I have some scratches on the corner of my rear bumper (my wife had a little run-in with a Toyota Sequoia in a parking lot). The largest of the scratches are about 1/4" thick and down to the plastic but otherwise no noticable damage to the bumper itself.
Can anyone tell me if the bumper needs to be completely repainted for the paint to match or can the just paint the scratches?
My X is still pretty new so I really want the repair to look good but obviously want to keep the price down since we won't be reporting this to the ins co.
I can attack a pic this eve if that will help any. |

Most likely, yes. I got a 1/8" scrape down to the plastic on the corner of the bumper from a car wash recently and my buddy who runs a body shop said it was all or nothing. |

I talked with a good friend who has been in the bodyshop business for almost 30 years. The products for making excellent repairs to flexible plastics continue to improve --as do the factory designs for making the flexible plastic itself.
The number of body repair professional with the skills to do plastic repairs is still much smaller than those skilled in sheet metal work or straight paint -- it takes more training and more 'diagnostic' skill.
There are a small but growing number of shops that specialize in flexible plastic repair.
The key factors are: cost to repair vs replace, time to finish, liklihood of 'invisble' repair.
To assess I really think you will need to have both a "traditional" estimate and a "new style" estimate.

I have the same problem. This is a co-worker trying to park next to me last month! She left the car like this because she was late to work but came back later in the day to move it. She didn't expect to see me there waiting for her (she didn't even realize it was my truck), but my friends in security who patrol the parking lot had called me to come see what she had done.
Took it the auto body shop used by the dealer today - quote was $535.00 to repair and repaint the entire bumper. Was told there was no real other way to do it. Will get a couple of more quotes this week while I'm off work for Spring Break.
She will pay, or she will pay...:yodaddy: |

Forgot to tell you my estimate...$355.80 Wish I had a decent pic. It's almost better to wait for worse damage before I do anything. I suppose I could hold on to the money but I'm sure the car wash's insurance company will want to cut the check to me and the body shop.
Sounds like I got off easy. The washes that send cars through on a rack apparently once in a while throw one off the end into the building. This guy said he did $15,000 of work to a Mercedes once. |

i was thinking that i should get a brand new painted one and install it instead of repainting.
The reason is that last time i trade in my car, the dealer actually deduct $1000.00 because of the repainted rear bumper.
my question is also that if i install a brand new painted one, will be any record that dealer can trace in case of trading-in?
Thank you

Unreal! That kinda pic explains a lot of the battle scars our X is showing. Some of the damage I can't even figure out. The most recent is a large, light-blue-old-lady's-car-color scrape on the right rear quarter panel, but there's a freakin' puncture wound there, too. It's too high for her "curb feelers" and looks like it's been stabbed with an umbrella or something.
Insofar as everyone's bumper damage, I remember RoadRunner had his front bumper airbrushed and blended and it turned out quite well. IIRC it was only paint damage and no dents/scratches into the plastic.
I was able to wetsand/touchup/polish some gouges on the rear bumper, but I'd guess they were less than 1/16" deep. I have several other, parallel gouges of unknown origin that I know will be too deep to fix myself. I've just resigned myself to the fact that the existing rear bumper is now sacrificial and will eventually replace it when the damage is too much to look at.
My guess is that in many cases the labor for repair and repaint (and potentially blending if a spot-repair) exceeds the cost of just replacing the whole damn thing. |

$1000 deduction ? How many times do you think they've done minor body work to cars and sold them as new ? Stuff happens on car lots all the time. F'n dealers. R&R and blend is the proper way to handle the repair if it can't be touched up. A factory painted bumper usually won't match well after a couple of years of fading and oxidizing. |

| DAMN! She needs to be FIRED! Even if it wasn't an MDX, it shows a complete lack of respect for the property of others ... to say nothing of being absolutely STUPID to think that this was a 'parking spot'. |

Got a second estimate this afternoon - $574. It calls for doing the exact same work - repair and repaint the entire rear bumper, including replacing the black plastic "step" on the top of the bumper. Will get a third estimate before the end of week.
Will probably go ahead and get the work done (after she gives me my money!) because it will also take care of a number of other small scratches and scraps I've collected over the past 3 1/2 years...
The individual who hit me is known to have "issues". Her car is less than a year old and has body damage evidence of at least 6 different minor "accidents". The day it happened, I was standing by my X examining the situation when she approached me and stated, "I'm so glad you are here - can you help me back-up, I think I parked too close to that other car". She didn't know it was MY car and tried to deny that she had actually scratched my car until after she backed-up (almost hitting me again) and looked at the bumper. :1pat: |

I also am amazed by that park job....and I have seen some sh!tty ones before.
diverman about your bumper....sagebrush pearl may be hard match for a painter. A painter will have no trouble getting the exact color, but they need to match the factory spray pattern directionally. I think this is why people would rather just paint the entire panel.
If someone says they can perform a "spot job", and you are confident in their skills, go for it. The worst that can happen is they will just have to do it over again. Usually a spot job is less expensive, and can look good when done right. |

Thanks to all of you for the info!
I went to a trusted auto body center yesterday and they said they would sand down and repaint just a section of the bumper. He did say they would still have to take off the bumper to do a clearcoat on the whole bumper as it would peel if they just clearcoated the section.
I have almost the same size scratch (maybe not as deep) and in the exact same place as HARDROCK. I was quoted $386.00 but I am going to get another quote from a shop that the Honda dealership recommends. I doubt it will be much better though.
HARDROCK... That *&%@# that hit you sounds like she is crazy!!! How could she have not known she had hit you? |

| I think that you should wait until you get another scratch or two or get rear-ended so that someone else has to pay. What could be worse than if you have it done now and then it happens again? The more dings you get, the cheaper the job will be per ding. |

Got a check today for $535.00 from my idiot co-worker who scratched my bumper last month. I sent her a letter with three estimates for the repair and demanded she pay the middle one (each repair estimate required repainting the entire rear bumper).
Now that I've got my money (and washed my X), the "scratch" ain't looking so bad but after 44K miles on my '02, the tread on my tires is getting a little thin....
If it had been anyone else who hit me, I would have told them don't worry about it - the damage really wasn't that bad. But I caught this fool trying to move her car before anyone noticed what she did! |

You would have been far nicer person than I to say 'don't worry' about the damage no matter who hit my X! I surely don't blame you especially for wanting to get the money out of her!!! |
