Hello, I'm a first time Acura owner. I leased an '05 MDX with Nav 3 weeks ago. I'm a bit upset that my city mileage is 10.0 MPG. Has anyone experienced this? Could it possibly be normal, and should I anticipate better after a break-in? period?

Your comments will be appreciated

Driving conditions/sytle vary a great deal in "city".

In true-bumpre-to-bumper gridlock 10 MPG might be as good as it gets.

Idling KILLS MPG!

Similarly if you mean by "city" someplace wheere by law or congestion the max speed is maybe 35 MPH, you have s stoplight every 4-5 blocks, people makin left turns so it takes five minutes to go five blocks et cetera than the ONLY vehicle that won't suffer horrible MPG is a hybrid that shuts off the motor...

OTOH if your "city loop" includes plenty of time on controlled access boulevardes and 45+ MPH and few lights than 10 MPG is way too low...

Give more details, we can help sort this out!

Good Points! I live in New York City, (Queens, outlying borough), so clearly there are lots of stop lights, traffic. I am doing abit more than normal idlying setting up and playing around with all of the "toys". However I ran a tank into PA last weekend, about 250 miles total, mostly freeway traffic and averaged 15.5mpg's. I called Acura headquarters and was told that I need the car to breakin and not to judge the mileage until the first service @5,000. I only put on about 6,000 per year! My dealership did say that there could be something wrong and I will bring it to them next week. I posted my problem so as to determine of others have experienced similar performance as a reference to my "argument" with the dealer.

Most likely nothing is wrong. Sounds pretty normal as your X does need to break in but your type of driving is not going to get you very high mileage.

Our X now has 5000 miles on it and we are getting about 16.5 MPG combined city'highway (mostly city) driving

I only have 650 miles on my X and I'm also getting about 11-12 per gal. Have not had any highway driving yet, only stop and go. I'm going to drive to Fla. next week, so I'm sure it will be alot better than now.

About 1600 miles on mine and with mostly city driving, I get about 14.5 mpg.

Was that the "whole trip" including the time you spent at 70+ and the time you spent getting to the "open road"?

On cruise at 65 with no other efforts most broken-in MDXs will have MPG well into the 20s.

THe MDX is big. The motor is high output. It uses quite a bit of gasoline...

The break-in may hurt MPG by 10% or so.

...my X averages 17 mpg, which includes a good portion of freeway driving - albeit at varying speeds - from stop-and-go to 80 mph. :roadtrip:

My 03 definitely got worse mileage when new. Mixed local/highway driving averaged 13 MPG.

That same driving after 6 months jumped to, and stayed at around 16 MPG. Constant 75-80 MPH highway driving approaches 20 MPG. My all time high was 23 on a 200 mile, 60-65 MPH trip.

Local South Florida Driving Conditions:

1. No hills
2. Highway driving includes our share of rush hour "bumper to bumper" traffic
3. The A/C is never off

My 05 arrives on 3/1/05, so here I go again.

How hard do you stomp the gas when getting off the line? My wife has a tendency to hit the gas pedal very hard from stops. It's a habit she's developed from driving a less powerful car. So she gets about 11-13 mpg in her city driving.

When I drive, I'm a little more patient and relaxed on the gas pedal and get about 16-17 mpg in city driving.

I still only have 3k on the X so I'm hoping mileage gets better all around.

I too was getting about 11-13 mpg until I switched to Shell 93 octane. Since then I've been getting about 16-18 mpg. I was using Mobile's 93 before the switch. Worth a try.

My 04 MDX had a 17.0 mpg in very cold weather and now has 18.0 mpg in all local driving. I use regular gas.

I'm curious if this has to do with Shell 93 being one of the top tier gasolines approved by Honda, BMW, Toyota, and GM? The top tier gasolines are supposed to be superior at cleaning intake deposits out of your engine even if it has a build up already established and will prevent new deposits from forming.

The top tier gas information is at: http://www.toptiergas.com/

The retailers that have been approved as top tier gasoline suppliers are:
QuikTrip
Chevron
Conoco
Phillips
76
Shell
Entec Stations

Shell calls it V-Power and I believe it is only in the 93 octane blend. Chevron has it in all their blends and they call it Techron. I'm not familiar with the other brands.

I'm not sure if it has anything to do with it or not, but I have noticed a significant change in mpg since switching Shell's V power 93. Even just around town it has improved.

After reading more detail at the top tier site, all of the gasoline grades that an approved retailer sells have to meet the standards.

Shell says that their 93 octane grade does have more additives than their other grades, but apparently, the lesser grades have met the standards too.
