum member but was actually brought to a car shop and used by them. i dunno, just something that makes me smile a little just thinking about it....
URIRx98
Yeh that as m that brought the diagram to a shop, its actually the same shop, but prob is its a diff installer, the original installer isnt there anymore. I double checked the wires again, and the twisted wires are red and black, and there is a seperated black wire. I can take pics of the wires, but i guess i should prob search for where those wires go to in the back of the machine. Everything is already connected inside the navi, so i hope maybe that info can help u remember. thanks

i'm a bit confused as to where these wires are. if they are somewhere in the middle of the connections, your guess is just as good as mine.

the best thing to do is to trace them back to the unit (dvd player) to find out what they are.

if they aren't shielded, chances are, they aren't the video outputs.

where are these wires that you are describing? near the back of the car by the camera unit? or near the dvd player? or near the navi unit?

ps - sorry, i don't have IM.
URIRx98
hey, the wires are actually on the side of the car, heading towards the back of the truck, i assume they are part of the dvd player, but im gonna trace them to it tom during the day. I know there was a relay in the area of the rear camara, cause thats how it was connected the 1st time. The 3 wires were somehow connected to the relay, but now its not. Ill try and find the head of the wires saturday.

if they are heading back towards the rear of the vehicle, they might be the power for the relay and the video output from the dvd player. that would be my guess, because i can't imagine anything else that would be going in that direction.

as for the color, i don't think it matters because the installer would just use whatever is available at the time. that's what i did.

while you're there, take some pictures and i'll see if i can help you.
URIRx98
Hey, i was tryin to find a email address for you to send u all the pics, but the site says you dont want to get emails from here. Well, here are a few pics of the wires.

hhmmm....again, really tough to tell without being there myself. other than possibly being the wire for your tv-tuner antenna, the only wires that could possibly be heading back towards the rear of the car (assuming he followed my diagram correctly) would be the power (and possibly ground) for the relay (that switches the video from rear camera to the alternate input, in this case the dvd/tv-tuner) and the video feed.

without really knowing more than that it's heading towards the back of the car, that would be my guess (power for the relay and video feed).

a good way to check is to use a voltmeter on the wires while you turn on and off the switches. then to check if it's a video feed, you can hook up an ohmeter to check for continuity from the video out from the player. use the voltmeter first.

ps - i'd rather converse on this forum in public in case other people can help and/or if it ends up helping other people.

sorry, one more thing. are you sure those are the only wires running towards the back of the vehicle?
URIRx98
its ok to do it here, but those are deff the only wires going to the back of my mdx. i dont know if there are directly from the dvd player or if they are from the navi unit, but lookin at the dvd player, i see a relay or something but not sure exactly what it is from the diagrahm that i put in this thread. ROn from streeteffectz was supposed to help me out, and gave me some info but not sure if it has, i sent it to my installer but he hasnt gotten back to me yet.

Whats that black oval like shape box for? a FM modulator? Also critque of the installer but that is a pretty crappy place for the antenna, just laying on the floor of the MDX?!

Perhaps that relay is to switch between the DVD and the rearview camera since I see one set of AV inputs.
URIRx98
the black box that i pulled out is the fm modulator and the reason the antenna is layin like that is cause it never really worked to well, so i didnt put it up. I got it as a temporary fix to see if it would work, which it didnt, and i was goin to get a amplified antenna but havent gotten around to it.

since the relay is in the front of the car, then the only thing those wires running to the back of the car can be are the video signals.

just follow my diagram; it should help you to understand what's going on better.

i placed my relay in the back of the car by the rear camera control unit, but since yours is in the front of the car, the only wires running to the back of the car is the video cables.

one should be the output from the rear camera and the other should be the input to the camera unit. the relay switches between the rear camera output and the dvd output. the video from one of these two signals should then be routed to the camera unit.

basically, if i understand your setup correctly, there should be a pair of video cables running towards the back of your car (perhaps there are 3 wires because he's using a common video ground). or perhaps these are shielded video cables and not single braided wires.

like i said before, the best way to find out is to tap into these wires and test for continuity with the video cable from your dvd player.

i wish i was there because it would make things SOOO much easier...

actually, do me a favor and take a picture of the relay and the wires connected to it. these wires (not the one for powering the e-magnet) should match the wires going to the back of the car.
URIRx98
well after loookiin again at the wires at the dvd player, im not sure if that black box is a relay or not. i followed some of the wires, and one of them is plugged into the dvd player at the 12v plug, and on the other end, is 2 wires twisted together, but there black and white, and it looks as if the fm modulator is also connected to it aswell as the tv antenna. the antenna looks as if it is connected in 2 ways, 1 directly into the box, and then it seems as if it has jumper wires connected. THe fm modulator has jumper wires connected to it aswell. Any clue now? Im gonna have to take my truck back to the instaler and have him check wires for video signals though.

it sounds like your dvd player has a tv tuner in it (not uncommon).

this is what should be connected to your dvd player / tuner:

1) power and ground
2) audio out to the modulator
3) video out to the relay
4) antenna for the tuner
5) also possibly remote IR receiver

if you could move some of those wires out of the way so i could have a better look at what is what, that would help me out a lot.

from the pics, it's difficult to tell how things are connected with all those wires in the way. i'm sure i can help you out; i just need better pictures.

the circuitry is rather simple and can be figured out. it's just very difficult without better pictures. also, you may not want to pay any attention to the colors of the wires because there's no way to know if the installer didn't just use whatever wire was available at the time.

ps - i'll be on vacation in france for the next 10 days so i won't be able to help you out during that time. sorry.

last but not least, hope these help you out. It looks as though whats plugged into the dvd player, is tuner, fm mod thru rcas, power plug, something to the relay, and cant really see what else the other wires go to.
