My wife brought her '04 MDX in this weekend for an oil and VTM4 change. We also wanted them to address the low speed brake slapping noise. Turns out they said that there was a front brake TSB just released (as opposed to the back brake problem). They are ordering all of the parts to do the front and back at the same time.
If anyone has been having problems, you may want to look into this new TSB. |

If it's a 'slap' or more of a 'clunk' after reversing direction, it's an old problem. Old symptom I should say, not really a functional problem.
But if this is entirely new, thanks for heads up. |

What is a "slapping Noise?"

I know the sound itself is not new. We've had it for a while, but were waiting for our normal service before addressing it. I also know that there was a TSB out there to shim the brakes.
The problem happens at low speed (reverse or forward doesn't matter) where a popping or slapping sound is heard from the brakes (sounds like at least front brakes). Apparently, according to Acura, there is a notice about the back brakes; however, they are saying now a new notice just came out about the front brakes. There plan was to do both at the same time and they have ordered parts. |

Just had the work done. Here is what they did:
Back brakes: Replaced rear brake pad shims
Front brakes: Replaced front caliper brackets
The diagnosis for both was that the brake pads were shifting in the calipers. However, I don't know why the fix was different from front to rear.
I've heard about the shims before which is what I believe the older TSB covered. The front brackets I believe is a new fix as mentioned by Acura.
Hope this is helpful. |

ScottS2K,
Do you happen to have the TSB number for the front brake fix? Thanks. |

That don't specifically mention "TSB" as such, but they do say "per S/B" which I take to be service bulletin. The two S/B's they indicate are:
05-012
04-009
Hope this is useful. |

So the 05-012 must be for the front brakes. Thanks. |

according that website, those 2 were the only TSBs found for my 2004 MDX (regarding brakes noises), might have some others for other years though.
my dealer said they are related to each other and I'm getting my rear brakes shimmed next weekend :) during the 7500 mile maintence (mine's free, otherwise I'd do it myself)
thanks for the heads on the brake TSB guys, i don't think they would have done it without me asking them to.
I had just learned to live with the clunk, and thought it was normal.... I'll miss it
:p |

Don't worry. IIRC, this is only a temporary fix. The clunk will return. |

I seem to have this problem with my brakes, but my 2002 MDX is now out of the warrantee period (52K miles). Is this something that a dealer will do at no charge? If not, is this something that must be addressed now that I know what it is? |

| Every morning I get a bad scraping sound from the brakes and am wondering if everyone hears this? I have heard this since the first year of ownership. The parking brake also does not seem to work very well. |

followup: my dealer did the rear TSB and ended up replacing my front calipers with the new style "non-shifting" kind.....all under some TSB that I couldn't find the info for...
whatever the difference, it seems to have gotten rid of my clunk for now, time will tell
all covered and free of charge of course |

I've NEVER heard a scraping sound and my Parking brake works great
(i realize this when i put my X in D5 and go nowhere, because I forgot to release the brake :D )
my X is almost a year old, but with only about 9K miles on it |

Not sure about the scraping sound. Mine doesn't do that. Just send yours to the shop and let them figure it out...
As for the parking brakes, at first I thought mine didn't work very well either. Then somebody here said we'll have to step on it hard. Basically don't stop at the first click sound but a few more clicks down, ie. it's not an electronic parking brake:| After that, I found the parking brakes actually do work! |

Hi Softgenious,
I have heard a scrapping sound occasionally and found that it was coming from rust being rubbed off the brake rotors. After a rain or washing, the brake rotors get wet and rust (oxidation) appears. The sound goes away as the rust gets rubbed off after driving a bit.
Next time you hear it, take a look at the rotors.
