that's the simple answer...
The complicated reasons include a) inheirently limited dynamic range of the RF link b) increbile lack of power in these types of units c) cheap speaker components married to goofty RF sets make value non-existant d) real questin of why you'd ever really want these etc etc etc
I'm not just being grumpy, the reality is these sound good on paper, but reality is a mess.
It would be nice if you could plug some "base station" into your hi-fi/home-theater and magically send great sound to another room, no arguement there.
The problem is that the base station takes some analog signal from a source, whether it is from a high quality tuner, a CD, a DVD, whatever then it has to transmit that over a really low power poorly dseigned RF signal that has barely enough dynamic range for a baby monitor. The signal has to compete with baby monitors, cordless phones, walkie talkies, ductwork, fluorescent light ... It gets picked up by an even crummier reciever. It gets amplified by a maybe 4 watts of real power dont let the claims of 15 watts fool you do the math on the power supply), run from batteries or some cheasy DC wall wart of a transformer. It goes through a crossover made with 28 cents of compenets and flows through cones thaat no boom box would be equipped with... AND you still CAN"T change the main prgram without running back.
I mean if you have to have 'music' in another room what is so bad about getting a boombox or a Cambridge Audio table radio with CD that will cost about the same as a wireless and sound a 1000x better. |

| Thanks renov8r for saving me some $. I'll just hide the wiring in the drop down ceiling. Didn't know the quality of sound was so poor. |

If you do have a wireless dsl or something like that already, you might want to try a "Apple Air Port Express" which let you play the songs wirelessly..
I am not sure if you need a Mac to play the song or not.. but iTuens is free for both PC and Mac.

Nice suggestion, http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/airtunes.html
That is really more of a low-cost solution to sharing the iPod/iTunes content around the house- Ithink if competes with folks who thought a Roku system would be supplement their iPod, and Apple doesn't wnat to lose them.
You'd still need powered speakers or a hi-fi.
And just to be clear, in LL's case he want's this in his basement, as I tried to point out, there are chaeper & better ways than with RF speakers. |
