The stock sub is a joke. The amp is a tiny thing -- think two box of Altoid taped back2back! It is buried in the panel ahead of the sub.

You can get a decent 5 channel amp to replace all the factory crap and it will leave some room in the headrest storage bin. Good installers do this kind of thing for owners of higher end cars all the time -- it is different than the audio show kids who like giant showy amps. Most BMWs/Porsches/Corevettes that get modded are also trying to retain a factory look/function. Most the major name amps come in such a config, though it does not sell anywhere as well as their giant super high power mono amps -- of course is you want 5+ seperate amps you would probably drive a CRX :D

The improvement in both absolute power and quality is extreme, and the cost can be kept under $1000.

Good Luck!

...the quality of all those units is very very good. I shopped most of those about a year ago. Most offer all the flexibility to control at least the initial levels so that you don't shake youself to death. Some have variable/remote levels so that you can dial down the sub when spouse/kids are around, very nice. The amps have multipe inputs and can integrate perfectly with the factory unit and/or add-ons.

Technically you could just get one mono amp to drive simply a replacement sub, but the benefits of putting all the factory crap for sale on ebay and starting fresh are considerable.

Of course you will want high quality interconnects & speaker cables, pretty solid drivers for the front & rear (possibly true seperates with xcrossovers for the front tweeter points...). Probably some sound damping material too. With careful shopping and a friendly installer and/or some DIY I do think you can upgrade everything except the head unit for right around $1K (ok maybe $1500).

To me, that seems like a fair amount to spend given the high value of the MDX. You'd have system that rivals all but true high-end stuff and it would be totally 'stealth'.

Personally, the renov8tress and I decided to wait till our MDX is "fully aged". With two pre-school kids we have a lot 'spending opportunities' ahead of us... :D

Decent amp suggestions, I am just not a fan of the 5 channel or 6 channel amp, most are not built with a big enough power supply or enough capacitance, so when a loud, deep bass note hits, power is pulled from the other channels to the sub and overall sound suffers. I would recomend something like a JL 300/4 and a JL 250/1. Much more dynamic setup.

I totally agree that a JL Audio 250 mono is one rockin sub amp -- it costs almost $400 all by it self! Ditto for the 300 4-chanel. They will take up more space (probably too much to allow anything else to fit in the headrest compartment) and cost at least $200 more than even the (very sweet) JL 5 channel. For $400 you could get most of the others AND have money in your pocket...

The dilema of trying to stay "close to stock" is that you do give up the 'ultimate power' but isn't everything a compromise at some level?
