Custom Dual Exhaust for my 02 MDX ! - Click HERE for Original Thread

This is the step 1 of 2 to free up the exhaust and add some nice tones.
This is a "resonator-back" custom system with custom Y-pipe
(2 1/4 inch) and two Remus mufflers. The stock resonator and Cat
are kept for the time being.

To really free up the whole exhaust system, in the next step I would
need to go with hi-flow Cat and resonator, with 2.5 inch pipe for those compartment.

The result now is a deeper and louder exhaust tone especially in the 2k-3k rpm range. Bottom end response is better.

I did a few 0-60 runs and average about 7.4 sec. It's about 0.3 secs faster than before. Not too bad with this modification :)

(The runs were done with pedal floored all the way and manually shifed from 1-2)

Nice! How much did that set you back if you don't me asking. And are you running a less restricted intake also?

Nice Northern. Me like!! :29:

Thanks guys.

It set me back about $500, mostly in labour cost of making the custom Y-pipe.

Dale, yes I am running the "Northern" intake system with K&N. :4:

Sweet, how do they sound?

Sounds sweet, too.
Deep and smooth. It is louder than stock
so my wife would have to get used to it ;)

Northern_MDX,

Very nice to give your wife time to get used to your new exhaust. BTW, can you post some pics of the pipes themselves?:4:

Very nice!!! I'm itchin' to do the same. The '04 dual exhaust looks cool but still whimsy cause you can see how small the actual exhaust opening is. You said $500 for everything but would you mind sharing the cost of the mufflers alone?

Thanks!

EXCALIBUR:

It's all about taking it one step at a time, once she is ok with the current exhaust sound, I will move up one notch :D

By the time I go home it may be pretty dark, I will try to take some
shots and post here.

MDXtacy:

I paid $200 for the mufflers. To be honest with you two dual openings is an overkill for MDX. I went for it more for the look.
The real gem here is the larger pipe (2 1/4) from the resonator to the mufflers.

My next step will be to open up the resonator and CAT and the rest of pipes, since that part is still "restrictive".

I may even ditch the Y-pipe and go with the real dual exhaust from the exhaust manifold (2 CAT, 2 resonators, 2 mufflers) in the near future.

I am hoping to experiment with different designs and don't mind to be the guinea pig here :4:

If you decide to go for a real dual exhaust system then you misht also look for someone who can do the tuning calculaions for you. Properly sized pipes can help free the exhaust, but the real improvements are provided by tuning.,

Man I want that set up too.

Northern_MDX,
I like it too!!! Great price on the Remus stuff there. Looks great too!!

In the past few months, I checked around and two stores here wanted between $600 to 700 (installed) for some basic Dynaflow or was it Magnaflow stuff. Another store else wanted $900+ for some stainless steel stuff (usually it's mild steel or aluminized). Anyways it's all confusing enough which is why I haven't installed any. Other than that, they cannot do a mandrel bend and have to patch stuff together (well, it's custom). Prices here are reasonable because some off-the-shelf exhausts for other vehicles already cost more than that but they've got stuff that we can't have with custom ones. However now that you've got it for $500, all their prices aren't reasonable any more! The mandrel bend is something I like but the MDX is not exactly a turbo Z - so even not having this should be ok. Last I was looking at some HKS stuff (large canister type - supposed to be quieter, but we know they'll all be a louder than stock anyways)...

Looking good Northern. Have you found any headers for the X?
Northern_MDX
G. COLTON:

Totally agreed. Improper tuning may even decrease the performance. I would like to, if possible, do some testings when I mess with the centre pipe, resonator and CAT.

mdxx3:
My pipes are not stainless steel either. SS are too expensive and hard to work with such custome work. Mine are not truely mandrel bent either. Nevertheless, I think they serve the purpose well.

kimsta: I am not aware of any aftermarket header for X. Given the cost of a custom header, maybe a forced induction system is a better bang for the buck.

That's an awesome price for Remus mufflers. Where did you get them from? I know they're a bit overboard but I'm also interested in the look....and Remus is a very reputable manufacturer of high end exhausts.

Here's the picture you were looking for.

Northern_MDX,

Looks like a professional job. Thanks for sharing.:29:
