I've read through the previous oil threads and found many discussions on synthetic oils, but not many on conventional. I read that Tim prefers Duralube.

What are the most preferred/best/established 5W-30 conventional motor oils used?

I've been using Castrol for years in all my vehicles except for my Bimmer (requires synthetic) w/o any problems. I change the oil and rotate the tires every 5000 miles.

I second that. Used Castrol in all kinds of vehicles before syns were a household name. Remember older API test results where Castrol was always at the top in temperature tests, along with Chevron oils.

I like Chevron Supreme 5w-30. You can buy it by the case at Costco. It's just plain good.:4:

Castrol GTX has been serving me well, too.

Used Castrol for more than 15 years on all my vehicles. Some times used dealer oil if it's on sale.

By the way, I believe Duralube is a brand name for oil treatment. The manufacturer originally claimed one treatment last forever (it's about 10 years ago) but got sued since there is no evidence to prove this. If you really want a good oil treatment, Xcelplus is the one. But it's very very very expensive. They have proof of what they claimed about their products.

I have been using Pennzoil in all my cars for 20+ years, changing oil at 5K mi intervals. Never had any problems.

Realistically, I do not think there is a great difference between oil brands that are used, as long as you use reputable brands and follow regular and reasonable oil change intervals. It is more a matter of personal preference.

For Conventional, I would use Castrol as well.

Right to the point!

The price of engine oil is so high recently. The price at Wal Mart ($1.76)is even higher from dealer ($1.56). So I bought from dealer more frequently. But the oil from dealer, although it says Honda, if you take a closer look, it's actually manufactured by either Mobile or Exxon.

And, I learned recently many Honda dealers in my area (Maryland) do not carry ordinary retail engine oil any more. They only order oil in bulk which is 50 gallons for the shop use.

That's why I usually stock up on oil when it is on sale at either Kragen or AutoZone. I watch when the advertised price drops to about 99c per quart (after rebate), and pick up a couple cases. This lasts for about 5 to 6 oil changes (between both cars), which means I need to restock every year to year-and-a-half or so. This works for me. :4:
OH Bob
Are you guys for real?

So you save 20 cents per quart of oil, big deal!

Let's explore this just a bit further. After 100,000 miles, at 5,000 miles per oil change, you're looking at 20 oil changes (100,000/5,000). If the oil required per change is 5 quarts, then you're looking at a savings of 1 dollar per oil change. Over a period of 100,000 miles the cost savings would amount to a whole $20.00!

For a cost of around $40,000 for an MDX one is worried about saving $20.00 on oil changes over 100,000 miles?

I just don't get it!

Perhaps one would be better advised to review the costs on one's insurance policy! Ten cents per quart just doesn't do it.

Well, a penny saved is a penny earned. And after spending $40000 on the car purchase, I think I do need to take every opportunity
to save any $20 !

Not every single thing we do make the best economical sense.
Everyone has their principles of living. The satisfaction I got from saving $1 on the oil, and changing the oil myself, is much greater
than the dollars I could save by DIY.

Heck, if I were to charge my consulting rate for all the hours I put in doing DIY work on my MDX, I might as well hire an personal Acura technician to work on my car ;)

Nevertheless, I don't mean not to spend time to do comparison
shopping on the insurance. I agree it will probably give better $saving for the time spent. But then don't you think a guy who would try hard to save that $0.20/quart of oil would make sure he gets the best deal on the car insurance as well ?

I started out in the '50s using Kendall (made in my hometown). Then, when the underground oil got too hard to get, and their oil was no longer 100% PA oil, I switched to Quaker State; then when IT changed to not 100% PA oil, I changed to Pennzoil. Even though there's no PA oil used for lubricating anymore, I've stuck with Pennzoil and have been quite happy with it -- the engine internals seem to stay quite clean. I had the oil pan pulled on my '63 Studebaker once (gasket leak at 85K miles), and the mechanic couldn't believe how clean the internals were without the pan ever having been dropped before -- that car always used Kendall.
OH Bob
Northern-MDX,

Evidentally I mis-posted! Please see my reply on the new thread, same subject. Thanx.

I just had my first oil change in 2004 MDX.
My mechanic was surprised that they recommended 5W-20 oil in the maintenance manual. He said that it will be too thin, but used it anyway.
I was going to switch to synthetic, as I did on my other cars, but could not find it in 5W-20. The guy in Napa said they do not make synthetics 5W-20, except for one brand for Ford (I forgot which).
Can I use 5W-30 synthetic (I like Mobil 1 with their filter)?
Thanks for the input.

I also have been doing the 3k intervals,
because changing oil is fun.

BTW, it's money well "wasted" ;)

I guess my only question is; why ever 3,000 miles?

I have been changing oil on my cars every 5,000 miles and never had a problem with any car that I'll own.

PS, my wife has a 94 Ledgend that has over 173,000 miles and runs like new.
