Happy Birthday Dave!

Bummer on the slipping--I'm also interested in what your mileage is at nowadays, and I'm scared to death that I'm going to be feeling that nasty slipping soon too @ 58K miles...

Now then, Mercedes?! How about the Infiniti QX56? OK, a bit big, but otherwise up there on my list... How about the X5, or X3? Something about the MLs I just don't like...

Anyways, whatever you get, you have to hang around here and keep your advice flowing to us novice DIYers.

Hi Deltajetfixer:

Do they put in an external ATF filter when they installed the oil jet kit fix? If so, I didn't see it, or maybe I didn't know what to look for

When your filter arrives, would you please post a picture of it, so I know what to look for?

I have 65k miles on my 2001 MDX, and I just installed the biggest cooler I could get my hands on. I was thinking about putting in one of those inline Magnafine filters, but if there is one already, there is no need to do so.

Thanks

Thank you Deltajetfixer. I found it. What I don't understand is why the manual never said anything about ATF filter. I even remember the user's manual saying that there is no ATF filter that we can change. Are they lying to us? :D

Hi again, Deltajetfixer:

If you don't mind my asking, where did you order your filter from, and how much of a dent in your wallet did it cause? I am at about 65k miles now, and I think that dinky filter is due for a change. As for your symptoms, I would check the electrical connections. You will never know what these mechanics do when they install the oil jet kit.

Anyways, I inherited this MDX from my brother when it had 45k miles. At that mileage, the tranny fluid looked absolutely ugly brownish, and it smelled burnt. I had to do the drain and fill routine 6 times to get the fluid to turn reddish again. After that, I go through the drain and fill every 6k miles just to prolong the inevitable. This is a really comfortable, quiet car with plenty of power. We like it a lot, except for the tranny, which is terrible. Also, I'm only 5'11" and 180 lbs, but I had one hell of a time getting in and out of this car without contorting my neck.

Thanks again for the info on the filter. This forum is the absolute best when it comes to hidden info like this.

P.S. Don't feel bad about turning 40 :D It happened to me 10 years ago, and I'm still kicking around.

deltajetfixer,

Like New said, I'd like to know how much it costs as well and how long it took to replace. I'm at 81K and nothing major...yet('')
A belated birthday wish as well. :2:
Thanks

Hi Deltajetfixer:

Where online did you order the filter from? I tried very hard to locate a source but couldn't find anything.

Thanks

Hi all...sorry if this is a repeat post but i noticed my 02 MDX starting to slip at around 30mph. I brought it to a local mechanic for a oil change and asked him about the "slipping" and he said it's definitely a transmission problem. The mechanic went on and tell me to bring the car back to have the dealer look at, as the transmission is still under warranty (100k)

My question is: I did not buy any extended warranty, is this 100k warranty standard on transmission for MDX? Is the slipping the sign of definitely tranny replacement?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I think it's 3 years or 50K miles. I would still ask the dealer to check it out and if it needs to be replaced, Acura should pick up the cost due to the known problems. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

5 year/ 50K miles. Folks have reported here that Acura will replace trannys out of warranty a a "good will gesture", sometimes with the owner paying the labor costs.

If your tranny was recalled for the "Oil Jet Kit" fix, the warranty is 7 years / 70k miles.

Can you prove your statement above? I just spent $1230 for an extended 7/75 warranty on my 2001 MDX!!!

That's what the dealer told me when I picked up my car after they installed the kit. I have a 2001 MDX.

Be nice to see it in writing. I thought the warranty was only on replacement units.

What is your Dealer's name and location??
DaleB
Besides, the 'kit' is only for a specific problem, not any transmission failure.

Definitely take it to the dealership...fortunately I am at 30.500 miles and having the problem, but they know it is a problem, and if you are persistent, they should help you...otherwise try the Better Busikness Bureau Auto Line.

Good Luck!

Thanks all for such a quick respond. After calling the dearler on Monday and told them about the slipping problem, they wanted me to bring the car in immediately on that day. I told them that the earliest i can bring the car in is Tuesday.

When i dropped the car off, they told me that they would call American Honda to see if the can take care of this transmission problem for me. They told me that best case scenario, Acura would pay for everything, worst case, i have to split the cost.
Cerritos Acura put me into a 2005 Acura TL with navi.

I got a call from my service advisor guy this afternoon inform me that American Honda would "take care" of this service for me, he also told me that i have two broken engine mount and he would also take care of that as well! The bad news is, i have to bring the 2005TL back and get a Enterprise rental car instead, since American Honda is picking the bill including the rental.

I will keep you guys posted, and thanks for all the help and info.

My current offer is to replace tranny and get 7/75,000 warranty

I am reading all these messages and I am trying to understand. I am wondering if the new tranny they say they have put in the 2005 is going to resolve the problem. I have to advise tomorrow what I want to do with my problem 2002 Touring. 3-way call with Reg. Mgr. and American Honda

Hi all,
What's the symptom for the transmission slipping? Does the car just stall when it happens? Obviously I haven't experienced one yet. My '01 MDX has only 25K on it now, that trainy problem could come to me soon. I did take my X in for the oil jet recall.

Hmmm....

Did "deltajetfixer" ever come back with latest update?
He seemed to find a good answer (or remedy) to X's transmission problem even if it is not fundamental fix.

I am so glad that I came across with his post.

Thus, what would be a conclusion?

Can we make a conclusion to add one more maintenance item (A/T filter) to extend our X's tranny life?

If so, I think we should share this invaluable info with all other members (as many members as possible).

I am more than willing to shell out 40~50 buck (+ a few hours of elbow greese) per every 15~30k if it helps...

Any more thought?

Therein lies the dilemma. If not a fundamental fix will it still address potential problems? Or just delay them?

Maybe if your MDX is still new, you can delay the problem until the warranty has expired, after you sell the car, or have it fixed under an extended warranty. Decisions, decisions....

Wife's '01 MDX hit 47k and had new tranny installed last week. She said it was shifting funny and clunking from a rolling stop. Dealer told me new tranny was covered for 1 year. Time to start shopping maybe the New Subaru B9 Tribeca.

I Had my MDX recall performed 3 weeks ago and noticed slippage shifting from 2 - 3 now the slippage is terrible. Hendrick Acura in Charlotte has it and states that the transmission failure is coincidental to the recall and that it would cost 5K to replace the tranny. Odd, that I had no problems prior to the recall.

It sounds like what is happening to a lot of 2nd gen TLs. There seems to be quite a few cases where the transmission recall is done and then shortly thereafter the tranny fails. Not a scientific sampling or anything but it is not an isolated case.

I had the recall done on my TL a couple of months ago and so far so good.

It seems, considering the 'fix' about the only way to screw it up would result in leaks, which could certainly cause it to fail, and also create a mess. Unless, techs are dropping foregin material into the tranny.
But yes, I wondered about the same thing...but not for very long.
