Opinions on the rear deflector/spoiler - Click HERE for Original Thread

I recently got my rear wind deflector/spoiler......and I'm having second thoughts about installing it. I think the back looks fine without it......do you guys think it'll make my X look even better than it already does.....or is it overkill.

Maybe I haven't seen any with it in a while and I've forgotten the reason I ordered it? Opinions and photos are welcome.

My prior cars, 92 and 98 Accords and present TL have the spoiler on the trunk lid. IMHO, these cars needed some jazzing up at the rear end and looked much better with same. However I do not think the rear spoiler is needed as the back end looks great without it, on the X. To me its too much on the X. However you will find many on this board who have it and love it. So in short, it's a personal thing.

I think that the MDX spoiler is strictly for looks. A friend got one for his '05 and stated that it was his wife's vanity thing. It doesn't seem to have much function for anything else, except to perhaps keep some of the rain off the back window.
Maik
This has been discussed many times before. It serves no useful purpose at all. It is strictly an appearance thing.

Did you get the deflector or the spoiler? They are not the same. I have the deflector and I think it makes the MDX looks sportier. But I think the spoiler actually looks better and wished I had gotten that instead. Either way, I'm very happy that I got the deflector over leaving it stock...IMO.

Agreed. It makes it look less mini van'ish.

True....I didn't think of it that way.
pisay87
With or without...it's very subjective. If I didn't have a spoiler, I think my X would look naked from the rear. :D

pisay87,

Q: Is a naked rear necessarily a bad thing?
pisay87
EXCALIBUR, it depends whose rear. :19: Again, very subjective. :D

pisay87,

You are correct sir.:7:

I have the spoiler on my '05 and do like and prefer the appearance of the x w/ the spoiler.

Having said that, this design spoiler seems to offer ZERO effectiveness for dust deflection...I had assumed, and hoped, that there would be (say) a 20-40% degradation of TRUE DUST DEFLECTION efficiency from the deflector (specifically designed to bring the wind down to keep dust from roiling back up onto the window) to the spolier...and am really disappointed to see Honda could not bring SOME nominal dust deflection efficiency design into the spoiler.

Having owned several Nissan pathfinders with the deflector over the years, and then several suburbans more recently, none with deflector, I swore I would never get a SUV without a deflector...but let my guard down when I chose the "X" spoiler over the deflector. From this perspective, then, I blew it.

Bottom line - if appearance is important and you don't have to drive down dusty roads too often (especially after a killer detail job and the "X" looks fine)....then the spoiler wins the debate IMO. BUT - don't count on much if any dust deflection...I've seen dust build up on the way back from the car wash. :(

Disgustingly poor design and not what I would have expected from honda. I still can't figure out why these two functions (appearance of the spoiler and the functionaility of the dust deflector) can't be integrated into one accessory.

From your comments, it seems like you think the deflector would do a better job of dust deflection than the spoiler. I have the deflector and I don't think it does much of anything either. There have been other threads debating the efficiencies between deflectors and spoilers and I think the consensus have been that neither work very well. Both are really just for looks.

My cure for constant dust build up is the California Duster....

I still considering a deflector, but I have an issue with drilling my X! And the issue is not drilling itself, but the possibility of rust after a few years. I don't use garage and with Chicago's climate I think I have a good chance of getting drilled area rusty even if I cover holes up with some paint.... Any thoughts about that?

If you're that worried about it, I would touch it up with paint. Then when the paint dried, use RTV in the holes to help protect the area from moisture. This what I would do if I installed a spoiler on my X.

ps. How 'bout some good pictures of deflectors and spoilers? I personally think the spoiler looks better, and as far as functionality...it doesn't matter to me. I wash my X all the time!
IntaminFan628
i think they look good on the car, but 90% of the spoilers on cars are useless.
either, they aren't relaly engineered to push down on the back, or the car doesn't go fast enough of have the mechanics to need the spoiler. the only cars that might need them are the ones that they come standard in like the porsches. a real spoiler is a dragster one...

I had the same concern even though I don't live in climates like Chicago so I had a custom shop mounted my deflector using automotive glue. No drilling and no problems. You should consider that option.

I agree with several other posters that deflector/spoiler on the MDX does not serve any functional purpose, it is strictly for looks. I myself prefer a clean look without the deflector.

One additional thing to consider if you plan on carrying things on your roof rack (like skis, roof box, etc.) is the fact that the deflector may interfere with your load when you try to open the rear hatch.
closetobuying05
MDXTacy,
what I meant to say was this:
A) I chose the spoiler over the deflector, preferring the styling of the spoiler. KNEW I would give up *some* dust deflection, but never guessed the spoiler is essentally useless in terms of managing dust build-up.

B) I assumed the dust deflector (less expensive) was surely functional on the x for the purpose for which it was designed. I am surprised to get the sense in this thread that even the "dust deflector", per se, is not so efficient.

On even domestic SUVs (suburban, ahoe, etc)...I've always assumed a dust deflector does a decent job...deflecting dust. Why should it not ?

Why the two accessories can't be combined into one...is strange...except that Acura has clearly created two price points for these two devices...hundreds apart...so they must think we consumers won't notice the spoiler is a worthless dust deflector. Appearance only goes so far. If I had it to do again...dunno. Good news is I found the spoilers new on eBay at a price that made the dollar difference no big deal between the spoiler or dust deflector.
CTPYHA
Now I'm lost... I'm aware of two items: tailgate spoiler and tailgate deflector. Both are the same price - $297 from Tim. Most agree that both items are almost useless, but do make your X look "cooler". Now, where did we come up with "dust deflector"? What is it, and how come it's so much cheaper, then spoiler?

I guess clarification is in order. I believe there are only two accesories offered from the factory to be mounted on top of the rear hatch:
1) The Tailgate Spoiler (Spoiler): http://www.hondacuraworld.com/Merch...egory_Code=AMDX
2) The Rear Tailgate Deflector (Deflector): http://www.hondacuraworld.com/Merch...egory_Code=AMDX

When Closetobuying05 said dust deflector, he was referring to item two above because the main function of the Deflector is to channel dust away from the back window.

Closetobuying05, I understand what you're saying. To be fair, since I had the Deflector installed right when I got my MDX, I couldn't rightly say that it doesn't do it's job since I never compared the dust build-up before and after the installation. On that same line, I shouldn't say that it does or does not do a better job than the Spoiler since I've never had a Spoiler :D . I guess what I was trying to say is that I still see dust with the Deflector...and I think I should shut up now....:2:

pardon my ignorance, but what's RTV?

Also, has anyone noticed any whistle or other untoward aerodynamic effect after putting on a spoiler. I've read threats about whitling after putting a rack up top, but haven't seen anything on sounds after attaching a spoiler.

My 0.02, I think a spoiler looks better than a rear deflector, and I agree with comment about that the spoiler makes the X look less mini-van'ish.
CarolinaGirl
I love my spoiler!!! I notice no sound issues with the spoiler. I love the way it makes the back of my MDX look.

It is strictly for looks. I have never known of any rear spoiler (for any car) serving any purpose other than aesthetic.

I have the tailgate deflector on my MDX as that was what was available back in 2002. Now that the tailgate spoiler is available, I would still choose the tailgate deflector for it's styling. I do notice that the tailgate deflector does a fairly good job of keep dust off the back window at freeway speeds. At the tracks, the tailgate deflector has shaved off .5 seconds off my 1/4 mile E.T.:D

Anyone out there with a spoiler try using the 76" roof box? Somewhere on this site (can't find it now) heard somethng about the roof box and the spoiler possibily hitting each other, preventing you from opening the rear gate all the way when the roof box is up on top. Any truth to this?

Would appreciate any help/experience/warning prior to my installing my spoiler..

The deflector will help keeping the rear window less dusty while the spoiler is just for good looking.
