I'm about to embark on a kitchen remodel and need to make decisions on appliances before proceeding with the final design. I'd appreciate comments, opinions and experieces with the brands I'm considering.

Rangetop. I want a 36" wide gas with 4 burners and a grill. Have decided to go with Viking after considering Wolf, Thermador, DCS and Kitchenaid.

Refrigerator: 36" wide built-in with freezer on bottom. Leaning toward Kitchenaid and considering Viking. Thermador is made by Kitchenaid.

Dishwasher: Kitchenaid, Bosch and Asko or Viking. Viking's is made by Asko.

Wall ovens. Preference is 30" wide double oven, each full size with convection and microwave capability in one. Thermador has a model that fits the bill and highly rated but very expensive.

Winecooler. Space will limit me to a 24 inch undercounter. Sub-Zero has the only model that has dual temperature zones for reds on top and whites on bottom. Other models being considered include U-Line but these have "separate" cooling by relying on principal that hot air rises and cool air falls. What do wine experts thing about wine coolers? At this point I'm ambivalent about their utility.

Cabinets. Going with Downsview Kitchens made in Ontario, Canada

Thanks for any comments, especially from those who have used the above manufacturers.

One of those manufacturers was a client of mine. Some of their stuff I'd recommend, some I wouldn't.

Range: Viking or Thermador. DCS is not as good as the V or T, IMO. If you get the Viking, just make sure you get a good Viking authorized dealer/distributor to install it rather than having the general contractor do it; they're a bit testy if not well-installed. Or at least they were a few years ago (this was the biggest source of complaints to Viking. ahem.). IMO this is really a design/engineering issue that Viking blamed on the installers (it shouldn't be rocket science!), and they may have fixed that since then.

Fridge: I'd add SubZero to that list; don't know who makes the Viking.

Dishwasher: Bosch.

Wall Oven: Thermador convection

I'm a fan of "staying in the family" and would probably opt for a Thermador kitchen (given the options you've outlined) , except for the dishwasher and possibly the fridge (if you're going to have the fascia the same as the cabinets it doesn't matter). From a styling perspective it'll probably look best to stay within a single brand to the extent that's possible.

JMUO (just my unprofessional opinion)

Sounds like it's gonna be a nice (and expensive!) kitchen. Be sure and post some pics when you're through!

The only item on your list I have personal experience with is the Kitchenaid Dishwasher. We have the model with the stainless interior and extra tall space between baskets. That extra space is really nice when we want to wash something extra large. The SS interior also is good for easy cleaning.

I wanted to go to gas cooktop when we remodeled but my wife does not like gas. So, cannot comment on that.

Have never looked at freezer on bottom refridgerators. Can you still get an ice despenser in the door with this model?

Worm and G. Colton:

Thanks for your responses. After additional research and demos I'm now going with Sub-Zero on the refrigerator and wine cooler, Wolf on the rangetop with 4 burners and grill and ventilation and Miele for the dishwasher, wall oven and steam oven.
