Don't you sometimes wish that the roof rack was somehow easily detachable or retractable? I mean, I know you can uninstall it with effort, but I find myself thinking why can't SUV makers make retractable roof racks that pop out the sides?

The X looks sleeker without a roof rack IMO, especially with a rear deflector or spoiler. And who lugs stuff up there on a daily basis anyway, what with the huge space inside?

Doesn't bother me that it's not easily detachable, however I wish the rails were adjustable.
laborlitigator
I have no problem with it being there.

As is my Thule rack :2: .

And pictures are here.

On snow days, I with ALL roof racks on ALL vehicles were detachable. Ever drive behind some jerk with snow blowing off his roof onto your windshield? And it's a pain to get the snow brush in there to clean it (not to mention getting Zaino on and off).

I've had my X about 2.5 years and I've *never* used the roof rack.

Different strokes . . . I've had my MDX about the same amount of time, and use my Thule rack all the time :trustme:. Probably wouldn't, though, if I had the factory rack.

One the great things about MDXs: flexibility.

Actually, I think I've only ever seen one MDX with something on the roof rack.

I think the MDX looks better without the rack. And let's be honest, it's not much of a rack is it? It is non adjustable, and there are no longitudinal bars.
I have yet to use my roof rack, but someday I may use it for skis or snowboards!

Me too. Taking it off would also mean you have to put it somewhere. And there's probably a little weight to them so doing it enough times would eventually mean disaster for the paint.

Absolutely agree. When I bought the vehicle I never dreamed the rails were not adjustable. Went back to dealer a couple of weeks after I bought and asked how to adjust. The service manager had to call a mechanic when he could not figure it out. Mechanic then told both of us they were not adjustable.

Bad design.

I use mine quite a bit in the summer for bikes. See my sig line for pics.

Me too. :4:
I use mine to carry bikes in the spring, summer and fall, skis in the winter, and miscellaneous loads (ladders, mattresses, etc.) year-round.

No one has mentioned that you'd get better mileage w/out the rack on there. Seriously, it makes a difference. Maybe only 1mpg, maybe 2. Either way, it'd be nice to be able to remove it. Adjustable would have saved me a lot of drilling hassle when I first got my roof box. Had I to do it over, I'd get it w/out the built-in rack and get a removeable Thule or Yakima.

Oh, if you buy a roof box, make sure you get one that can open from both sides!

While theoretically this may be true, in the real world, I do not think the roof rack provides enough wind resistance to make a significant difference in the gas mileage. Although there is likely to be some difference, it would be negligible at best, with a few tenths in mpg improvement and not 1 to 2 mpg.

Of course, it is a different situation if the roof rack is loaded. In that case, the difference in mileage would be more apparent.

In high school (20+ years ago) we did an experiment with a ski rack (no skis) on a car. It made a difference of 2mpg on average. Our X racks are lower profile so I'm guessing 1mpg. My roof box drops my mileage by 2-3mpg.

Anyone want to take their roof rack off and do the experiment?
