New policy in effect - 21 days, no re-stocking fee on opened/used items. Excludes software etc., gotta have box, CDs, manuals etc. as usual. http://www.compusa.com/terms.asp#in-store

... another one for Ripley's

Wow. This is good news! They're competing with Fry's and others. Before this somebody told me it was 20%/whatever restocking fee and so I don't buy much (hardly any) from them. Now there may be a reason to go there.

I was told they do have lots of weird fees and required participations/programs for suppliers (not apply to customers, but costs/causes vendors some headache).

It was 15% restocking fee before.
I have to check the local CompUSA on this 21 days policy.
greatscot
My CompUSA policy is "I don't shop there." All two times I've been in the local CompUSA I have to say were extremely bad experiences.
First time: See something I want, good price, take it to the register, they ring it up, it's almost $7.00 more than the shelf price shown. I bring this to the clerk's attention, she calls a manager, he says the higher price is it. I ask why the lower price on the shelf? He walks over there with me, he says the shelf price is wrong, that price expired yesterday, the register is showing today's price. I say, "oh, nothing like being a day late and $7 dollars short. Bye"
Second time: (still can't believe I was dumb enough to go a second time) I pick up the item I wanted, go to the register to pay. I ask if this will be compatibale with my computer. They say buy it, try it. If it's not compatable, we'll give you a store credit after the 15% restocking fee. I ask what a restocking fee is all about. They explain it. I say "well, I won't be buying it, but if I do, I'll come back for a 15% discount for not buying it this time, saving the restocking fee."
I know, I'm getting to be an old fart, but it's fun. :2:

I work in the field (network support for medium size businesses) and I have to tell you: if you don't know what you need - don't go to places like CompUSA or Best Buy.
Chances are sales person knows just about nothing about item you need. I shop in these places frequently, as I often need some parts for clients and can't wait for Internet order, even with overnight delivery. Need a part yesterday - you know how it goes in business. Well, I get scared sometimes by advises this places provide. The only chance to get an intelligent advise there is to find a teenager, who works part time, does not care about anything, but really loves computers. Some of these teens I would hire for my company, if they were a little more responsible. But other then that - forget chain stores... You have A LOT BETTER chance to get an intelligent advise on computers right here - at acuramdx.org.

...or look for a friendly (and rather geeky) looking customer who seems to only browse around for fun... oh wait, that might be me :p
I agree that if you don't really know the stuffs, do not go to CompUSA or even worse, Frys.
I have had lots of fun listening on weird advices at Frys (on one of my five hours browsing around Frys day :D )

Yeah, all those stores (every chain) equally suck in terms of their sales staff giving advise, just like all the stuff they sell suck because it doesn't work as advertised!!:D There 2 salespeople at Fry's here that are kinda knowledgable. One of the salesgirls here can decrypt a part number and say CAS 2.5 to explain why a certain memory module costs more than the other. Another salesguy can give the correct answer regarding which NAS box is better. Then the others... never mind. The best sales staff there are those that don't say anything other than try to help look up the computer to see if they have it in stock in their warehouse at the back or in the secure cage up front. (I go to Fry's once or twice a week since it's nearby here.)
