For the L/C/R and rears there are so many options. I suggest you check out the B&W 601 and LCR60 combo.
For the sub, the best bang for the buck is http://www.svsubwoofers.com/ . |

| What are you using to power the speakers? What size room? Are you primarily using the system for music or theater? All of these are important factors in speaker choice. The B&W's are very good speakers, but there may be better options depending on your setup and needs. Just remember, balance is the key. |

I am not an audio expert, so I can only share my personal experience. I went with the Velodyne SPL 800 S2 subwoofer. Big power in a very compact design priced at about $1200. Velodyne only make subwoofers.
Inwall speakers are a compromize. That said, I limited useage to ceiling mounted rears. I choose the Polk Audio RC80i. For right, left and center, I chose the Monitor Audio Silver Series S10 and SLCR.
My home theater doubles as a family room. The adjointing kitchen area makes for an overall viewing area of about 20' x 40'. Music listening is also important, so I went with the Denon 3805 receiver that features SACD and DVD Audio. Let me tell you, the remastered 5 channel Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon is incredible, even without the drugs that made the old-school 2 channel version a hit.
I'm very pleased with my new system and can recommend the hardware. My only regret, limited by a built-in entertainment wall, I could only fit a 42" TV. I have a whole bunch of sound for such a small screen size. |

| trixie it looks like we have the same amount of space....Im not an audio person but I got a Denon AVR something cost me a bit...but oh well...as for the in wall speakers what are the cons of having them.... |

It’s that big solid box behind the speaker that gives the speaker much of its character. In-wall speakers project perpendicular to their mounting plane--they are hard to aim. In wall speakers typically mount their tweeters inside of the main cone, which blocks sound. Speaker makers, knowing the shortcomings of wall mounts, save their good stuff for traditional speakers.
That said, there are some kick butt in-wall speakers on the market. For all but the most serious audiophiles, the shortcomings of in-wall speakers are livable. I am very happy with mine. |

Just a note to anyone considering Def Tech, they are now owned by DEI, the same company that IMHO ruined Orion and PPI. I don't know if they have changed the line yet, but it could be coming. |

| I second the opinion on SVS Subs. I have one of their power subs and it rocks. The disadvantage is the size of the sub because it is tall whereas the the more conventional box subs seems smaller. However, that's only visual because the placement of the sub is very important for both types (space away from wall, furniture and etc.) and just b/c a sub is a box doesn't mean you should put stuff on it! Anyway, SVS is awesome and you should look at www.hometheaterforum.com for more discussion on audio stuff. |

There are several SVS box subs available now. But I prefer the cylinder style because of the smaller footprint. But some folks may be turned off with the "black water heater" look. :) |

Another excellent subwoofer for the price is the Outlaw Audio LFM-1, it's a new product from last year and has won a number of awards. I've had one for about 6 months now; it's pretty stunning (sometimes literally, like in the Fish Tank tap in Finding Nemo).
It runs $579, compares well with those in the 1K+ range. YOu can get 2 for $999 if you're obsessive.

I agree with above comments on in-wall speakers - it costs too much to make them work well. I've been looking at the Monitor Audio Silver line for mains & centers - not obtrusive and high quality sound.
My $0.02... |

I have been pleased with my in-wall speakers from NILES (L/C/R and RR/LR and sub are all NILES).
Works great with a SONY PFM 50" Plasma and SONY ES system.
Grilles paint nicely (spray) and blend right into the wall.
Good Luck. |

| well, idesigned and built a home theater in my home over 2 years ago. I use polf audio tower speakers for the front speakers and polk audio di-plex speakers for the sides and rear speakers. My subwoofer also is Polk Audio. ALL of the speakers produce great sound with no distortion whatsoever. I have been thouroughly satisfied with their performance and the subwoofer would be under $500, however the tower speakers and the 4 sides and rear speakers would probably come to between $1000 and $1500 depending on where you purchased them. Here are pics of my home theater if you have any questions I'm more than happy to assist you. |

Are those side speakers dipoles? If not, do the people in the second row hear them?
[EDIT] never mind. di-plex, dipole - same thing!
I noticed the red Milliken Stargate pattern carpet. Good choice. :4: |

Check this site out. Great in wall speakers at a great price. I have them in my family room (7.1) and they are sweet...(Level 3s are awesome). I paid a lot more for my Polks in my Theater Room which are tremendous (400watt 12" sub). Got with HTD for the "Bang for the Buck"

I`ve always liked Paradigm speakers....they are warm sounding, attractive if using cabinet styles, as well as they make in wall speakers which are quite good as well. They have awesome powered subs, and varying lines of matched sets depending on your budget...all lines sound great and use similar components...they have received very good reviews over the years as well....quite efficient also which means amp doesn`t have to work quite as hard...also they have impressed me with being good for music also...(almost every speaker sounds great for movies, but the true test is for music listening)
A couple of years back, I was in a stereo shop, in one of those mock home theatre rooms, and I asked to have a $1000 (not incl. sub) set of paradigms compared to a $12,000 set .....I truly liked the sound of the paradigms better, warmer and more natural sounding, these were the "reference" series. Just food for thought....FYI-if you don`t need to go in wall...don`t...they might work for fill or even surround speakers, but you can`t beat a proper cabinet designed to go with the drivers....I built a false wall, and used cabinet speakers in behind....all you see is the grille, yet the cabinet is in behind the wall...very uncluttered look.
Remember, you don`t need to go big , if using a powered sub, the ones I mentioned above were just about a 14" tall, with a 6" woofer and a tweeter...more like a bookshelf speaker, but sounded very good when used with sub. |
