Nav DVD update 3.40c review - Click HERE for Original Thread

As suggested in another thread, I'm starting the review of 3.40c Nav DVD update.

I received mine today, old version is 3.30g. 2004 MDX.
Here is my impression as to what is said about this version on the DVD update site by alpine.

1. They say "Nationwide City Rural Coverage".
I live in a rural city and find the coverage to be no different than
3.30g. It is still an unverified area and the new expressway (completed 2 years ago is not on either version).

2. They say "New Improved Shopping Category"
I see no difference in the shopping menu's compared to 3.30g

3. They say "4 million New Points of Interest"
I can't prove that this isn't true but I can tell you that I looked at
both DVD's on my computer. There are about 20 files on each totaling about 6.5gb. Only three files are of significant size.
The .poi file (which I'm guessing is points of interest file) is 1.2gb in size on ver 3.30g and 1.4 gb on 3.40c. I don't think you can fit "4 million new points of interest" on .2gb additional space when it takes 1.2gb for the original 7.5 million points of interest.
The other two files .str and .bas are very similiar in size at
1.4gb and 3.0gb on both versions.

I'm dissapointed to have paid $185.00 for an upgrade that has so
little difference if any and am going to return it for a refund unless someone else that has looked at these two versions can tell me where I'm wrong!!!!!
This version may be a good deal for 2003 owners but not for 2004
owners.

Thanks for the update. Based on your description, I think that I will wait a year for the next version before upgrading.

I have an '04 as well, and frankly am not planning to buy a DVD update any time soon.

I don't think the intent of the updates was to pay for updates every year ($185 a year!).

I recently bought this upgrade for my 03 MDX. Frankly, I don't find it any better than the previous version that came with the vehicle. A complete waste of money

At least one good thing about these DVD updates from Alpine is that you can return them, leaving you with just the shipping charges. If it were not the case, $185 for insignificant upgrades is kinda hard to swallow.

Rats, I was hoping for some more features. I also have the 2004 and I was hoping for some more upgrades including maybe the restaurant reviews. Did I mention I love to eat? Oh well I guess I am with the rest of you and will wait this year out.

Thanx for the review. Wonder if the NAV system can read an archival i.e. "backup" DVD-/+R copy?

In a few months I will be moving to Germany and taking my 01 MDX. I have tried to find if I will be able to use the NAV system there, so far it does not semm that I can get disks from the US supplier. Anyone have any suggestions.

Can this update be used on a 2002 Navagation?

I own a 2004 MDX. I live on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia in Canada. The nearest towns are Gibsons and Sechelt. According to NAVTEQ, a new version of the DVD has the Sunshine Coast info on it (which the DVD that came with my 2004 MDX doesn't). My question is this: Could anyone with access to the new Version 3.40C DVD please tell me if Gibsons and Sechelt roads, etc. are on this new DVD? Thanks. I appreciate it because I don't want to buy the upgrade if they aren't.

I have a 2003 with Nav version 3.2

The date of this data looks like its from 09-2002.

I assume 3.4 is data from 2004?

In any case will I be happy with a 3.2 to 3.4 upgrade?

Worth $185.00???

I use the Nav for my Job and the 3.2 doesn't even have a section of HWY 880 in Oakland CA on it.

Buy it and return it if it isn't what you want.
They have a 30 day money back guarantee

$185? It's $280 on the Acura.ca site. There's no way I'm paying $300 for a DVD.....I'll wait and buy one every 2-3 years.

Does anyone know if copying the DVD to a DVD Recordable works. That way at least you can keep a copy of it before you return it?
