It has been suggested to me to put a rear deflector on my new MDX in order to keep the back windshield clean and reduce the onset of rust at the back hinges.
Also, side mouldings has been also suggested.
Opinions/suggestions?

If the deflector or spoiler decrease dirt it is minimal. I think they are more of an aesthetic issue to me. I think they make the MDX look better.
The side mouldings do provide a benenfit and definitely help avoid door dings. But then again some people don't like the looks. But in the end they still look better than a big door ding. |

| Based on my experience (having a rear deflector) I would say that it is purely an appearance item. Even with it, my rear window is rarely clean. |

They must have a problem with the deflector design. Years ago I used deflectors on station wagons and they definitely worked. In those days we did not have wipers to keep the glass cleaned.

IMO, the deflector or the spoiler (which I have) don't really help in keeping the rear window clean. I got the spoiler mainly for aesthetic reasons.
On the BSMs, it could help protect your doors from dings but it certainly won't keep your doors 100% free from dings. |

| I've noticed the deflector helps keep my rear window cleaner than without. It helps to Rain-X the rear window and have a good amount of rain like up here in the Northwest to rinse off the dust. |

The color matched rear spoiler is much nicer looking than the black deflector in my opinion and I do believe that the wide BMS does help and looks good.
Another great accessory is the moonroof deflector... |

I agree with what everyone has said. The rear spoiler looks great but does little if nothing to keep the rear window clean but BSM are a must to help prevent dings plus they look great too.
Good luck in your decision |

If you drive in snow a fair amount, the spoiler does help keep some of the smut off your rear window. It only pushes it further down the back gate, but that's what you want - you can see better out the rear. Its not perfect by any stretch, but its better than not having it.
I added BSMs when they came out and I like having them. Although they don't seem to hold their paint very well. |

I too have been thinking about adding a spoiler.
Has any one noticed any additional whistling sounds or other untoward aerodynamic effects?
How easy are these to mount yourself? |

I have both...
I got the rear deflector because the MDX looks odd without it. I ordered BSM but the dealer screwed up and did not have them on at delivery. Since I live in NY and too delivery in December, I waited until April to have th BSM put on due to temperatures.
I didn't think the BSM made I big difference but I very happy they're on now.
Not sure what color your X is, mine is Desert Rock Metallic and BSM looks great.
