How many TRANMISSION PROBLEMS - Click HERE for Original Thread

Just did a quick check on the number of "active" members of this website. There are about 650 members with 50 or more postings. While not a great statistical sample, maybe we can get an idea of the extent of the transmission problems.

To make this simple let's just take the pre-'03 transmissions and the '03 and latter ones.

We're talking about any type of NON-scheduled tranmission maintainance problem.

Lance, you may also be interested in these much older polls:

Also, the choices for pre-2003 tranny's need to be edited to reflect your intent. I think your 'more than 1 problem' selections are unclear as well.

Not yet, knock on Plood.

To clarify what robrecht is saying here, the first two selections should read "01 to 02" so there is no overlap in the poll.

Problem is, this site attracts people who are totaly freaked out because their transmission failed. Add to that, this is a relatively expensive vehicle, so owners are more likely to use a computer.

As a result, this site will get a very high percentage of the entire MDX universe that has had tranny problems. If there are 400,000 MDX's, and 1/2% had a tranny fail, that would be 2,000 failed tranny's . I bet many of them immediately googled "MDX transmission" and came here to express thier displeasure.

Transmission is still transmitting.

Darn your right, I should have chosen the 2nd of the 2. Can I revote :(

2003 no transmission problem

Actually, a poll that stated:
01-02 MDX: 0 problems
01-02 MDX: 1 problem
01-02 MDX: 2 + problems
03 MDX: 0 problems
03 MDX: 1 problem
03 MDX: 2 + problems
04-05 MDX: 0 problems
04-05 MDX: 1 problem
04-05 MDX: 2 + problems

The above would be more simple, and would separate
the 01-02 problem trans. from the new 03' trans model, and the 03' model (older) would be separated from the newer 04-05 years with less miles?

Let's take a poll on how to design the poll. :7:

Must have been to early in the AM. You folks are right about the list it should have read 01 to 02, etc. However, I can't find a way to change how the poll itself reads. Maybe one of the moderators would change it for me. Thanks, it advance.

It should be noted that in a poll run in early '02 there was 11.5% of the owners reporting problems.

Interesting; several things working here, like the age and miles on the '01's and '02's, but still a 35% failure rate!

Sure would be nice to get a large sample here.

No problems here. :headshake

This forum is hardly representative of all owners. A larger proportion of problems would show up here. And try to get everybody together for a poll!! Good luck!

You're right, the sample here is skewed, unfortunately it's all we've got to work with, and at least it gives us a feel for the problem. I haven't checked out other brands sites, but, it does seem strange that our sight has a forum just for tranny problems.
Sinecure
I have the '01. I had to get a new tranny, but it wasn't the recall problem. Mine was a whistling noise at 60mph as described elsewhere on this site. Acura paid for the tranny, I had to pay $1000 for labor.

Hey Everyone,
Old timer here. Have had my '01 since August 2001. The transmission started making a puslating noises, took it in last year and they said there was no problem. I bought the warratny last year at 50,000 miles. Last week, while driving, the transmission severely slipped around 3000 RPM in second gear - the clutch wouldn't engage at all. Took it in, they're replacing the transmission.
73,000 miles.

A poll cannot accurately reflect this data:

'01 Touring/Navi - tranny died apprx 70k (cousin's)
'02 Touring/Navi - tranny replaced apprx 45k (friend's)
'02 Touring - no tranny issues apprx 45k+ (Mine . . .)

Batting 2 out of 3, NOT good for AHMC or the '01-02 MDX . . .
Dr. Ken
I don't think that this poll means what it was intended as one would expect that older cars would naturally have more problems than newer cars. Therefore, the results are already known before any votes were taken.

I have an '01 MDX with 135K on it, which might seem like alot on the surface, however, it is SoCal and mostly all freeway miles. In fact, proof being that I still have not yet had to have the brakes done and have plenty of tread left on only my 2nd set of tires. Had the "recall fix" done at 103K miles and am now being told I need a new trans, but the issue is not related to the recall, "it's the clutch package". Give me a break, the trans behavior is related to heat build-up and doesn't occur when the vehicle is cold. This is a faulty design issue and Acura's band-aid didn't cure the problem. I am very disappointed that I paid extra to obtain this vehicle over a US made vehicle and now have to pay even more for a problem I wouldn't expect on a US vehicle with 135K of easy driving.

'03 with 28k and no problems. Crossing my fingers and hoping that the '03 trannyies set a mark in durability
