Headphone suggestion for NAV/RES! - Click HERE for Original Thread

First post, owner of new 2005 NAV/RES. Appreciate the input on accessories, bought several already from HondaAcuraWorld and am an early adopter of Zaino.

In my research for additional headphones for the RES I happened upon a nice headset that is cost effective, sounds decent and more importantly, child friendly and child proof (read on). My parameters were that it had to have at least a 8’ cord to be able to reach into the left 2nd row seat, and have a volume control on the cord so that I could simply plug it into the rear additional headset jacks (which are set at approx. 2/3 of high volume to preserve hearing!). By being able to control the volume at the headset, there wouldn’t have to be any hopping into the third row to adjust the volume and there would be the option of having a y-adaptor stereo mini-plug to add even more headphones to those three jacks if I’m carrying the basketball team!

Those parameters were actually hard to find and I luckily happened on the Koss UR29 which at $20-$25 online ($34.95 at CompUSA) had all those features and get this, has a lifetime warranty…….that is the kid proof part!! Decent sound for a closed can, not high end, but sufficient for this purpose. Headset fits a child’s head great, and would fit all but the largest adult head. It’s a little snug on me, but I can’t even find a baseball cap to fit me! Has a 8’ single cord that has a volume control that hangs about chest level that can zero the volume down if necessary. Better yet, they collapse down and can easily be stowed in the rear storage compartment under the lid. If you’re in the market take a look at these, I can heartily recommend them if you have kids.

I believe they are $25 at Amazon shipped free, I got mine on sale at Buy.com for $19.00 with free shipping as I bought three sets. The lifetime warranty from Koss is the clincher.

BTW I also got a 10’ long mini-plug headset extension that I ran under the mats from the rear jack area, and have the female end under my driver side mat. I am using a fairly inexpensive open ear bud headset, the Sennheiser MX500's, for listening to the ball game using the RES while my wife listens to what ever she wants to up front……(helps with the spousal acceptance factor). I do like the flexibility the factory RES allows.

The wireless headphones that come with the X are nice. They are a little position sensitive, meaning if you put your head down for example, you will lose the signal. So I opted to add wired cans when I went to get additional headsets. There are other options as well which would allow higher end headsets and ear canal headsets like the Shure or the Etymotics using an additional volume control plugged ino the headphone extension if need be. Wish they made those with a volume control built in. The longest headphone extension I could find that had a volume control on it was the Sennheiser HZR62 at $30.00 which is 18 feet long but had dual controls and was a little awkward. Most others were 6’ long and that would put the volume control in the 2nd row. To these you can add your dream headphones if need be. I'm still looking for a 10' extension with a volume control that could reach the front seat if anyone knows of one!

The UR29’s are really a nice cost effective solution. Koss also makes a older version UR19 which has a dual 8’ cord and inline volume control for $10-$20 as well (BestBuy has them for $24.99). I didn’t like the way these sounded or fit.

Thanks for all the info, would like to hear what other headset solutions others have come up with for the factory RES and hope someone find this useful.

Good post. Thanks for the info.

I myself don't fully like the factory headsets either. My son has twice left them on only to run the battery dead. A wired setup would eliminate that problem.

Here's the link to the Koss UR 29 headphones at $19.03 at Buy.com with free shipping. Free shipping is for an order over $25.

This is the Y adaptor I bought that would allow you to plug 2 headsets into one of the three aux audio outputs in the third row to create 4 total (or more if you're carrying the basketball team!)

Always do a search for buy.com coupons, they always seem to be running something, ie. 10% for new customers, $5 off $50, etc.

Been using these for about 6 weeks and they have held up well and are great for the price.

Another alternative to factory hp is one from Clarion. It is wireless IR and it has a microswitch built in so it turns off if they are removed from the child's head. No more drained batteries

Hmmm, the Clarion WH105 is a good option. Besides the automatic ON/OFF microswitch feature, it is cheaper than the OEM. Well kinda, $120 for the 2 headphone package plus $35 for each additional headphone. Which reminds me, why is the '05 OEM headphone more expensive than the previous years, isn't the RES in the '05 same as the one in the '04?
