Free online site to store digital pics? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Does anyone know of a free online site that will let you store digital pics? The main requirement is that I want people to be able to view them at the full resolution, not some small thumbnail. I don't mind if there is a storage space limit. As long as I am able to post a few 2mb pics and let others directly view the full size picture.

FWIW I have used Ofoto.com for years now. It is a subsidiary of Kodak. You won't have 2 meg pics to view on the Internet as you don't need that much to view a pic. Your stored pics can be viewed and ordered by anyone you send an invite to. Top quality prints at a very reasonable price. Basically what I'm saying is, the full image is there if you order a pic. My family members love it. They can see and order a Christmas picture on Christmas day. I know there are other companies out there and I'm sure folks will pipe up about them.

I don't like ofoto because people who view your picture only see a fairly small thumbnail. My requirements was to be able to store and view the full resolution. I'll have to check out imagestation or flickr.

Just so you know, if you click on the thumbnail it will open a larger size.

But the larger size is just 448x320, isn't it? Or is there a way to see a much larger resolution?

Still flickr.com :) Yahoo just bought them over. They've been tearing up the community pictures sharing scene.

The features look great! But to get unlimited storage and full-resolution storage of the original images, and more than 10MB upload/month, you have to buy the subscription at $41.77/year. Not too bad monthly, though, and with Yahoo behind them they should stick around.

One more question....

For all the sites that were recommended, if I share my pics with friends, do they have to have a username/password to the site to view my pics? Or are they able to view without logging in?

You don't have to sign in to view pictures in Flickr. Matter of fact, if the option is selected by you when sharing the album, Ofoto can also allow people to view pictures without signing in.

As far as I can tell, Flickr doesn't have an "unlisted" option, does it?

That is, in Flickr, if you make your photos private, they don't get shared with the general community. But friends and family need to register and log into Flickr to see them?

You can make your photos public, and send the URL's to friends and family. They don't have to register and log in. However, by making your photos public, it goes into that Flickr community where your photos are "advertised" to others in the community.

Am I missing something? Is there a way to prevent your photos from being listed under "Everyone" but still have family and friends not have to register and log in?

Some other sites have the equivalent of an "unlisted" behavior. They don't require a registration/login, and the URL isn't tighly secured with a password. But the URL to the photos aren't advertised anywhere, so the photos aren't easy to get at.

Thanks.

I haven't used Flickr partly because I use Apple's .mac service where I have a public folder and a private one where my family and friends know the simple password. Works the best...

Ah, from how you were recommending Flickr I thought you were using it regularly.

It seems that there are roughly several levels of (non-)privacy:

- Viewable by anyone without registering/logging in, and photos are actively advertised on the site. E.g. Flickr public photos.

- Same as above but you have to register and login. E.g. ImageStation if you list your photos under a public category.

- Not advertised on the site, but viewable by anyone who has the URL without registering and logging in. E.g. smugmug.com's private galleries.. Or webshots.com (which shows ads next to your photos).

- Same as the above, but you have to register and log in. E.g. ImageStation if you don't put photos in a category, and Flickr for privte photos.

- Not advertised on the site, and viewable only if you have a password to the photos, but you don't have to register and login. smugmug.com's "secure" galleries have this, and apparently so does Apple's Mac service.

- Same as the above but you have to register and log in.

I've been looking for a service better than ImageStation. ImageStation is great because it's free for the most part, but they want people to register and login, and the main mode of viewing photos shows relatively small photo sizes.

I love Flickr but it seems that you have to make your photos really public to everyone to not require registration/login. Plus it's natural photo viewing size is on the smaller side.

Right now I'm trying smugmug.com, which up until Flickr had been getting a lot of buzz. It's not free (and neither is Flickr if you want to use it seriously), but it seems to have a great blend of features I want. The privacy options are more flexible, the default viewing can be forced to 600x450 or 800x600, and it's quite easy to use.

Here are some smugmug.com sample galleries that are public:

I had checked out the service last when I was trying to decide between .Mac functionalities and other similar services since sharing photos with friends and family is a big thing for me. Then I suggested Flickr because lot less people here are likely to have an Apple.

BTW, for Apple users, Flickr has a iPhoto plugin that works like a charm to publish pictures to their site.
