I was reminded by a thread on another site about this thing I heard about many years ago....
If you dial 990 on your phone (and this works), you will get a playback of your phone number. If your phone is being tapped, it will give the number of the phone tapping you, or a busy signal....supposedly. There are other combinations that I heard of from a guy I met once that worked for Ma Bell.....like 110 plus a couple other numbers unlocks numbers disconnected for nonpayment, 220 does something as well....etc.
Anyone ever heard of this? Try the 990 thing.......it worked say 6 months ago, but it's not working here now for some reason, hm. |

These service and test numbers are all dependent on your local carrier and may even vary depending on what switch type you are connected to.
The ANI (Automatic Number Identification) call is often simply used for testing to assure the correct pair is being worked on. If you don't know the local number a toll free one is: 888-902-9998
MCI customer service will tell you what number you are calling from: 800-444-4444
Here is an International ANI 101073217709889664
Speaking of toll free, this is a cool number to have around: 800-337-4194.
This is the Ameritech resporg (responsible organization) ID service to find who owns a specific toll free number. |

When I was a kid we would go to payphones and dial on the rotary dial a prefix between 574-579 (depending on the actual prefix) and then the last 4 digits of the number. Click the hook once and you'd get a tone, then hang up and it would ring. It would work at my house too.
Now at my house I can just dial my own number and some dude says it's on my own line, then I hang up and it rings. Pretty handy if I'm trying to set ring volumes as long as I turn off the answering machine. Then again I guess I could just use my cell. |

When I was a kid I discovered that some sequence like 711 or something would put a phone into lockout. Whenever we visited somebody I would dial that number and when someone tried to use the phone it would be dead. The lockout lasted for a pretty good while, seems like at least 30min or so...
Guess I am lucky nobody needed to dial 911 or I would have less fond memories of the act! (no cell phones 30 years ago) |

Silence, then: "If you'd like to make a call, please hang up and try again"
