Thule Mountaineer Carrier Success Anyone? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Has anyone out there successfully attached a Thule Mountaineer carrier box to the MDX using the factory roof rack? I was wondering if this was possible/difficult. Thule told me that all I would need to do was drill two extra holes in the base of the carrier. I just wanted to see if anyone had been through this yet. How about other Thule carriers? Any ideas/help/suggestions would be appreciated.
You might want to search. This has come up at least a dozen times.

Here are a few links. Try a search for more.

Short answer: Yes you can, there are several different ways- depending on your mechanical abilities and preferences.

yeah, i did a pretty thorough search before posting. i came up with nothing. i was specifically interested in the thule mountaineer carrier. if i get things to work, i'll make sure to document my results.
I successfully modified our Thule Classic cargo box to fit the MDX crossbar spacing. It does require drilling two additional holes about 5 cm beyond the series of holes that are predrilled. It is essentially a trivial modification.

From what I could see on the Thule website, the Mountaineer box's clamps are similar or identical to the Classic's. The internal structures appear different (mounts for skis are in the Classic).

In addition to the acuramdx.org threads, I think there was a thread on Edmund's TownHall that also described this.

well, i placed the mountaineer box on top of the mdx factory rack and it does indeed seem to fit ok if i drill 2 more holes. the question that remains for me is where do i drill the holes? i could either drill them in the rear of the carrier or in the front. if i drill them in the front of the carrier then the back hatch won't come up all of the way - it bumps into the rear of the carrier. if i drill the holes in the rear of the carrier i might be able to open the hatch all of the way but the carrier seems to be hanging a little too much out front. my guess is that i should drill the holes in the front of the carrier - it is a 5/16" hole. i'll call thule tomorrow to verify my findings and post results here.
Special Field Agent; Mountaineer Box Assignment:

Hey, does the curve of the cross bars affect the mounting? How are you holding on to the factory cross bars? If you're using the Thule custom hardware (sq head bolts) what are you using to reinforce on the box?

Over and out.
