Opinions on the new LG 44" DLP? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I think my old tube TV may have died (more on that next post). I saw an LG at Best Buy and the picture was phenominal; especially for the price. Not sure which one of these two it was:

LG's website does NOT give much info and I'm not even sure what the difference between these two are?? Any experience out there or opinions about these? I must confess a prior prejudice against Goldstar :(

When I click the ON button it sounds as if the tube is trying to power up (there is that "whoosh" sound), then there are three clicks about a second apart and nothing ever happens. Does not matter if I use the remote or the front panel button.

Any ideas? Tube, relay switch, power pack???

LG's new DLPs are impressive. We have the Z61D on display, looks great for the price. The main difference in the two is the Z61D uses the TI HD2 DLP chip versus the HD3 DLP chip in the Z63D. I believe they have a higher contrast ratio on the Z63D and there are some input differences as well.

Why not a plasma? I will be replacing my still functioning Sony XBR tube in the near future. I have looked at all the different technologies and have settled on plasma. I like the small form factor since it gives me more room in my room! The picture is outstanding. I'm ready to upgrade to high-def TV! And the wife says OK!

I have 2 issues with DLP. One is that some people see rainbows due to the spinning color wheel. The other issue is it is the only technology with moving mechanical parts. The light will need replacement at some point and I understand they are not cheap.

I know plasma is more expensive, but I'm worth it! :D (Isn't that a commerical?)

Good luck on your purchase. I'm sure you will be happy with whatever you get.

The "whoosh" is usually the sound of the HV capacitors getting charged.

The clicks are probably the sounds of the power supply attempting to send current to the electron gun and failing.

Without more details the failure is hard to diagnose. It could be anything in the chain.

Try posting more details (like model, brand & age/used hours) on the set to this forum:

www.avsforum.com is a good place to poke around to learn about different manufacturers, sets and technologies.

Both DLP and LCD RP displays require bulb replacement; $200 or so and a DIY in 2 minutes.

DLP is the only one with moving parts as it utilizes a spinning wheel; I haven't read about any pervasive failures with that component. The HD2+ chip seems better liked than either the HD2 or HD3. You do need to "test drive" in the store to make sure you don't suffer from the "rainbow effect" as they call it.

LG actually makes good stuff now. I'm with you on the past "Goldstar" junk.

DaleB just picked up a Sony LCD RPTV and I have a Sammy DLP RPTV and we're both in love w/the sets. I know Amazent has a Sharp Aquos LCD which, if it were in my pricerange, I'd buy in a heartbeat. I personally prefer the LCD flatscreens to Plasma.

I got this Sony LCD RP a couple months ago and together with VOOM I'm enjoying HDTV every night. Of course if I had the $ I would get an LCD flat panel too.

I have a 44" Wide by 32" tall space so anything I get must fit that space. 44" LG DLP for under $2100 or Plasma for $5500+ or Flat screen LCD for $7000+. From what I have seen rear projection (either DLP or LCD) offers better value than either flat LCD or Plasma.

By the way I saw (been shopping tonight) a Samsung 46" HD2+ for $2900 - very impressive. ; and it fits my space.

I suppose money no object the 45" Sharp Aquos LCD is phenominal - but $8000  However since money is an object, which Samsung do you have? I saw a 46" tonight that was very impressive - it was the HLP4674W which is being replaced by the HLR4677W. Tweeters will have the replacement in next week for $2900.

I have the 4674 and LOVE it. It'll fit in a space that's a hair over 40". Since you have a bit more space than I did (which was right at that hair over 40" after some minor shelf modifications), you may have some other options, but in my research (recent - got it in January) the thin-bezel Sammy gives you the most screen real estate for the space the box needs. My guess would be that you'd be hard-pressed to find anything bigger than 44" that would fit given the case designs (unless you go to a plasma or lcd with removal side speakers). 3 grand for the set has been about the best going rate for the past several months.

Wonder what the diff between the 74 and 77 is. If they knock off a few hundred to clear it for the new one (and depending on the differences betw the two) it could be a great deal. There are really no glaring flaws in design or known issues with them.

avsforum has a very active 4674/5674 thread, which is where I got most of my info.

The Sharp does have an excellent picture, if you are right in front of it. One of LCD's biggest drawbacks is the viewing angle. They can't come close to plasma. My kids can't lie on the floor and watch cartoons on an LCD. The viewing angle prohibits that. They can do it with a plasma.

I would like to have a little more space in my living room so I lean to the space saving technologies that offer a great PQ. Almost all of the newer technologies offer impressive pictures. The entire display market will be changing dramatically over the next several years.

One big advantage of the flat panels for me is I can put it in the living room and when a better newer technology comes out that I want, I can buy it and move flat panel to another room. Most people wouldn't move a big RP unit to a bedroom whereas they would move a flat panel to another room.

Just my 2 cents worth. (And yes plasma and LCD are more expensive but the MDX is more expensive than other SUVs too. :D )

Very valid points about viewing angles; plasma wins that one.

Regarding size most DLP and LCD RPs are only 15-18" deep. The Samsung TheWorm has and I'm now looking at measures 40" X 30 X 16" and weighs 74#. Granted you can't wall mount it but otherwise I don't consider its size a disadvantage.

Regarding cost its a TV not a car - the cheapest HD Plasma I found costs $5500 for a 42" screen. Thats too big a cost increase fo me - 46" DLP for $2800ish vs. 42" Plasma for $5500ish.

They only have a floor model left and I'm not sure how many hours is on the lamp. I'd have to be a big markdown, but I'll look into it. I think the 74 had a 1280 x 1080i format and the newer 77 has 1280 x 720p.

Just correcting myself; should've said 46" or so for this. It seemed you could get something 2-3" bigger than the space you've got.

Thanks I did that; we'll see if any ideas come from it.

Not really; 50" will not fit and I haven't seen anything offererd between 46" and 50". Even 42" with side speakers will not fit. I've seen several 44", a few 45" (LCD), and this 46". I am a little concerned about Samsung reliability. The recent Consumer Reports has the Samsung brand as second worst behind RCA. Of course that is only rating older models - they admit they have no stats on the newer DLP, LCoS, LCD, etc.

Have you checked out the Costco website? They have a few nice DLP sets, here is one of them:

I bought this Pioneer Plasma llast month from Costco and I absolutely love the picture:

I'm in the market for my in-laws. They are looking for something in the 42" to 50" range. I am stearing them towards the Sony LCD or the Toshiba DLP for the cost savings over plasma...and they have the depth on the bookcase to handle it.

Anyone have strong opinions between Sony's KDF50WE655 versus Toshibas similar 52" model....spec wise they seem very similar other than the LCD versus DLP. Also the Toshiba is a little cheaper ($2200 versus $2400).

I have a Sony KDF-55XS955 and I'm not familiar with Toshiba DLPs. One thing to consider is the cost of the replacement lamp. Sony charges $200 for theirs, which is not bad. Used to have a Hitachi LCD RPTV and the lamp had to be replaced after 1 year! Hitachi lamps are $500 a pop and were out of stock then.

BTW, I'm very happy with my Sony so far.

Me too. I got a great deal on the 55WF655. Did a fair amount of tweaking on it via avsforum.com and am very pleased. Been looking at all these sets for a good 3 months. It's not an easy choice, lots of great stuff out there. There is something for everyone.

... decided to get the new Samsung 46" DLP; the HL-R4677W

Watched UNC defeat Illinois last night in Hi-Def :1:

I must say the picture was a little better than my 7+ year old 4:3 tube TV. That by the way, was an example of the literary device known as "understatement" :D

Try this 42" Sony plasma, bought 7 months ago, the best TV I ever had:)

BTW, price had dropped, it used to be $5300.
