When backing up at 5 mph with foot on brake, car suddenly accelerated and hit telephone pole, then popped into drive and continued with forward acceleration - MDX CHANGED INTO FORWARD GEAR BY ITSELF.

Fortunately, I ran into another car or, otherwise, I would have crashed thru store front.

Car was totally out of control - my first accident in 25 years!

Is there history of MDXs loosing control? Has anyone experienced similar problem?

1st time I've heard anything like that before.

Also, you should be able to hold the brake hard enough to negate forward (or rearward in this case) motion. I would imagine, if I stomped the brake (hard) and the gas (floored) while in D5, the transmission would blow up before the vehicle got up to 5 MPH.

However I have read some posts about surging acceleration, but not to the degree you wrote. You can do a "search" and try to find out more.

eurohazrd, thanks for your response. I definitely had brake on while reversing. However, after impact I may have pulled my foot off brake while moving forward.

Hello to everybody who will read this message.
I am the owner of a 2005 MDX Sport edition, I never posted anything before in my life, always read other people comments, but today is a special day.
MY wife was just in a terrible accident, miracuasly she walked away with minor bruises and aches. Thank God, Acura, airbag and seatbelt. But it was no regular vehicle accident that you can think of.
She was making a left turn from a one way street to a street with 3 traffic lanes in both directions. As she was turning the MDX suddenly accelerated and the wheel started cutting to the right, she tried steering the other way and pressing on the brakes, but nothing seemed to help. It happened in seconds but for her it seemed like minutes of struggle. For a second she was able to steer a wheel in the opposite direction (to the left) but it was too late, the MDX was flying across four lanes of traffic to the opposite side striking oncoming car, a parked car and finally slamming in to the gate of the parking lot that was across the street from the direction that she was going ripping it from its pole and finally stopped on a slab of cement that it ripped from the ground. Again THANKS God nobody was walking on the street and nobody was in the parked car and nobody got hurt in the oncoming car as well. When FD arrived on the scene they were shocked at what they saw. And they also said that it was a miracle that my wife was OK and walked away from this accident, it’s like a great commercial for the MDX. I’m happy and proud that it was Our MDX and not any other car.
But what bothers me, is the question what went wrong for the MDX to behave like this suddenly. Funny thing is that I drove myself to a train station in the morning and did not notice anything wrong.
Currently this accident is under an investigation. I just hope that it never and will never happen to anybody else. I just would like to know if anybody heard anything like this before.
Thank you all for your help.
I love my MDX and if this one cannot be fixed our next SUV will be MDX

Wow- that sounds like a very bad crash. On the one hand, I'm glad all the safety systems worked to protect your wife. On the other hand, why were they called into action in the first place?
Since your's in an 05, not the 03 of hte previous poster, there is a fundamental change in the throttle system- the 05's have "Throttle by Wire", which means the connection between pedal and engine is electronic, not a cable.
It's an issue I've been watching for, but have never seen before. As a result, I can say that if any "unintended accelerations" have occurred, they've been few and far between. That sure doesn't mean much to someone whose loved one has just been taken for a ride through an intersection.
The obvious question that can never be answered is: did the driver mistakenly press the accelerator rather than the brake? Please don't take this the wrong way, I'm not trying to blame the victim.
THe "pulling right" may have been the torque steer that you see under very hard accleration. I've never heard that it is uncontrollable, so this may not be simple torque steer.
This definitely should be reported to Acura and National Highway Transportation Safety Board (NHTSB) as a life-threatening occurrence.

I understand what you are saying, and I have asked that question myself, but I talked to my wife and she said repeatedly that she was on a red light 2 cars in front of her, and after the light turned green and the other cars cleared the intersection, she released the break and pressed on the gas paddle as usual and suddenly the MDX started flying like a wild stallion. Believe me, my wife is a safe driver, in 10 years that she drives never an accident traffic ticket or any type of fender bender.
Also I tried calling the Dealership and speaking to the manager, but he told me that he was not aware of any kind of problems and it’s possible like you said that her foot may be got stuck on the paddle or it could be that the paddle got stuck on the mat. But if that’s the case she would not be able to press on the brakes and would feel that her foot is stuck.
My whole thing is not to blame somebody, but to get to the bottom why it happened and if it is, to stop it from happening again so nobody and I mean nobody has to find themselves in a situation like this.
Thank you,
