I am sure it can be done. People put aftermarket receivers in their MDX all the time. With a mounting kit.....Metra, or another brand, a Pioneer AVIC-N1 should bean easy install.

so if i bought that... i can install the avic n-1. but whould i have to take out my acura radio and cd changer?

It sure can be done but the question is, why would you want to NOT put it in the factory radio spot? If you put it where the trip computer is, you'll end up having 2 receivers. What's the point?
Also, once you take out the trip computer, you'll lose the capability to control a subset of the AC controls (AC on/off, directions etc). Are you sure you don't need those?

You may want to get an aftermarket portable unit instead.

Yes dude, the Pioneer unit you are talking about will replace your factory stereo. It is doubtful you will able to use you factory disc changer with the new aftermarket receiver. You are better off buying a 6 disc changer from Pioneer and putting it in the factory location.

You aren't going to try to do this installation your self are you?

Andy,
If you are asking if you could install the Avic N1, I would say No, you cannot. I make this harsh judgement by the questions you've asked up to this point.
It may very well be possible for a professional installer to install teh Avic, or a new receiver or other thing. That would depend on your budget and their expertise. Why not talk to a pro?

haha dont worry, i wasnt refering to myself installing it
im getting it done at tweeter

Instead of using the Pioneer AVIC-N1, why don't you wait a couple months and get the Alpine NVE-N872A Nav system with real time traffic!!. I'm suggesting this because Alpine has come out with a very innovative new product to be able to support AFTERMARKET mobile audio/video/navigation equipment without needing drastic surgery to your dash!! ......and this just uses your EXISTING AUDIO SYSTEM entirely. (see article posted below)

However, you will probably need an additional standalone monitor because if you remove your "monochrome" screen you will lose your climate control functionality (A/C, fan controls are integrated into this). You will need a good installer to fabricate a "housing" for your monitor.

.....there's just one more catch. This product needs a "third party manufactured" wiring harness adapter. Hopefully someone like METRA will come out with one for the MDX.

Here's the info on this product, the Alpine V-HUB (VPA-B211A)

ALPINE UNVEILS NEW AFTERMARKET SOLUTIONS FOR OEM INTEGRATION

New Products Preserve Factory Functionality and Appearance

TORRANCE, Calif., Jan. 6, 2005 – Alpine Electronics of America, Inc., the industry-leading manufacturer of high-performance mobile electronics, today announced new solutions to allow integration of aftermarket video, navigation and Ai-NET devices without altering factory functionality.

The new VPA-B211A Vehicle Hub (V-Hub) Interface Adapter now makes it possible to connect an array of Alpine audio and video equipment to existing Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) in-dash units. The KTX-100E JCI RailPort™ Module Package allows for Alpine’s rear-seat entertainment systems to be easily added into existing JCI RailPort overhead factory-installed systems.

“We know that it’s getting harder to add aftermarket products to today’s complex OEM systems, but we’ve created solutions for this dilemma,” said Stephen Witt, vice president, Brand Marketing, Alpine Electronics. “Our new V-Hub and JCI RailPort products make it possible to add on to or upgrade OEM systems with new technologies without compromising OEM function or aesthetics. This is a new opportunity to add aftermarket products into vehicles where this had previously not been possible.”

VPA-B211A

Alpine’s new VPA-B211A V-Hub Interface Adapter connects to the in-dash OEM video display. The VPA-B211A makes it possible for Ai-NET entertainment components to be added to the vehicle. With an additional third-party manufactured, vehicle-specific A/V adapter, the V-Hub makes it possible to use the Alpine graphical interface on factory radio displays and control Ai-NET systems with a remote control.

The VPA-B211A has an Ai-NET input, a dedicated navigation input and two auxiliary inputs. This opens up many doors for the addition of audio/video products, such as the KCA-420i Interface Adapter for iPod, which lets users search their iPod by playlist, artist, album or song name from the dash. The V-Hub also gives users the choice of adding either Sirius Satellite Radio or XM Satellite Radio service. Also, the V-Hub enables the addition of Alpine’s new NVE-N872A navigation system.

When it comes to rear-seat entertainment, the V-Hub makes it possible to have a complete touch-screen system. By installing the TME-M770 monitor in the rear seat, this 6.5-inch wide touch-screen display can control all the functions of the monitor through its touch panel. This lets the rear-seat passengers control their audio/video sources completely from the back seat. Additionally, with the VPE-S431 video switcher/expansion module, rear-seat passengers can enjoy two different entertainment sources on two different monitors. The VPA-B211A can also help in the set up of a multichannel sound system. By adding the PXA-H701 digital processor and RUX-C701 in-dash controller for the PXA-H701, a center channel speaker and subwoofer to the four front/rear speakers, a factory set up can be turned into a multichannel system.

Here's my post on the Alpine NVE-N872A, which BTW, is light years ahead of the Pioneer AVIC-N1
