Which Decade was best to grow up? - Click HERE for Original Thread

This is has been an item of discussion around my work. There is even an internet email working it's way talking about the subject.

Which was/is a better decade? Why? I think of being a "kid" as 6-17 years old.

Things to consider--health, safety, government, fun of growing up, technology, standard of living, family life, free time, etc. Whether you are in an urban or rural setting will probably affect your opinion.

I strongly suspect that each of us thinks ours was the best decade to grow up in. I've got great memories of my H/S and college years. That said, there's so much written about the 50's that there maybe those out there that agree that it was the BEST.

Burgers, Fries, and Cherry Pies
Lyric and Music by: Jason A. Wendtland
Sung by: Charley Pride

Chorus:
Burgers and fries and cherry pies, it was simple and good back then
Walking in the sand hand in hand never thinking that it could end
Making our love with the moon above at the drive-in picture show
And it was burgers and fries and cherry pies in a world we used to know

Changes come and go, we've had our share I know
Now it seems we don't have time for love anymore
All the things we used to say, little things we did each day
Oh I long to do the things that we did before, when it was...

Repeat Chorus

Well I'm still the same old me, that's all I'll ever be
I'd like to think that you're the same old you
We lost something down the line that I wish we both could find
Lord I'd like to do the things that we used to do, when it was...

Repeat Chorus

I agree that people will favor their decade. But if you got to choose which would be better? Would MP3's and Instant Messenger be important? What about color television? Or riding you bike across town to visit your friend when you were 11 years old? What about seeing major league players who were playing for fun instead of money and who would sign an autograph for free?

I know we love our internet, IM, wireless networks etc. It's a tough call.

I also think that a lot of folks will vote for the decade they grew up in. In addition, they have no perspective re: the decades prior to that time period, and cannot truly judge differences in growing up in those decades. I was a kid in the mid-50's to mid- 60's, and I voted for the 50's. I think those times were less hectic, less peer pressure, and good times could be had without spending any money to speak of.

I agree with Lance.

So, being 6 - 17 in the 1970's..... I remember it as a safe time for being a kid.
I was able to do a lot without my parents having to worry.
Today, I wouldn't let my kids go up the street to the store alone.

I lived in the big city then, and we still do now.
Seems bad things happen now, didn't back then, or was I too much of a kid to understand.

From a safety point of view, I like the 1970's.

It depends on what age you "grow up". I like to think of myself as growing older but not up!!:2:

I remember some peer pressure, watching "Leave it to Beaver":D

I was age 6-17 in the 60's and 70's and enjoyed my childhood. However I do recall the Vietnam war, race riots (at my High School), the draft, the Cold War, etc. Which decade is best truly is a tough (and very subjective) call.

I have 3 boys whose 6-17 years spanned the 80s (barely), 90s, and 00s - so I have first-hand perspective of childhoods in every decade from the 60s thru the 00s (I think that means I'm getting old). :1:

Dang, there ya go again -- having polls that don't cover all of the members!:3: We traflo's just don't have a chance. Our ages are above the top limit in "how old are you?" polls, and our favorite decade is earlier than the '50s. When you get there, you'll understand...:trustme:

80's here. . .

Commodore 64/Vic 20

Ronald Reagan
and Bon Jovi!

I look at it from a whole other perspective. Being African-American and growing up in the 80's was a very good time for us. Hearing some of the things that my parents had to go through when they were kids gives me enough foresight to understand how good it really was.

Sorry about that Frostya! Do you thinking growing up in the 40's was better than any other decade?

Overall I feel the 60's or maybe the 70's were best. They had the right combination of technology (air conditioning, color TV, telephones, etc), along with safety (not as much child abuse and molestation), standard of living had increased but didn't "seem" as busy. Fast food wasn't every corner, MTV didn't exist and kids played outside instead of in front of a video game or PC. Mom was normally at home and families tended to eat together a little more often.

Unless you had a relative in 'Nam.

You forget about "duck and cover" and fallout shelters? We used to think that the Russkies were coming over the pole any day, with their atom bombs.

My point? Time heals all wounds; Objects in the rear view mirror appear better than they were.

Probably the best decade was the one in which you were the most naive. We know too much at this point in our adult lives.
trixie
The 70's was all about sex, and drugs, and rock & roll. What more could a kid want?
trixie
Forgot one thing. The 70s introduced the modern skateboard wheel. Sex, drugs, rock & roll, and skateboards. That's what is was all about.

I remember that. Were we so stupid that we actually thought that ducking under a school desk would protect us from nuclear radiation? If only it was that easy.

Yeah, maybe -- WWII was started (as far as the US was concerned) and won, and it was fun watching the country coming back "alive" afterwards. New cars started to be made again, gas rationing stopped, and those stupid air-raid alerts didn't happen anymore. I guess I really enjoyed most the decade from '45 to '55. Met my girlfriend then, too, who married me in '61, and she's STILL my girlfriend (and you oughtta see her whip that MDX through the corners!):4:

I was born in 1960. The best about that gen, dispite JFK's sination/Hippies/drugs/beattles/Vietnam......
I had a great upbringing, great parents that were there for us, put us threw private schools and taught good morals and whats right from wrong, provided dicipline and taught us good manners. Kids/Parents lack that today big time !

Has to be the 2000's.

Good looking teachers are just more intimate than in the 50's when I was growing up.:2:

This is a toughie for me. The 50's were my earliest memories, they greatly influenced my life interests like music, sports, history, and changing world geography. The 60's were a mix for me, growing up in the UK at the beginning, lived through the rise of the Beatles, Stones, Kinks, the Who, etc. then graduated to some good 'ol American Rock and the Vietnam War at the end. Married in the 70's, had kids, college, etc. Man, I am old! What decade are we in now?
