I have a 3 month old '05 MDX Touring + Navi with everything except RES. didn't like the small screen and figured I can get better quality aftermarket?

Anyone with good experiences on aftermarket overhead dvd systems? specifically I'm looking at the

Panasonic CY-VHD9500U

or

Clarion OHMD102

Are there any known issues with install? I would like to have it installed and wired to the front aux input rather than resorting to FM.

If anyone can post any positive experiences and a bay area installer you can recommend, I'd appreciate it.

Asmo, sorry to piggyback on your thread.. but I also need our fellow X owner's opinion about the:
1)Audiovox MMD70 7"
or
2)Sony Mobile Dream System II DVD Player with 9"

thanks..

Check out the JVC overhead at overstock. It's pretty cheap <$300 with coupon and the quality is pretty good. The picture quality is comparable with the Sony unit except that this doesn't come with a DVD player.

You may check it out personally at Fry's if you have one around.

The Panasonic is nice but I'd prefer the Sony if I have to choose.

Audiovox has been nothing but nightmares for our store, terrible QC, sub-par picture, and customer service leaves a lot to be desired. As far as I am concerned, Sony is a four letter word. Pre out voltage is low, and they tend to have noise problems. The Clarion monitors are the way to go. Best picture of any of the brands I have seen, and they just don't break.

BTW, the store I work for is blowing out demo screens cheap! PM me or email me at rmiller@thesoundroom.com if you are interested.

Looking for a mid-high end solution so probably not looking at JVC or Audiovox

For Sony, I heard some bad reviews about screen shaking during drive(check the circuit city website for consumer reviews).

Will check out the Clarion.

Any capable installers in the Bay Area?

Any shaking is the fault of a installer unless the shaking they are referring to is the actual hinge of the screen. Audiovox for me has always been synonymous with low end A/V gear. They have gotten better but still would pick something else. I like Panys or Sonys. My only gripe is they are now making all in one gear. Sure it is easy for a install. But who still needs to change the disc? The driver or the passenger in the front. Kinda awkward to try to slip in a disc in the slot load. I still prefer a two part with the dvd player and the monitor separate. Do a quick search of how most installed a overhead using brackets. Though I would be wary with the side curtain airbags now. Try ecost.com if you plan on doing it yourself.

Yah... the hinge is the culprit with sony.

clarion has a side-load interface...

even if the driver can "load" the dvd, it's still a big hassle having to navigate menus and such (since most movies don't just "play" when loaded). so I'm not too concerned about front user access.

as I read the forum I'm finding that "AUX" on MDX 05 is not such a straightforward thing.. . I have Navi and XM ... so I just may be out of luck and have to invest in an FM modulator?

our kids are 5 and 2 so they won't put on headphones..

luckily, they don't know the meaning of "fidelity", either.

I actually rip my daughters DVDs so it only has the movies so when I load it,it plays automatically.

Warzau-

What program do you use to rip, edit and burn? Which type of media are you using DVD +R, -R?
Warzau
I use DVD-R and use DVD-Shrink. You need Nero since shrink use that burning engine. http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html I print on my DVDs I buy them from here http://www.meritline.com/ I use either Taiyo Yuden or Ritek.

Going back to the original topic...

I went to circuit city and got a firsthand look at both the Sony and Panny.

decided not to buy either... they are both 480x234 resolution. in the Panny manual it says 336,960 pixels... but in reality they get that number by 480x234x3 (R,G,B channels).

so needless to say, the resolution looked pretty bad.

Looking for something that will do native 640x480 or 720x480 type stuff... maybe I'll do the portable dvd mount on the roof and do wiring just to get the DC plug working.

saw a brand that did higher res but unit looked ugly and the interface was unusable. (plus no swivel screen)

still want to demo the clarion and look for other alternates.

anyone have experience with Blaupunkt?
alphaforcex
I don't think you'll like Blaupunkt. It is even worse than Sony & Pany in my opinion. Try Icon TV if you are into picture quality. There are many Taiwanese/Korean LCD panels that are really good as well if you don't care about no brand alternatives. Resolution doesn't tell you everything. You should check the brightness and contrast ratio as well.

Ok... so I had all but given up... until I found out that Alpine introduced their new DVD system to be shipping in April.

http://www.alpine-usa.com/company_i...r-seat_ent.html

Pretty much has it all... 1.15 megapixel 10.2in display.. built in dvd with fm modulator. wireless headphone.

msrp $900.

can't wait to ck it out. I've been very pleased with Alpine gear in the past.

Asmo,
I have Alpine electronics in my MDX, including two of their video screens (TME M760 and TMX-R705) and the in dash DVD player (DVA-5205). I'm very pleased with the quality after 2.5 years.

Downside: When they say "shipping in April", it probably won't happen for many months later.

Guys,

Have any of you mounted one in an X with a moonroof? That is my concern - can it be done?

All MDXs have moonroofs.

Though I haven't installed one myself. I know for a fact it can be done. My X has the factory RES, but many owners here have installed aftermarket screens.

Yes, this could be done. As a matter of fact, many of us have done it.
