This goes with any laptop computers or lcd screens for computers. This is basically a lesson i learned about dead pixels. Always check to see what the manufacturer's policy is, or the store or website you are buying from policy is regarding dead pixels on a screen. I bought a toshiba laptop computer from Newegg.com. When i received it, there was one dead pixel on the screen. Being the anal person i am i returned it for a replacement. To my surprise Newegg wouldnt replace it because the policy according to Toshiba is 12 or more dead pixels to be considered defective!!!! So I'm getting my old laptop back with the one dead pixel.

Morale of the story: Check the policy about dead pixels before you buy. They vary from manufucaturer to manufacturer. Check store policy also.:crying:

I am suprised about the dead-pixel policy.

Advise: buy computers from Costco. Last year I bought one of the Princeton 17" LCD monitor there and found a dead pixel so I returned it and they gladly accept the return.

Thanks for the warning.

NewEgg wouldn't replace it, but how about Toshiba? What's the *manufacturers* policy?

Newegg called Toshiba to "verify" the reference number that i got from toshiba 1 week early. Newegg then called me back and stated that Toshiba's policy on warranty for notebooks is 12!!! (twelve) dead pixels or more to be considered defective. I searched toshiba's website but couldnt find the info.

I went to notebookreview.com and found that major brands like sony, toshiba, acer, ibm, gateway all have minimum dead pixel policies ranging from 5-10.

I've never had a dead pixel problem on any display (knock on wood) but in addition to the dead-pixel-count I have to think there's also a rule of thumb for the location of the dead pixels. If they're dead center on the screen you might get a replacement more easily, no?

I imagine the biggest problem is that even if you discover 1 off in a corner of the screen, now that you know it's there you can't help but focus on it and drive yourself nuts.

What color is a dead pixel -- is it always black or a dark red/brown, or is it "stuck on" in white?

Thanks for the heads-up, though; I'd always figured that "broken is broken" whether it's one dead pixel or if the screen doesn't work at all.

My inlaws opened up their new Sony Vaio only to find a 'dead' pixel that seems to have magically gone away. It was a reddish color. I think this is pretty common.

Try massaging it a bit enough to make rainbow effect BUT not too hard as well. Yeah the certain amount of dead pixel rules blow. It's not just newegg it the manufacturers themselves and they been in effect since LCD became mainstream, each has different rules. how many need to be dead in a certain area, are they clustered withing the perimeter of the screen etc, etc, etc. I have one stuck pixel luckily it is in blue and not as noticeable as red.

Five or six years ago (ages in computer terms!) I dropped a Mac PowerBook (it had a BLACK AND WHITE SCREEN- shows the age!) I had and broke several of the pixels in the upper right hand corner. Nothing else broke, but there were enough of them actually busted open that the liquid started to leak and spread slowly inside the screen. I couldn't touch it, it was between the layers, but I could see it.

It was bizarre, kind of this yellowish color if I remember right, and it just kept getting worse...and worse...and worse...

Not at all fun. And no warranty, of course. So, not at all cheap, either, as I recall.

Not completely on topic, but I figured I'd share... :p

The dead pixel problem is in mobile video as well. Alpine dosen't consider a screen defective unless it has 5 or more dead pixels.

I've got one almost right in the middle of the X's navi since delivery. Its blue and can only be noticed if you look when you're in anything but the map. Its not there when the map is displayed.
